I want to see these windmill farms erected on both the Mar & Lago sides of Trump's estate so he sees them turning no matter which way he looks! And, I want them to be the power sources for his property so he has to pay rates for them!

Good.

I saw something "strange" in the news. A power company for the UK is planning on building a solar farm in Moroco. Then 2 big underground cables to the UK. And ship it as DC. That is 2000 miles straight. The cable will need to be like 4000 miles to follow the coasts. I never had any idea that was possible.
If that really works then this means we could cover the high desert areas of the USA with solar. Lots of it. And power most everything. Add the turbines for nighttime. All around the coasts and throughout the country. We can do renewable right now.

We've been able to follow actual developed countries in a lot of ways for a long time. But we don't.

Irradiate dead birds. Live birds, being freaks, bang the radioactive dead birds. Birds are dinosaurs, so radioactive birds are radioactive dinosaurs. So if you want Godzilla, by all means; this seems a great way to get Godzilla.

So, let's kill those birds!

Maybe put giant fake snakes/sea serpents around them to scare off the birds?

Silly comment. Power transmission IS completely different from data transmission. Data can be transmitted long distance via microwaves. Or to satellites and back. That does not work for power.

Data can be as simple as a simple pulse of light.  .5W for yes or 1, .25W for no or 0, or something like that.  Even transmitting lots of information doesn't necessarily transfer much energy, because the data is in the form of light rather than electricity - trying to convert to electricity would be futile, gaining a fraction of the energy used and utterly destroying the information transferred.

I've driven around mountains with farms of these along the peaks. It doesn't destroy the view, it's reassuring to know the local energy I use is fairly clean. It was in West Virginia.

It should be a badge of honor.

And unless you have endangered species, every bird killed will be replaced if there is enough food. Might as well talk about eliminating cats.

Just for comparison, TFA talks about one of the leased areas between New York and New Jersey being capable of generating 8 GW or something like that. The other areas are much smaller. The Nantucket one I think is listed at 1 GW.

Three Mile Island was 800 MW and something. San Onofre was two units, each of about 1. 1 GW.

These are areas that the Biden administration is opening up to development. Developers will bid on them. The construction will be managed by somebody. The materials will be made by somebody. They will be built by somebody. Then they will  be operated by somebody. All of that will be done with capital provided by somebody.

That is a lot of hoops to jump through to complete these, a lot of time, and a lot of foreigners. Probably almost all foreigners.

I am sure that the hope is that somewhere along the line, the US will get expertise and some companies trying to do similar projects someplace else in the US. Once the US develops a good offshore wind industry, it can keep doing these projects.

From where I sit, this is a lot of "Ima gonna" that will get a big announcement, and maybe not much to come of it. It happens quite a bit. Everyone feels good and cheers, but the capital will be allocated to bitcoin or Gamestop stock instead, and America will settle into natural gas because it is easier, domestically financed and operated, and nobody complains too much.

Ah.... I should be more optimistic.

Let me just say that completing these projects will be as easy as getting unhealthy people to wear masks during a pandemic.

It is a no brainer! Right?

Solar batteries with molten salt are a thing. Along with wind, hydro, and geothermal, we could be 100% green in 10 years if we wanted.

Holy fark that's impressive.

They've been laying them since the late 19th century.

One task of the Royal Navy in the World Wars was to keep German from dredging up British cables and either cutting them or tapping into them.

Those cables gave Britain secure and instant communications around the globe, more secure than even encrypted radio messages.

If we upgrade the grid, we can do this.  My environmentalist lawyer sister in law will hate me for this but that grid has got to go where it's got to go, but it beats a pipeline, or mining uranium in the Grand Canyon.

Sun and wind potential, which is driven by the sun, moves like a wave across the US from east to west every day, preceded by energy demand.  That leaves the East Coast without solar or wind power first thing in the morning, which would have to be addressed by hydro, thermal, or battery storage.  The rest of the country would benefit from power being generated to the east, as they wake up.

There are two sides to the energy ledger and on the demand side, we have to find ways to conserve more.  LED lighting has put an incredible dent in demand.  Ground source HVAC is another huge avenue for energy savings.

Ground source HVAC, not to be confused with geothermal heating, is very similar to a conventional air conditioning/heat pumps, but instead of using ambient air to heat and cool, it uses groundwater.  The benefit of doing so is that groundwater below the frost line is always 55 degrees year-round.  When a conventional heat pump is trying to cool the house when it's 96 degrees and humid, it is trying to dissipate heat into that heat saturated environment and becomes highly inefficient.  The ground source heat pump is dissipating heat into a denser medium that is 41 degrees cooler than the ambient air and that differential makes the system more efficient. In winter, the poor conventional heat pump is trying to squeeze heat out of freezing ambient air.  Where older systems would start to fail below 40 degrees, requiring highly inefficient resistance heating strips to kick in, newer systems can continue to function down to freezing, albeit inefficiently.  The ground source heat pump again draws on 55 degree water that is 22 degrees above freezing to extract heat to heat the house, though it may still need supplemental heat on rare occasions.

Another benefit of ground source heat pumps is that they can be fitted with a device called a de-superheater, which is a fancy name for a heat-exchanger for water heaters.  When the heat pump is operating in cooling mode, it is superheating the coolant in the system and sending it out into the groundwater table to dissipate.  A de-superheater takes that heat and boils water in your hot water heater, giving you free hot water all summer long AND making the whole system function more efficiently.

Speaking of water heaters, even a conventional water heater can act as an energy storage device.  A well insulated water heater, timed to operate when renewable energy is available, can store energy overnight for early morning use when demand is high and renewable energy supply is low.

Passive solar is a great energy free solution to reducing heating and cooling energy.  Put simply, you use lots of glass on your southern exposure, which heats a monolithic slab floor inside the building that radiates stored heat after the sun goes down.  The foundation is literally acting like a heat battery.  You put long eaves on the building to cut high-angle summer sun and plant deciduous trees along the southern exposure that will shade summer sun and lose their leaves to allow low-angle winter sun to enter the building.  Supplemental HVAC is only used as needed on extremely hot or cold days.

There is no silver bullet, but there are a thousand small solutions to get us out of this mess.
