They're not real, article writer.

They're fictional characters.

They're Italian, but spelled with the I flipped upside down.

According to the oldest documentation, Mario and Luigi are Italian Americans, not just Italians.

I'm not sure that says anything at all about Wario and WaLuigi.

Obviously they're American Italians.

Overthinking this a lot, you'd actually need Orange and blue to be a new pairing, yes... but not good and evil. You may notice the opposite colors of Mario and Luigi are both good. Wario and WaLuigi are both bad. That would imply the new pairing is 2 neutrals.

In addition to being neutral, they'd be named Xxx, and the opposite would be? I don't think either would be Wa either, since neither are evil.  So either you just have new names like Giuseppe and Vincenzo... Or neutral versions of Mario and Luigi like  Xuigi and Xario. (X is a non M, L, W character).

I assure you my Facebook feed keeps me up to date on what pisses off Italian Americans, and there hasn't been a peep about this unless it was from a source I've already blocked.

Mario and Luigi are from Florence. Wario  and Waluigi are from Palermo.

I thought they retconned things so that Mario and Luigi originally grew up in the Mushroom Kingdom and were never Italian American New York plumbers?  So I was kind of assuming their nemeses were Mushroom Kingdom natives as well.

They're from the south Mushroom Kingdom.

Dr Dreidel: Chris Pratt is a gentile and as such is not party to the 1947 treaty between Jews and Italians that allows us to play each other in movies. He does not come from a yelling-based culture.

Having known a few Greeks, I feel like they should have been part of that treaty as well.  Or maybe they were too busy yelling at each other and missed the conference.

I thought the treaty was between italianos and latinos?

The evidence backs him up, as we can hear in 1996's Mario Kart 64 and Mario Party 1 & 2 Wario saying, "So ein Mist!"-or "Aw, darn!"-when things didn't go his way.

That's an awful lot of stupid to sit through. Like, "re-evaluate what your doing with your life" levels of stupid.
