it should be illegal everywhere
2004-10-21 11:43:30 PM
Still legal in Maryland, you mean?
2004-10-21 11:44:35 PM
Charges were dropped Thursday against a pregnant woman arrested and forced to the ground by Metro Transit Police for allegedly talking too loudly on a cellphone.

Forced to the ground? For being a loud asshat? Damn.

/didn't finish story, didn't care

The 23-year-old Aaron was arrested Sept. 9 at a subway station in the Maryland suburb of Wheaton and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

It's all Wil's fault.

/obvious...sorry, Wil. You know we love you.

Ms. Aaron sounds like she needs to go to charm school.

I've pretty much lost all faith in headline writers as being literate in English.
2004-10-21 11:53:06 PM
even if she was "resisting arrest" don't shove an pregnant woman on the ground. can anyone say "huge lawsuit"? i thought so.
2004-10-21 11:53:14 PM
but seriously, that's disturbing the peace. pregnant or not, she shouldn't have been swearing in public, cell phone or no cell phone, especially loudly...

i can't help but wonder what kind of environment her child's going to grow up in.

"i can't help but wonder what kind of environment her child's going to grow up in."

Probably a loud one.

So Canada has annexed Maryland?

Our plans of world domination are coming together quickly...

almost TOO quickly...

i can't help but wonder what kind of environment her child's going to grow up in

After the lawsuit goes through? I imagine quite a nice one...

So Canada has annexed Maryland?

But the real question is, do we really want Maryland?
2004-10-22 12:02:00 AM
Since WHEN Is WASHINGTON in Canada? Somebody has an over active imagination don't they. :-)

I was ready to run with this until I RTA.

Okay it's legal to yell over the phone in Canada, dry humping still illegal SHUCKS! Have to do my 1-800-phonesex indoors where no one can see from now on :-)

"even if she was "resisting arrest" don't shove an pregnant woman on the ground. can anyone say "huge lawsuit"? i thought so."

Calm down, Francis, at least the police didn't kick her in the box as well.

2004-10-22 12:04:53 AM
but you can still club a baby seal on the head...
2004-10-22 12:05:40 AM
"But the real question is, do we really want Maryland?"

I'd take Vermont. Maybe. At least they don't shove pregnant cell phone users on the ground like those Canadians in Washington.
2004-10-22 12:06:13 AM
Right, so now the only question is, how come the "Can you hear me now?" guy gets away with yelling into the phone on those commercials? If anything he's the one who should get arrested for interrupting my Comedy Central viewing with his foolishness.
2004-10-22 12:06:38 AM

Same thing I was thinking of. That's some funny shiat T.V.

I've shed many tears of laughter watching that show.
2004-10-22 12:22:58 AM
Submitter... funny stuff.

The rest of you.. think about it, my fellow terrorists.
2004-10-22 12:23:23 AM
Can you hear me now??
/apologies. Had to be done.
2004-10-22 12:25:49 AM
hey, you guys. I live in Maryland. It's great, except for all the Democrats.
2004-10-22 12:30:10 AM
By the mere mention that the pregnant woman was shoved to the ground I surmise that this didn't take place in Canada.
2004-10-22 12:32:12 AM
At least they don't shove pregnant cell phone users on the ground like those Canadians in Washington.

At least they didn't kick her in the box and shove her.

What's disturbing to me is not only the increasing use of force and arrest by cops against people in circumstances that don't warrant it (like this or the old lady that got tasered), but the enthusiastic support of alot of you for it! The lady who was arrested for chewing a candy bar, the school kid arrested for eating french fries, the 6 year old handcuffed in class for sexual assault, etc, etc. These things used to be handled with a few words of warning or a ticket! Do the words Police State mean anything to people? Or are we so blinded by our own pettiness and arrogance (it can't happen here) that we're basically like the frog being slowly boiled to death?

/just askin'
2004-10-22 12:44:08 AM
Guaranteed instant Riot.. Just remove alcohol..
2004-10-22 12:52:35 AM

not quite sure if yelling into cell phones is much of a tick on the police state radar...

but it might have to do with the same psychological process that leads to people accepting things like fights or murders right in front of their very eyes without actually doing anything

ie: get people into a state and yes, they will slowly boil alive and not care or notice
2004-10-22 01:00:59 AM
Bet the kid's first word will be a swear word
2004-10-22 01:06:52 AM

actually i wasn't getting all hyped up. it's just...she was pregnant, and obviously so (7 months.) kinda scary if you really think about it. had she not been pregnant...i say do what's necessary.
2004-10-22 01:25:14 AM
I knew there was a reason me and 100 of my best trained friends dropped into Maryland for some exercise. ALL YOUR STATES ARE BELONG TO US.
2004-10-22 01:44:31 AM

