Yeah - blows my mind that with a lot of construction trucks and log trucks in particular, they materials really aren't very secured. Mostly, they stay where they are due to weight/gravity and friction.

My anxiety-riddled and highly visual brain always pictured something like this happening from the first time getting behind the wheel. And that opening scene in Final Destination 2 still gets me.

In the early 70s, my father and I were driving in the family 1968 van in New Jersey on some road in the country. It was night time, raining and moderate traffic. An oncoming 18-wheeler flatbed had a load of plywood and one sheet had gotten loose. It sailed out, just barely floated above the car ahead of us then up-righted flat and hit us straight in the windshield.

Of course the glass shattered but only the driver's side as the Dodge vans at that time had a 2 part windshield - separate panes for each side. We were shaken but not hurt and the truck never stopped (probably did not even know it happened). We found a garage open late night and they had a piece of plexiglass they cut down to size that we basically taped and screwed into place until we got a proper replacement.

To this day I get a little spooked going past open trailer trucks, but at take comfort that safety laws have lessened to a large degree, these types of situations.

We discarded the plywood sheet.

Here in MA, he's responsible for properly securing his load and would be cited as at-fault for the accident.

Apparently, Indiana is a more "industry-friendly" state.

I avoid contractors with ladders on the roof or anything resembling an unsafe load.
I have seen three ladders fly off trucks, lumber, construction waste, and once a heavy bulldozer that ended up killing four after I passed the idiot driving it on a flatbed.
Logging trucks also scare the shiat out of me especially when they load logs right up to the top.

Actual article headline is a good bit off from reality i find.
Here is concretion for greater truth.

A miracle': Woman alive after unsafely driving too close to the vehicle in front of her, when a 2×4 flies off semi, and smashes through windshield.
Had she been maintaining a safe distance for the speed from the truck in front of her, this 2x4 could not have gone into her windshield the way it did.

Also, got shown the picture of when it was a steel pipe instead of s 2x4 and when it did go through the driver's neck, killing them. in high school drivers ed class.
the fook i do not follow that close behind any loaded vehicle.

About four years ago, I was a quarter mile behind a truck on a freeway when its load of plywood started peeling off, "making it rain".
No one got hit that I saw. Freaky sight.

Log trucks, work trucks, any truck.

I hate driving behind a truck with anything in it or on it. Is your junk secured? Can I trust you?

Just the other day a truck merged in front of me with I think 40 ladders, no joke.

From TFA:
This wasn't a case of following too closely and something slid, it was - it was going two different ways. "

They were passing each other, going in different directions, when the wood came off the truck.

It's the same in Indiana. The driver wasn't cited because they weren't found.

Happened to me on an Interstate in North Carolina. A bozo in a pick up had an unsecured 2 x 4 fly out of the truckbed and hit our windshield. He was doing about 80 mph in the left lane.

The only thing that saved us was the flat side hit our windshield rather than the end.

We were in some rural part of the state and had to drive to Charlotte to find a place that was opened on a Saturday to get a repair.

A girl I went to school with was following a truck that lost a ladder. She was DECAPITATED. The driver of the truck got fined $50 for unsecured load.

I don't follow trucks with ladders.
