For all those mock him, your opinion would change if you sat down and had a beer with him. He's actually pretty funny. The grump-schtik is just that.

He's still a below average coach who rode the coattails of the best player in NFL history to the Hall of Fame.

Well, that doesn't make him a great coach.  I'm pretty sure that if I sat down and had a beer with bigot Jon Gruden, or loser Urban Meyer, or either Dem Bill Clinton or (when he was alive) Repub Ronald Reagan, I'd probably have a good opinion of such person.

I mean, charisma is charisma, and I'm not going to Godwin, but lots of folks fit that category.

By all accounts, Jim Tomsula would be a great guy with whom to share a beer.

/If sharing a beer, I'd be more interested in Belichick's knowledge of the game's history than his sense of humor
//But it'd be nowhere near as fun as sharing a beer with John Madden

I really had a reversal of opinion after last season.  Just as folks detracted from Montana because of Walsh, or Walsh because of Montana, I had this question answered.  I gave Belichick too much credit and TB not enough.

/I don't believe TB is the best player in NFL history, but he's a top 5 QB
//Best player is a highly questionable ranking to make, especially because it's so time period relevant

Laughs in Matt Cassel, cries in Aaron Rodgers.

Just a tidbit for everyone who loves offense players and their key to the team being successful...

"
But there is one statistic common to every champion since 2013 - a stinginess on defense. All ranked in the Top 10 in scoring defense. They did not allow points. That's been the one statistic universal to the success of all Super Bowl champions - 47 of the 54 winners ranked in the Top 10 in scoring defense. Of the 108 teams that have reached the Super Bowl, 89 of them ranked in the Top 10 in scoring defense.
Sixteen of the Super Bowl champions led the NFL in scoring defense, another 18 finished in the Top 5 and 13 more finished in the Top 10. So the secret to NFL success isn't how often an offense puts the ball in the end zone - it's how well a defense keeps the ball out of its own end zone."

Wait, are we being ironic calling Belichick overrated?

As opposed to what I'm sure you and everyone else on Fark said during the Brady/Manning debate years, when Tom was a "system QB" and it was all Belichick.

I love when people are consistent...
