A possum? Probably the best thing to rehab and release in North America.

Like seriously, what is wrong with Alabama? Outside of your crooked football programs what is there that doesn't suck?

Why would they surround his house with four game wardens? Is he some threat to the community?

Ah.

Pretty sure this was the plot of an NBC sitcom that ran for one season in 1980.

Give him the possum back guys, you don't expect him to just roll over and play dead over this.

"But what was I supposed to do? Let him die?"

Yes. That's how nature works.

As long as that crime isn't wrongful and dangerous handling of loaded weapons or beating the sweat of your kids. Or incest.

He would have been fine with a dozen tigers, a lemur, sloth, or other non-indigenous pet which is insane.
None of these are more suitable than a possum for many many reasons, but the state begs to differ.  Especially on face eating leopard pets that totally won't ever eat your face.

No wonder it was taken away.

Here's a fun fact. Possums and Opossums are different animals. Opossums live in America and is what this guy had. Possums are little brown guys that live in Australia.

Advice: get the hell out of Alabama

2021-09-27 8:38:42 AM
I know of a few people that rehab opossums. Out here no one is busting down doors for them sticking around, but they are trying to intentionally release them.
Still though, no one would care as far as I know.

If he had refrained from posting pictures of his "baby" all over social media, knowing it was illegal to have as a "pet" no one would have likely known. Instead he plastered pics all over Instagram and who knows where else and is shocked that game wardens showed up to remove the critter.
I'm not saying its right but there are laws, state and federal, concerning wildlife and its those guys job to enforce them. I commend him for nursing the toothy critter back to health and caring for him, I have done the same, cause possums are awesome critters, but once he was stabilized he should have turned the animal over to the licensed rehab center. I sent my guy to the same place in SC he was talking about along with his siblings and they were raised to a certain age and released back into the wild. I found them still on the back of their mother. She was hit by a car and four of the babies survived. I raised them to the point of being weened and then took them to Possum Pouch.
Moral of the story is do the right thing both by the animal and State / Federal laws.

"Suitable" does not come into it.  Period.  My dad raised rescued raccoons and a whole litter of foxes illegally. He knew it, but he wasn't a famous person and the game officer knew his word was good that they would be released. The 'coons had a complex wire cage system built into a tree in the yard.

Rabies is extremely rare in opossums, as their body temperature is too low for the virus to thrive. Opossums can, however, carry other diseases like tularemia, tuberculosis, spotted fever and toxoplasmosis.

Also: Opposums are the main carrier of a devastating horse disease called EPM. (Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis)

EPM is a disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. It's caused by the microbe, Sarcocystis neurona, COMMONLY found in the opossum. Horses that come in contact with opossum feces can develop neurologic disease.

The animals defecate in hay barns and in pastures where the feces are ingested by the horses.  The nerve damage takes place before the disease is noticed and frequently affects the hind legs. We chase them off or shoot them as varmits if they stick around.

There's something a bit twisted about his opossum being such a lovable pet because it was too sick to be aggressive.

In my former abode, I used to trap and release opossum almost every night. I lived in a house surrounded by high-traffic streets by a culvert leading from an undeveloped area. It created sort of a trap for animals that found their way in. They'd get a nice meal and flea treatment before being let off at the nature preserve. Otherwise, they'd fight each other and rip holes in my roof.

Meet my handsome little boy, Mister Puppy (RIP).

About 1 in 3 opossum are really tame and can easily be kept as animal companions after a couple day's adjustment. Mister Puppy had absolutely no aggression (or survival instinct) in him when I found him loitering in my back yard. He didn't even run. The first time I picked him up, he just stared at me stupidly. He had some fresh wounds, limb deformities and "crispy ear" so I intentionally kept him longer than most while we got his claws and ears healed up.

We ended up bonding and I knew he would not last long in the wild. By bonding, I mean this little fella was always frantic to climb up on me and ride on my shoulder. He'd snuffle and lub and eventually learned that my ears were not for biting. He enjoyed brushing and petting and belly rubs. He loved apple slices and hot dogs and would lose his little mind when I gave him still-warm rats fresh from the traps around the house. He'd sit up like a monkey eating a banana.

After 3 years, a somewhat longer life than most wild opossum, he passed away in the winter, after losing his appetite.

what a 100% douche nozzle ass hole that Mathew turd is.

He's a total "what about " turd whiff.

Everything he has to say is nothig but:
Yeah i knowingly broke the law and flagrantly posted it online for all to see, but why are they doing anything about me, what about all those other crimes that are far worse going on?

I'd be folding money this ass bag probably buys into the one broken window theory bullshiat at the same time.

Hey why you busting on my one broken window? What about those other broken windows?

Everyone that says "what about" as their defense of knowingly doing wrong, is total douche nozz that just brings our average lower.

Probably, likely if that is the case they killed it with in an hour of taking it and the remains may well have been destroyed as well.
