Please please please change the theme song. It's the worst theme song of all time!

The product placement is distracting as well. Not just the frequent close-ups of iPhones and iPhone screens, but also when they shoehorn iOS features into the conversations. Cringe!

Great show though. I learned that not all football pitches are the same size, which is super weird.  And I suddenly want a Brompton.

Sudeikis is from Shawnee, a KC suburb. The accent doesn't sound close to his actual voice, but there are parts of super-rural Southeast Kansas where you have a drawl that he's exaggerated for the show.

Ok, on to the episode itself...

Some of it really worked, some of it really didn't.

The good:

I loved how Ted's arc played with Sharon this year and correctly guessed what Trent Crimm was up to weeks ago. Ted's and Nate's storylines have been the best this year because they've organically built off what we knew about each in season one and done a wonderful job of dropping hints of what was to come in that text along the way. It's unethical for Crimm to reveal his source, yes, but it's also payback for Ted being a genuinely good guy to him for two years and knowing that making a guy prone to panic attacks paranoid about the leak would be another nail in the coffin. He knew that he could trust Ted not to tell, too (although in real life he probably would've called him rather than attaching his name to it in print).

Nate's heel turn and frustration were bound to boil over- betraying Ted when he thinks the former is stealing his thunder was the perfect impetus.

The ok to pretty good:

I have a different view on the Roy/Keeley thing than most people, apparently. I don't think the writers are trying to break them up; I think they're trying to show that even good relationships have moments of weakness. Loved that Roy responded to Nate trying to kiss Keeley by realistically laughing and going "man, that must've been awkward" (it REALLY was) rather than the sitcom-y blowup at either one of them. Keeley couldn't control Nate misreading the intentions of a beautiful woman being nice to him as much as she can control her ex still being in love with her. Roy, on the other hand... probably enjoyed flirting with the hot teacher for a few hours and was more in the wrong for not mentioning his live-in girlfriend. Still, I think the two of them will be fine and this show's Turk/Carla.

Rebecca... has been fine if you look at the season as the woman finding herself post-divorce, but the Sam thing never should've happened at all and she should've taken the billionaire's money for the Sam transfer to cover up the lost revenue from the sponsorship. Trying to have her cake and eat it too with the last exchange at Sam's was pretty stupid and selfish, too.

The not good:

I like that Sam got a lot more screentime this year. The actor and character are great. They've misused him big time, though. Zero consequences for the protest makes it far less meaningful, and he's felt more like an arbitrary plot device than a real person.

Dani, Issac, Colin, and Jan need more screentime. Weird week for Jamie to disappear outside of the N*SYNC dance, too.

I don't think the theme song is great, but it's only about 20 seconds long so I now stick it out because the "skip" button seemed to jump a few seconds into the episode previously.  I don't think it cut off anything important but a couple of times it was in the middle of the first line of dialogue.

Mumford has done a good bit of the music on the show as a whole, and while the theme is underwhelming, I thought his song in last year's finale was good (during the loss to Man City).  And I believe there was a slower cover of the theme song played in the background of the Ted/Rebecca scene in last week's episode that I thought actually worked well.

Sort of agree, but the real consequences from the protest may not have completely played out yet.  For one, one result of the protest is Sam now being recruited to the Ghana team.  Not to mention we still have to see what Rupert's up to and whether or not DubaiAir factors into that scheme.

Good observations on both. You and I have talked about it quite a bit this year and I'm definitely anxious to see how Rupert plays into it, plus the "billionaire" that frivolously spends money all over the place doesn't seem trustworthy...

Nate is going to end up killing Ted.

2021-10-01 2:12:24 PM
What in the world is motivating this behavior in Nate?

He's exhibiting a ton of self hatred.  Did getting a little assertiveness training cause him to turn his self hatred outwards onto those around him?

2021-10-01 2:39:29 PM
Nate was really good in this episode.  Mis-reading the room, and the palatable self-hatred.  He brought more to the role than I thought he would.  Keely's reaction was spot on.

So many characters difficult to give them all screen time.  I do like that Ted & Dr. Ended on a positive note, but she will be back for season 3.  Sam is leaving and coming back in season 3. Hannah has made the character her own.

