This DA is on the take. F*ck me what a wrong word to use. That's how you know the kid is white. If he weren't, he would have just been lynched.

I don't think he's on the take, from the news articles.  Seems that that the douchebag kid has family connections in the police department

On the other side of Houston from me, that area is shall we say, rural.

The kid is in a law enforcement family.  He could shoot someone in broad daylight and walk away.

At this point, we can confirm there are some connections but have yet to see evidence of a city official directing the officer on the scene as to how to handle this particular situation," said Mathis.

The cop knew who the kid was and didn't 'need' directions. He knew what to do from the off.

Mathis also has connections with the teen's family, according to pictures on Facebook.

So the DA threw the case and is now trying to blame the cops, gotcha

I'm guessing not only is the 16yo's family connected to law enforcement, but they're rich. That wasn't an old beater truck, it was a new Ford Super Duty - a $70,000 truck Before it was modded to roll coal.

He pointed a deadly weapon at those people and 'tried to scare them', had an 'oopsie' and crippled 6 of them. Then walked away without so much as a ticket. That's not just "connections" - that's freaking Texas money.

The DA assigned a special prosecutor to this case, Walter Diepraam. They have a background in prosecuting vehicular homicide cases. That's about as good as you can get in this part of Texas.

Sure, his dad is in tight with us. But we really looked at this close and can't seem to see any other connection. But you can rest assured, going forward will keep our eyes peeled for anything that might look suspicious. When we're finished investigating ourselves and don't find anything wrong, we will let you know.

And rest assured if this case does go to trial, the alleged felon's attorney will use the affluenza and child of a police officer arguments to claim the defendant couldn't connect actions to consequences because his parents' wealth and status as an authority figure bought them privilege. The judge will probably buy that argument and, if the court issues a guilty verdict, hand down a sentence that makes what Ethan Couch got look like a tyrannical punishment.

Hate crime. Rolling coal on cyclists is a political threat to tell them that their healthy transportation is not welcome on the highway. Sure he didn't "plan" on hitting anybody, just like the Klan didn't know anybody would be sleeping in that church they burned down.

I'm certainly not encouraging it, but push people too far with official corruption/letting guilty people walk without even a slap on the wrist ... justice may find a way.  There's that recent story of the lawyer in SC (NC?) who's kid got murdered after getting a girl killed.  Or the classic "Didn't see nuthin" case of Ken McElroy.

Where a teen drunk driver kills four people and the judge gives him a slap on the rest on the grounds that the kid was too rich to know any better.

Anyone interested in this story should read the current statement by the biker's lawyers

The driver of the black F-250 that crushed our clients' bodies and left them and their bikes splashed and scattered across the roadway is a 16 year old Waller, Texas male. Through our own investigation, we've learned his name, his address, the names of his parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, neighbors and family friends. We know the names of the businesses owned and operated by the driver's family. We know where he was earlier in the day, prior to crashing into our clients while they were more than 70 miles into their USAT tri-club training ride. We know the identity of his passenger (a local 17 year old male from a neighboring town) and a pretty good idea about the role he may have played in causing the crash that sent ALL of our clients to the hospital

That's a great "Yes, we know who your Daddy is, do you know who *we* are?" statement.  These weren't some random schlubs out for a day, these were folks with serious money and the ability to hire really, really good lawyers.  My guess is that the local PD might be able to get the kid minimal time based on connections, but the bikers are gearing up for a civil suit that will break the family.

2021-10-13 9:20:04 AM
Do we know it was modded to roll coal, or was he just making vroomy sounds trying to intimidate the libby lib bike riders?

I'm not a lawyer, but it seems that modding your vehicle shows pre-meditation to break the law.  Which means daddy should be facing charges as well for providing his kid with, not a vehicle, but a weapon.

Everyone involved with this should be in jail.  Parents, family, friends, cops and DA.  The kid should spend time in juvie, then be put into foster care, for adoption.

It's not horribly surprising that 16 year old lacks a great deal of empathy, and thinks the world revolves around themselves, and might be a bit unintentionally selfish at times.  But, not to the level where they decide to plow through a group of other humans as if they were vermin to be exterminated.

Texas has a cult problem, and this is the inevitable result of raising teenagers in a cult.

Whatever you do, don't say the police need top down reform before they become an unaccountable de facto occupying military force. It makes moderates very uncomfortable, and they may have no choice but to go out and vote for hard right whackos who will ensure that result.

It doesn't work that way. You can just say "oh we're broke.' That's why they focus on the red herring of "we didn't direct them to throw the case" type statements. Same thing with that Eastman guy with TFG yesterday. Notice how they all focus on denying they said that exact statement? Online trolls use the same tactics.

I'm guessing daddy owns a few car dealerships if not all the local car dealerships.  Might own a few fast food franchises as well since in the early days in small towns only the car dealer and bankers could afford them and the bankers had no appetite for food franchises.

I'm a bit more cynical about this.  Are they well connected?  Sure.  But when it comes to violent crime committed with cars, whether it results in assault with a deadly weapon or negligent homicide, routinely gets swept under the rug as "just an accident".  When you cause a crash with a motor vehicle, your license should be suspended pending investigation.  If it causes injury or death, maybe we should be keeping you in custody as if you did it with a baseball bat or a gun.  These people aren't less hurt or dead because you did it with a car...

You think that'll matter to a Jury full of people from the same county or town? Juries were always stocked with "friendly faces" back when the KKK was lynching 100 people a year in Tennessee and Alabama before the 1960's. Nowadays, when they find some black kid dangling from a tree, they make damn sure that it's labeled a suicide no matter what the circumstances.
