Reminds me of the time I saw someone fall for the "does this ice cream smell weird" trick. Wholesome yet cruel (the best kind of wholesome).

I used to be a fish tank guy and friends with lots of other fish tank guys and gals. Started freshwater and moved over to salt water and had a reef tank. For about ten years I lived and breathed fish tanks.

Arowana owners always came across a bit strange to me.  One was absolutely gleeful whenever he talked about feeding his pinkies (baby rats or mice).  I always made sure I told a friend I was heading over to his place.

I mostly fragged and traded soft and hard corals.

I've yet to see an arowana tank in a properly lit room that did not have Scandinavian death metal playing in the background.  Not BAD people, just a bit different.  Lots of hand-made leather jewelry and pentagram necklaces.

"Some" pets need things like pinkies to eat. Arowanas are just badass and cool and can eat whatever they want kind of like oscars. You don't need to feed them baby rodents but it's "cool" (I don't think it's cool, I get sick at pointless death).

Yeah that's why I could never get a snake or lizard. I just can't feed a living animal to another, even if it's a part of their diet.

Yes I know the hypocrisy in eating meat while saying that, but it just feels so much worse when it's a baby like that.

Actually on that topic, the husband needs to run because his wife literally told the world she's maliciously hurt and kill living animals when upset.

Saw one in a big tank at an aquarium shop in Chicago once, in the 1970s. It was the owner's personal pet and not for sale. The metallic steel-colored scales, the snake-like sinuous way it moved in the tank -- it was hypnotic to watch.

They are truly striking fish.

So the fish had to live in a dirty tank until it was killed for spite?

It's like on Game of Thrones

SPOILER

when at the red wedding Catelyn takes Walder Frey's teenage wife hostage and then kills her when Frey won't back down.  I mean, her life was already terrible and her death served no purpose but a "fark you" in a situation she had nothing to do with.

Some are born to sing the blues...

Thing is, some carnivorous pets NEED to hunt occasionally for their mental health. I've had puffers and blue crays and African Clawed frogs that were okay being fed mealworms or shrimp pellets, but after chasing down a minnow or two were happy as a pig in shiat for weeks afterwards because they hunted vs being fed. My blue crays would sit on top their caves in daylight with a "COME AT ME BRO! COCK-A-FARKING-DOODLE-DOO!" attitude instead of hiding til their after-dark feeding.

I don't condone that course of action.

Lol they used to make "hotdogs" for snakes to eat. Basically some kind of rodent slurry in tube-steak form.  I remember laughing about it back in the day.

My old roommate had a bearded dragon. Mostly ate crickets, but for a special 'treat' it got pinkies. Thing absolutely loved them.

I used to know a guy who started his own acrylic fish tank business. Stupidly successful right out of the gate.

Four years into it, things were off the charts and only getting better.

Until he met that 14 years old cop on the internet who put his ass away for 20 years. His wife was a lawyer who had just given birth to their first and only daughter.

I'm highly suspicious of fish tank people now.

One of the most fascinating animal I ever saw in a tank was a bunch of iridescent jellyfish in a tank that made up the entire back wall of a bar in Vegas. I was completely mesmerized by their slow pulsating movement. They are absolutely beautiful in a weird alien way.

The Denver Zoo has one that's around 4' long. It lives in a tank with piranha.

Quite intimidating eye to eye, like getting close to a great ape or big cat. Something more predatory than an elephant or rhino in its eyes.

I loved that Cameron used them as the inspiration for the entities in The Abyss. Glaringly obvious, but it gave them an air of the otherworldly while also being perfectly apt to their environment.

Knew someone whose roommate had a snapping turtle and a couple of constrictors.  He bred mice in a separate terrarium so they'd have pinkies to eat regularly.  Seemed like a very good way to get evicted if you ask me.  Ain't no landlord on Earth gonna put up with breeding mice no matter how careful you are.
