Here in Colorado everyone gets a ballot mailed to them. We can mail it back, we can drop it off, or we can go vote live on election day. It works great, anyone who says otherwise is a liar or believes something a liar told them.

Oh wait, I'm that guy. I've come to accept mail in voting, but I still prefer the idea of everyone voting on the same day with the same information.

/but as an extension of that, voting should take no more than 10 minutes

I've been voting by mail in Oregon since I moved here 15 years ago, and never once has new information appeared that would make me want to change my vote.

Yeah, you're welcome to go stand in line while I fill out my ballot from the comfort of my living room. If you're in CA I suggest you get busy packing.

I believe that makes the entire west coast 100% mail-in voting. Welcome, California.

The actual ticking off the boxes or drawing a line corresponding to a candidate or a proposition's yes/no should take no more than 10 minutes. But, by god, take at least a day or so to read through the voter information packet to learn about the propositions, measures, and candidates.

Nah.

I used to go on election day every time, but I'm glad I signed up for mail-in since about 2014.  You can even still vote on election day using the same information, but you can fill out your ballot at home while you go down the ballot and research each proposition and candidate, and then just drop it off.  That's what I do.  In fact I often take a few days to fill it out depending on how much is on the ballot.  I think it helps me make more informed choices.

I don't really see an upside to insisting that everyone vote on the same day.  Also, vote-by-mail increases participation in low-turnout special elections.

austerity101: There's really no excuse for any Democrat-run state not to be primarily mail-in at this point. We know it works and it boosts engagement. Hell, all Democrat-run states should automatically register you to vote on your 17th birthday or something.

Anything that takes away the GQP's main tactic is a good thing.

I would love to be able to get out of this farkhole of a state. My now wife and I did our honeymoon as a roadtrip to NM and Colorado. CO is beautiful but way too out of our budget. NM we could do and still be able to visit CO on weekends.

I am at the point where I feel like a crazy person trying to convince her we need to get the fark out of Texas. I know shes beginning to come to terms with it but, the quicker the better.

The USPS is, and will continue to be, the backbone of our democracy. Kevin Costner f*cking said so.

There are plenty of affordable places to live in CO, where are you thinking of living in NM? The metros are expensive, that I will give you but if you are considering NM I bet you could find a place in CO...

Super Tuesday, 2020. I had a ballot all filled out for Pete Buttigieg, but hadn't mailed it, as my plan was to drop my ballot at the polling place when Mr SJF went to vote in person. (He'd been taken by surprise at Santa Clara going all mail-in ballots and had ignored the "you are no-party-preference, so you will get a generic ballot, or you may choose one of these party's ballots..." postcard and he'd wanted to choose the Democratic ballot...)

Anyway, Pete dropped out and asked me to vote for Joe. So while Mr SJF got his generic ballot exchanged for a Democratic one, my first ballot for Pete got voided out officially and they printed me a new one right then, which I took home with me to fill out since we still had a few days to actual election day. I am pretty sure we dropped off our ballots that Monday.

We usually have a 4 page ballot and mail in voting has worked just fine for us here.  You want to go vote in person,no one is stopping you but you do not  get to decide for the rest of us.  Anyone who thinks mail in voting is bad is welcome to move to a different state.  Imagine complaing about people having various ways to vote.

You can't go wrong by following Oregon's model, California. We've been successfully doing 100% vote-by-mail for over 20 years.

Oregon also gives you the option of dropping your ballot in one of the many drop boxes througout the state. It's handy if you forgot to mail in your ballot before the cutoff date, usually the Tuesday before the election day, or if you just feel more comfortable using one of the drop boxes. You can also drop it off at the elections office in your county.
