Many moons ago I was a researcher for a Tory MP and had the opportunity to speak with/listen to IDS on several occasions.  I haven't been back to the UK in some time, but it's nice to know that he remains the font of knowledge, humility and good sense that I thought him to be all these years later.  He always was keen to listen to experts in various fields for a solid 5 minutes before explaining how his opinion was superior with such flattering language.

If the end result of this pandemic is a reduction in the size of the dumbass contingent of greater society, I can live with that, quite comfortably in fact.

Consider this: letting anti-vaxxers continue with their resistance  reduces the probability of Idiocracy becoming real.

It's not about relying on the public's "common sense".

It's about moving responsibility for inevitable future upticks on public behaviour rather than government incompetence.

There is absolutely no reason that the government should have lifted the indoor mask mandate, especially in supermarkets etc.

How did "trust common sense in people" worked on the war on obesity?

Yes.  Conservatism is a death cult regardless of what country it's in. Really surprised that point wasn't driven home 75-90 years ago.

Yeah a never ending lock down makes a lot more sense and would totally work because people are stupid and unscientific.

I sort of view Brexit the way they viewed our electing Trump**.

Best of luck, and I'm sorry for you sane ones.

Worst part? Poland and Hungary are now looking at exiting the EU so they can be as dictatorship as they wanna be. Turkey has already split off without saying so.

Just another Heartland Weirdass: Yeah a never ending lock down makes a lot more sense and would totally work because people are stupid and unscientific.

They could, you know, mandate* vaccines and solve the problem, but that would be too hard.

By mandate, I basically mean require vaccines for pretty much anything save absolute necessities. Getting vaccinated is still a choice, just that without a vaccine you can't travel, go into a nonessential store, attend any form of event, hold a job, etc.

FTFA: Moran, the opposition lawmaker, and other critics argue that moderate measures, such as better ventilation in schools and masks indoors, could avert the need for stringent restrictions this winter.

Turkey was never in the EU. They were going through the process of applying at one point, but the main sticking point was the EU insistence on res solving Cyprus.

So even before they decided they didn't want in after all, they weren't getting in.

If you have a pre-existing condition which means you can't be vaccinated, is there an exemption?

Wales has taken the best approach that I can see. In order to attend certain events, use certain facilities etc. you have to prove you are either vaccinated or recently tested not infected. If you aren't vaccinated you have to go through tests every day or so. You aren't allowed to spread the virus, but you do have the choice as to how you keep others safe.

Australia has a vaccine medical exemption program.  Nearly no one is eligible. You have to be allergic to all of the vaccines or have issues related to blood clotting problem or an enlarged heart.  The last two exemptions are only for 6 months.  People who are truly exempt have a very slight chance of catching covid and surviving.

I'm British, live here and am a member of the Conservative party. I didn't know IDS was even still an MP.   Checking Wikipedia I find his last job was minister for work and pensions, until the start of 2016.

Cuomo killed a lot of elderly by putting COVID positive patients in nursing homes. You're ok with that?

According to Reuters the UK has a 69.9% vac rate. USA is 59.3%. Cases are 350 and 258 per 100,000 people. How is the USA doing better?

US rates are trending down. UK is flattish.