Probably a combo of his relationship with his father as well as his lifelong timidity, which led to him being shiat on most of his life.  His recent breakthroughs in confidence, spurned on by the noble motivations of Ted, Keely, and the like unfortunately unleashed his dark side along with it.

 Serious question:

I just got AppleTV so I am in the first season...just watchedthe episode where they beat the team in Liverpool and then go to Karaoke. It's been enjoyable, but not hilarious. Does it get better? Frankly, all I see is a soccer version of Major League, and a pretty blatant ripoff to boot.

I realize some shows need a year to work out the kinks...find their space...and define who they want to be (2 of my favorite sitcoms, Seinfeld and Parks and Rec had similar arcs). I'll watch anyway, it's only a few more episodes of season 1 and then season 2, and like I said it's somewhat enjoyable, but what I am missing that it gets all the love, Emmy's, etc.?

2021-10-01 3:49:27 PM
Depends on your definition of get better.  Two episodes in season 2 were out of place, the rest was pretty decent.  The show does get darker, which I think is better.  There isn't an abundance of set-up and punch lines like traditional American sitcoms.

The reason for all the awards is that their wasn't an abundance of competition.  Covid delayed the filming of many shows.

If you've gotten that far into season one and are not enjoying it, it might not be for you. It had pretty much found it's voice by that point.

I'm a little surprised by it winning comedy awards, as I don't know that I'd consider it a comedy.  Is it a drama?  Ehh, it's hard to define.  I think it's mostly just a pleasant uplifting character piece.  It's, to me, a breath of fresh air however much I like other shows.  I think Sudeikis kills it.  Brett Goldstein kills it.   All of them are good honestly. Juno Temple has like this weird, ugly hot thing going on.

The first season has a lot of the same plot as Major League true, but it is nothing like it at all.  Major League is actually funny.  If you are looking for something like that, don't look at Ted Lasso.  If you want to be entertained by a most positive, sentimental, and charming character driven show, then you might want to stick with it.

It's not a situation comedy.
It's like the people who mad at the Orville for trying to be funny. It's not a sitcom.

And btw, FARK YOU, NATE!
I knew this was coming. He's going to head Rupert's new team.
It'll make a great season 3, as this is so Ted basically created, but yeah...
Fark you, Nate

2021-10-01 7:33:23 PM
Also, I've come to like the theme song.
I'm thinking too much into it, but I think the beginning, when Ted sits down, he's basically "infecting" all the things around him with being good.
All the chairs clean up, etc.

2021-10-01 8:44:51 PM
This feels like it should have been around episode 7 or 8. Something to follow up the sponsorship loss and with Jamie just recently returned to the team.

Also, farking Nate. What a little piece of shiat he's turned into (regarding Ted, not Keely). I used to be ambivalent about his little turn to evil, and now I hate him. So, well done writing staff on that one I guess.

It might just not be your thing. As other have pointed out the show kind of hit its stride by that episode. It's not a laugh out loud in your face kind of comedy. It's more of the dramedy style shows Bill Lawrence is known for. I'd at least finish out the season as you said you probably would. The from there you'll probably know better whether you think you want to continue to season 2 or not.

I think we all expected the Nate move. I'm really curious how they resolve his arc. It will probably take another season, but with how the show has been so positive about people in general, it will be interesting how they realistically redeem him. If they do.

I know you all predicted the turn to evil by Nate but I was hoping you were wrong.

I get the billionaire wants Sam to play football for a team that doesn't exist yet, but it seems crazy to take the star first before having any infrastructure at all.  You're going to get him and have him not play for a year or so while you build everything?

And the guy who buys and populates a museum and restaurant just to impress Sam seems really evil and pushy.

He'll probably have an arc like Jamie, but maybe stretched out a bit longer. Deep down I think they've shown Nate is a good person, but he's letting his insecurities get the best of him with his new found confidence. I'd be surprised if his arc doesn't end on a positive note.

I don't get this complaint at all. The cutaways to iPhone screens happen all of the time in tv/film during text conversations. The only way you know it's an iPhone is if you notice the notch at the top of the screen, but even then other phones have that. The only other product placement I've seen is the Apple logo on the back of a laptop. But again, that's extremely common.

Not sure what IOS specific feature you're talking about either.

But you're right, it would have just been zoom or something similar.
