I had a moment of shame when I realized this was the first time I'd heard of this.

God we are a racist country. It's a national f*cking five-alarm fire if a young, attractive white woman is missing, but if they're any shade lighter than lily white, no coverage.

So, in this case, they know the guy who did it, and have already found him dead from suicide. But to subby this is somehow just the same as the other widely publicized murder where the suspect is missing and still at large. Both deaths are tragic, but the circumstances are very, very different.

Well, sure, but when there's even the slightest bit of room for manufactured outrage over racism that isn't actually there, why pass that up, am I right!?

I've been hearing quite a bit about this but it's possibly heavier coverage in Florida.

While the van lifer murder probably does have an element of whiteness to it, it's also getting a lot of attention because it's kind of strange (van lifers/social media types) and there was an obvious suspect who has now gone on the run. There were also a lot of witnesses, video and so forth. Very well positioned for some sensationalistic coverage.

Well the guy that killed her killed himself like a week ago, so there was very little hope of finding her alive.  Murderer boyfriend on the run gets a lot more clicks.

Unfortunately there are on a few channels available, news is only allowed to be broadcast for 30 minutes a day, the only written media is newspapers, and all the journalists are arch conservatives.

What do you expect?

I think you miss the point.

This case wouldn't merit national coverage on it own since it's a pretty unremarkable missing persons case: no manhunt, not really much chance she was still alive, no real need to publicize the case for help from the public, no really odd circumstances surrounding her disappearance.

But, after a monthlong media orgy over Gabby Petito (in fairness, a case that does check all the above boxes), and the resulting accusations that the media is racist and gives disproportionate coverage to white tragedies, they decide to pounce on the first missing person case involving a not-too-dark-skinned minority so they can say, "See?  We're not racist."  And now that they've given a hair of coverage their token missing black person, they are going back to the whites.

Your argument, that this case is unremarkable, actually strengthens submitter's point.

Don't feel bad.

Given the number of murders and disappearances in this country, this really shouldn't have been more than local or regional news anyway.  The situation with the couple traveling the country saw unduly disproportionate coverage, so judging only now seeing this against the media circus surrounding that other murder is not something that you should beat yourself up over.

I wish that murders were rare enough to justify national coverage, but they're just not, and many of the circumstances surrounding them are personal to the killer and the victim.  There's usually not much particularly novel or new about the circumstances of most murders.

My wife is the daughter of a sewer worker and a nurse.  When she was an adolesent they paid for regular horseback ridiing lessons at a local stables, and later managed to pay her way through MIT.  Just because someone has done well for themselves doesn't mean that no one was working for it or that they don't have humble roots that they remember.

I'm not going to waste a bunch of time explaining a joke that was obvious to a lot of folks, suffice it to say that someone who feels the need to put EQUESTRIAN and REALLY EXPENSIVE NICE SCHOOL and REALLY EXPENSIVE NICE SCHOOL OF LAW on the rear facing window of their car is probably going to about as insufferable as a Texan crossfitter.
