It would have been interesting to see these without the titles, so I could judge how iconic they were.

"It also feels a little premature to count anything published in the last 30 years as "iconic,""

WTF is Methuselah doing ranking book covers?

/jfc maybe a dozen years is premature... thirty? i can't remember a goddamned thing from thirty years ago
//ok i was drunk, fine.

What is so special about this one, that it is supposed to be iconic?

Thought the same thing.

And I have almost all the books on my shelf (including 73 copies of Catcher in the Rye) but none of these covers. I feel cheated.

Regardless of one's opinion of this book, I would think the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy would easily make that list....

King had a good run of covers in the 80's.

And Frank Herbert classic:

I've got 20 of those books and 14 have the covers shown.  I think I've re-read about 1/2 during this time of the pandemic.   I read just about all of them in high school in the before time.

List lacks Chuck Tingle classics.

Any cover that is "iconic" due to the font being used isn't iconic.

Type design still creates images as a whole. These images can indeed be iconic.

About the same for me. I think the list is just the best-selling paperbacks. It would explain the Anne Rice selection with the boring cover.

I have one I think is iconic, but I want to test it out.  Who all can identify the book by this image?

Lastly (for now), am I wrong in thinking this one might merit an honorable mention?

The Joy of Cooking is likely more iconic than most of those.

Oh, and that's not the first edition cover. It was just plain big text, black on white like. Boring.

This seems just like a series of books you are given to read in school.

To be fair, there may be a correlation between publishing iconic books with iconic covers. More entertaining might be "Books that absolutely suck, but have epic covers."

Iconic to bibliophiles and book collectors, maybe.

Y'know, I'm starting to think the word "iconic" is grossly overused these days.

Put it this way: If you replaced the words with random letters, could you still identify the book?

Ah, Spy vs Spy, a literary classic.

Portnoy's Complaint

is just the title. I guess the 60's was when fonts were discovered and thought of as edgy.

Judges have obviously never bought an 80's Piers Anthony novel.

The letters are raised on my paperback edition.  Sorta a minimalist 3D.

That's all I got.

Agreed, particularly Lady Chablis' role, which I think was on a leading edge of open LGBTQ actors (I'm showing my age, I'm sure).
... But like everything else with Spacey, it's permanently poisoned.

One more and I'll go. These were joyfully violent and guilty pleasures, and the covers reflected that well.
