Garfield is a comic designed to sell Garfield merch. The committee called Jim Davis has admitted it.

My mom has a Garfield at her house that I won in a raffle at an Embassy Suites in the 80s.  Garfield was involved in their commercials at the time.

My 4 year-old instantly fell in love with Garfield, and since they're free on Amazon Prime, he watched all the cartoons.  He went to the doctor and told the 30 year-old PA that his favorite cartoon is Garfield.  She had no idea what that was.

It was a smart FINANCIAL move. As for personal integrity, not so much.

Also, I'm amazed the empire hasn't fallen apart, considering how little innovation it's been fed. Ever since the art style was finalized, they could run the same month of strips over and over and most fans wouldn't notice. It's not like Jim Davis™ comes up with new material... EVER...

He's pretty laid-back about the parodies and mockery, though. Instead of cease-and-desisting or threatening to sue the people who did Garfield Minus Garfield he wrote the foreword to their print edition.

It's a cartoon strip about cat that doesn't like Mondays.  I'm not seeing where I should be outraged by the lack of artistic integrity and merit.  What piece of mass produced media doesn't exist to try and make a buck?  That's the purpose of every superhero movie pumped out by Disney.

There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part! You can't even passively take part! And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels ... upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop! And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!

I kind of respect how shamelessly Jim Davis owns doing it purely for the money. He doesn't sugarcoat it, nor pretend he has any artistic integrity (hell, most Garfield strips are now drawn by his staff).

He's even willing to share the wealth. For instance, he's amused by Garfield Minus Garfield and let them publish a collection rather than send a Cease and Desist.

'Odious wasp' was the name of my '80's '1910 Fruitgum Company' cover band!
