I am thoroughly confused.  I have three issues:

1) I do not care about Britney Spears

2) I don't know anything about Britney Spears' conservatorship, and how a brutal crime lord might be connected with it.

3) I do not care about Britney Spears.

Now, someone might say that points 1 and 3 are the same, but taking a cue from Kryten on "Red Dwarf", I would say it was such a big point that it deserved to be counted twice.

Well, it's so great you took time out of your day to join this thread to tell us that you don't care about the thread. That's certainly not ironic and a waste of everyone's time. Including yours.

It's not exclusively an American problem.  My ex wife's aunt in Europe was placed in their equivalent of a conservatory.  They robbed her blind.  The house she had lived in all her life wasn't hers any more, then they dumped her into a home and abandoned her.  My ex was not in any position to do anything and only really found out what was going on when it was too late.

It isn't really about Britney Spears. It is about how it shouldn't be as easy as it is to claim somebody can't look after their own affairs and then take control of their finances and independence.

I don't care about the tabloid Britney Spears, but I thought it was weird when it was reported that she was being forced to work the Vegas shows and not have any control over having to perform. That seemed pretty abusive to me.

I don't care for or about a lot of performers, but respect the hundreds of hours of hard work that go into staging the dancing, etc. That's no walk in the park. A lot of these child performers are not educated well or taught to survive in  the real world. This was a little girl who was working adult level jobs since she was three as a performing monkey for a bunch of studio vipers. I wonder if her parents panicked when she became of age and their cash cow ran out. I'd be a little nuts, too. I wish her the best.

Yeah, we generally call that slavery.

She had a mental breakdown after working much too hard for her age due to her parents pushing her into the business and making her their cash cow.

Then the people responsible for her breakdown are given absolute control of their victim.

Yeah.  I'd say this system is farked up.

Also conservatorships are scary and can happen to someone easily. Georgia O'Keefe was taken advantage of by a young couple who isolated her from her relatives and spent her money while they neglected her. That brought it to the attention of New Mexico authorities and I'm sure it has something to do with them cracking down on conservatorships.

Its funny how the three bill sponsors of a bill (or bills) to help people control their own affairs are Democrats. Where's the party of personal responsibility?

This is a scary problem that affects a lot of older folks. Scuzzy lawyers make a career of it. Declare them invalid, take control of their estate as "guardians", forbid contact with family and friends to isolate the elderly victim and ensure they're helpless, and drain their funds. Once their is nothing left, stick them in a government-funded nursing home and move on.

Thank you for trying to help me.  I don't recognize what movie that picture is from.  But at least now I know that the headline is make a reference to something other than Britney Spears, which helps.

I apologize for my ignorance, but that is exactly what I was trying to cure by asking a question.  I should have been more straightforward about it instead of trying to be clever, but I always liked Kryten.

Based on the pic and the mention of Rosamund Pike, it looks like it's from "I Care A Lot" (2020), which IMDB lists the plot as:

A crooked legal guardian who drains the savings of her elderly wards meets her match when a woman she tries to swindle turns out to be more than she first appears.

I did not get the joke/reference either.

Thank you.  I will go look up that movie.  I am afraid I am so out of touch with popular culture that I did not recognize Rosamund Pike.

It is some comfort to know I was not alone in having trouble figuring out what this thread was about, :)

F*cking seriously? F*ck your misogyny, creep.

Is it misogynistic to appreciate the attractiveness, assertiveness, and strong feminism of a woman who chooses to eschew the traditional standards of patriarchal beauty, and chose to go without hair?
She's saying "I won't bow to what a man thinks I need to be to be pretty. Having flowing hair isn't what makes me attractive, it's who I am inside that counts."

So I don't think it's wrong for a man to support her choice in hairstyle, because I believe with all my heart that for women, bald is beautiful.

Abe Vigoda's Ghost: [Fark user image image 620x413]

Wonderfully made movie with great actors, but I had to turn it off halfway through (and read a synopsis online) because it was just too depressing.
It's partially based on the story of April Parks who had guardianship over hundreds of people just to rob them blind.  This New Yorker article is terrifying.

And I don't think the cliche question is particularly misogynist.
