R. Kelly found guilty.

So at least there's that.

I mentioned this in the weekend thread but I'm gonna mention it here because I'm super proud.

I've been studying Japanese via Duolingo (& also the Genki series of textbooks) for the past 200 days & this weekend I got #1 spot in the Diamond league (the top leaderboard) & I'm kinda proud of it.

Parts of Trump's own voting base view him more skeptically now because of his support for the vaccine, and that skepticism has furthered him talking about "freedom" from mandates.

I've been studying Spanish the same way since the beginning of the year.  I can read it better now than I ever could.  Racked up my Diamond League win a couple of weeks ago.

/Holy hell, things get kinda dumb once you hit Diamond, though.  Some weeks, you can coast through comfortably; others, it's like you're paired up against people whose sole goal is to rack up enough XP to make the entire thing go TILT.

MCCONNELL: "We will support a clean continuing resolution that will prevent a government shutdown...We will not provide Republican votes for raising the debt limit."

"We will not be supplying Republican votes to raising the debt limit," McConnell reiterates. Senate GOP plans to block bill tonight to keep government open past Thursday because it includes a suspension of debt ceiling, something needed to avoid first-ever default by next month.

McConnell cited March 2006 debt ceiling hike that Democrats voted against while in mimority to support GOP's position today. Democrats didn't filibuster that hike, though, and it ultimately passed 52-48. Rs are now forcing 60 vote threshold.

The Washington Post:

Senate Republicans on Monday blocked a bill that would fund the government, provide billions of dollars in hurricane relief and stave off a default in U.S. debts, part of the party's renewed campaign to undermine President Biden's broader economic agenda.

The GOP's opposition dealt a death blow to the measure, which had passed the House last week, and now adds to the pressure on Democrats to devise their own path forward ahead of a series of urgent fiscal deadlines. A failure to address the issues could cause severe financial calamity, the White House has warned, potentially plunging the United States into another recession.

So, I've been waiting at the bus stop after work. Somebody just told me the bus drivers went on strike - again. They went on strike for a couple weeks bat the beginning of August.

Today is a much nicer day for a walk home than last time. Quite pleasant, actually. And a beautiful sunrise:

Well, it only took me an hour to walk home, with the bus drivers on strike.

This morning, I almost brought my headphones with me, but it was a scramble getting out the door on time. On my walk home I kept thinking I could've listened to a book on tape. I guess I can do that in the morning.

±++++++++++++

It is news that Ben Garrison has Covid. Not surprising news. His cartoons during the Obama years were often unintentionally hilarious, even if he showed an obsession with drawing slices of pepperoni pizza into them.

But during the Trump years they just got scary, really pushing a narrative. His "call to arms" cartoons prior to Jan 6 were something I'd been anticipating from Ben for years.

Maybe he'll recover from Covid, and decide to draw cartoons bringing peace and unity among people of all colors and nationalities. And then he'll buy me a pony!

Howdy maddites. I have a question. Do any of you know anything about how nursing home/rehab places deal with people with dementia? My mom is currently in the hospital after a bad fall, a severe urinary tract infection, and several days of unconsciousness. She is doing better now and they are ready to release her to a rehab facility. I am concerned because later in the day she gets kinda delusional (from Parkinson's) and thinks she can walk. It's hard to keep her in bed. How do they deal with patients like this? If someone is not there she will get up and hurt herself.
Incidentally the hospital here is packed with covid cases. She spent her first week here in the ER because there was no ICU space. She finally got a regular room. God damned antivaxer butt nuggets.