-That's sorta the point-the petty bullying and control. However, there are many more examples- much more chilling- going on out there if you pay attention to the news. Thins whole 'Free Speech Zone' crap for example. Or some of the provisions of the Patriot Act. But on a low-level basis, it's just the idea that you have to do what the cops tell you to do -NO MATTER WHAT-. Not out of respect for the law, or desire to be a good citizen, but out of FEAR. You can be locked up on the merest whim or slightest infraction. Sure the charges will most likely be dropped later (the System works?), but for most people the hassle, embarassment, and inconvenience is more than enough to keep them quiet about their 'rights' and 'freedoms'. People will talk about freedom in the present tense long after it's gone...

/extremism in the defense of Liberty in no vice...

Being pregnant is no excuse for being a total biatch.

I used to work loss prevention and one of the officers I worked with arrested a pregnant woman for shoplifting. She did the whole Courtney Love routine including swinging at a female officer, and then screamed brutality when she was pushed against a wall to get cuffs on her. Give me a break. If you care about your precious baby, how about not putting yourself in a position where someone won't have to restrain you?

If an officer has to tell you to start acting like a regular human being, how about using some self restraint and quit acting in a way that isn't offensive to others? The egocentrism of some people really pisses me off.

If I remember biology class correctly, a fetus is not made of glass, and is actually protected by the ab muscles and uterus. A woman restrained on the ground belly down wouldn't do any damage. If it did, how could pregnant women do something like yoga or other exercise?
2004-10-22 02:13:48 AM
Maryland is in Canada? that's that state with Boston in it right? :P
2004-10-22 02:19:06 AM
I think the officer in question was well within his rights given the supernatural nature of the situation. I have no medical background, but I do know that human fetuses don't take 11 months to mature. The guy probably figured the screaming was just a prelude to a disgusting feeding frenzy or something.
2004-10-22 02:58:31 AM
Just abort the child by capping the mom.

/against abortion, for killing babies
2004-10-22 03:47:14 AM
I think the officer in question was well within his rights given the supernatural nature of the situation.

Supernatural? Were ghosts swirling around the pregnant woman?
2004-10-22 04:21:34 AM
She's 7 months pregnant and due in do the math, that thing ain't human.
2004-10-22 06:48:26 AM
"Winfree said there were questions about whether prosecuting a seven months pregnant woman in such a case was a good use of "judicial resources."

So pregnant women are above the law now?
2004-10-22 08:00:32 AM
I think that cops, off duty or not who stroll around with a broom up their asses, forcing the rest of us to 'listen' to their walkie-talkie chirps should be maced.
2004-10-22 08:32:12 AM
The Canadian invasion of the United States begins!

/hang on... someone's knocking on my door...
2004-10-22 08:41:30 AM
Suede head
"Winfree said there were questions about whether prosecuting a seven months pregnant woman in such a case was a good use of "judicial resources."

I.e. do we need to arrest pregnant women for yelling into a cell phone? For murder, theft, sure. but yelling?

I'm surprised nobody's foaming at the mouth about the First Amendment yet.
2004-10-22 09:21:21 AM
I 0wn all of j00! I have a Nextel phone!

"Wassat? No he's still doing the sermon. The casket is on its way over. Hold on. I'll call you back, this casket is heavy."
2004-10-22 09:21:24 AM
I'm going to go shopping in Maryland so I can take advantage of the exchange rate with the Canadian dollar.
2004-10-22 10:49:00 AM
I'm surprised people are crying foul over the poster saying that Washington is in Canada. So you're saying you actually WANT all those politicians and lawyers in your country?

Not that I want them up here in Canada - you can take 99.9% of the a$$hat$ in Ottawa any day. I'm just saying that you may be overlooking the upside.
2004-10-22 10:55:48 AM
Being pregnant isn't a get of jail free card. She was told to stop but a cop and she told him to fark off. Any other person wold have been cuffed as well. No way she wins that law suit. Besides Canadian courts rarely hand large settlements for "pain and suffering" or "that cop was a bad man"
2004-10-22 12:16:21 PM
Not to condone the physical nature of the arrest, but if she is "due to give birth to a girl in February" then in early September when this happened she would have been at most 4 months pregnant (count backwards from Feb). At 4 months a pregnancy generally doesn't really show. So until she said she was, I don't expect that the officer would have known she was pregnant.
2004-10-22 01:08:35 PM
Two pieces of absolute common sense not used here.

Lesson 1. Don't disrespect cops. Aren't they like on your side?
lesson 2. Don't pin pregnant ladies to the ground unless absolutely freaking neccessary.
