If it should invite you to give it belly rubs. DON'T DO IT! It's a trap.

My cousin lives in Royal Oak, and his house exploded today.
Probably unrelated.

Seriously though, no one was hurt, he was at work, and his totally normal domestic shorthair is fine. Shell shocked and smoke covered, but fine.

Since when are caracals domesticated??!  They're fairly large cats (20+ lbs) in comparison to a normal domestic cat.

My bad I read the article.

They say it's 50 lbs. 50 lbs is a pretty decent sized cat. My dog's about twice that big and I'd be keeping a close eye on him if I lived around there. Pound for pound a cat's a hell of a predator.

Although it just occurred to me that as an American pet that cat might just be fat as hell.

As opposed to those vegan cats?

I get an African cat is probably more dangerous than a scottish fold,  but they're all obligate carnivores.

I have scars on my hand from a stranger cat that invited a belly rub.

You know how you need to roll your tongue for certain languages, on certain consonants? Do that, but yell it long and loud. That's how you call a caracal. How you deal with the little shiat is up to you and how many digits you want to keep.

Slightly nocturnal. Not very dangerous. Can barely catch a wild kibble.

Slightly as in she sleeps most of the time. At seventeen I don't blame the old woman.

pearls before swine: A carnivorous cat, you say?

Yeah, so carnivorous they have a term for it: obligate carnivore.

There aren't many species that are obligate carnivores, but I was surprised to find out dolphins are on the list. Rounding out the rest are eagles, walruses, and seals.

Fark that BS.  If the cat is spotted it's not a Caracal.

SpaceyCat: Since when are caracals domesticated??!  They're fairly large cats (20+ lbs) in comparison to a normal domestic cat.

I was wondering the same. Apparently they were "tamed" as far back as ancient Egypt, as well as other places, and typically used for hunting-related activities, but it doesn't sound like there's a line of evolutionarily distinct domesticated caracals bred to be pets. Any animal can be a pet if you're brave enough!

At approximately 6:30 a.m., police responded to the 700 block of East LaSalle Avenue concerning several African caracal cats escaping their enclosure, according to Royal Oak officials. The cat's owner owns other caracals, according to police.

Two of the cats escaped Wednesday morning, but the owner was able to lure one back inside using raw meat. Wednesday is at least the third time the cats have escaped the owner's home.

"I've done my research, I'm aware of the risks, f*ck public safety n' shiat I'mma exercise my rights, oops not sorry"

This sounds vaguely familar

I genuinely don't consider *any* cat domesticated/tamed.  There is even an argument to be made of them domesticating humans to a degree, especially in light of Toxoplasmosis...

That aside, the little obligate carnivores with their murder mittens are solid hunters and cause of many extinctions across the world.

My brother and SIL live around the block from where the caracals live, so when the story broke yesterday, I immediately texted them.

Turns out their neighbor saw the cat in my brother's backyard. The news van was parked in front of his house and my SIL was actually interviewed on the local news last night.
