I automatically subtract three. Been doing that for going on two decades now.

And still, noone has answered subby...

Huh, all the time I've been here and I don't think I ever noticed that.

Probably helps that I've been living in either central or eastern that entire time so at most it's only off by an hour. (excepting vacations that are further away, but I don't tend to browse fark much on vacation)

I reject the concept of "decades". Years are an arbitrary measure.

I actually grew up just a few miles from the Eastern/Central boundary and had friends on both sides. We actually had to say "Your time or my time?" when scheduling things. I always thought it was funny that I could drive west 1/2 hour and arrive before I left. I was also aware that sunrise where I was was almost an hour later than sunrise on the other border of Eastern time.

Yet with all this horror, we managed to cope and get on with life.

This is why I hate a round Earth. Reject it. Accept the Flat Earth model.

I like the Eastern thing. It reminds me that shiat's going on Monday morning and I should probably go to bed.

Can't get out of the Eastern Time Zone here. That's fine with me.

Isn't the Eastern time zone the time zone that Christ was killed in?  That's why it's named that way.

Declare an independent microstate.  Choose your own time zone.

I heartily recommend something that's X hours and 45 minutes off from UTC, just to fark with people even more.

And what is the deal with Newfoundland?  Why do they stick with the 30 minute difference?

Sure you can.  Cory Doctorow wrote a book about it.

kkinnison: Time is relative.  reject authority and use UTC

As a software developer I approve this message. I wish everyone would switch to UTC rather than worrying about time zones.

Unfortunately the masses are too stupid to understand UTC time.

What we need to do is rid the world of the scourge that is daylight savings.  I put my money where my mouth is and moved to Arizona.  Time zones are a trifle to deal with.

Some people still call it GMT after almost 40 years.

Fellow developer. I also wish everyone would write their dates in ISO 8601 notation.

I have it set to saying 9 minutes ago, 3 hours ago etc.  No need to worry about time zone.

Animal psychology just doesn't work well with very large numbers though.  This is why humans typically count by 86400 or 31536000 sized blocks.  The setting of Glasshouse by Charles Stross had humans counting time by megaseconds and kiloseconds, which helped to show how alien the whole thing was.

Mostly this.  I can see a case for having date changes occur sometime during the night for reasons.  The world could easily get down to around 4 time zones - Americas, Europe/Africa, East and West Asia.  All 6 hours apart.  Wait a minute.  This is starting to sound suspiciously like Gene Ray's 4 sided time cube.  Huh.  Well, maybe the old kook was on to something after all.

Brunner's Stand on Zanzibar cut the earth down to a few time zones - GMT, Eastern (America), Pacific (America), and Pacific Conflict Zone time were the ones mentioned.  I don't recall if there was another to the east of GMT.

Fear the Clam: I'm still hoping New England goes Atlantic.

When someone in New England first proposed this, our (New Brunswick) premier at the time said he was thinking about switching us to Eastern time.  So a drive from Halifax to New York would start in Atlantic, go to Eastern, then Atlantic, then back to Eastern.  He is no longer premier.

If you wait long enough, it just says 1 hour ago.  Don't think time zone is relevant at that point.
