Sadly, only obvious to about 65% of the population. Many of whom vote against their own interests.

Next thing you'll tell me is people wearing no pants or underwear are more likely to leave brown streaks on the chairs.

It's sad, because you can prevent a kid or two from getting sick and maybe dying, and prevent hundreds or thousands of kids from infecting vulnerable people... by having them wear cloth masks.

And if you keep classes isolated from each other, you can keep outbreaks limited to a single class instead of making the whole school a single target.

And you can require teaching staff to get vaccinated.

But not only do you not see the GOP behind that, you see them stopping anyone who attempts it.  Because "wear a mask, limit contacts, get vaccinated if you are eligible" is apparently worse than killing a few percent of the population as a virus runs rampant and the healthcare system is overwhelmed.

It's OK though, you can send your sick to the hospitals of people who acted responsibly to make your problems their problems, and start GoFundMes to cover burial expenses.

The people most responsible for this - the ones holding public office - would long since have been dragged out in the streets by angry mobs and beaten to death in a sane society.

But every school can interpret the mandates differently. The school my niece goes to has them wear masks throughout the day, except for the one time that the entire school is packed in a single room together when eating lunch. You can't eat with a mask on, but they are un-doing the mask wearing for the entire rest of the day with this.

Caution: Anecdotal evidence ahead.

Our district has been fierce with masks, No exceptions. Band 12 feet apart for air instruments, chorus masked. Lunch in the gym 6 feet apart.

We did not have one single case spread during school. Not one. MASKS WORK.

Of course now the ignorant bioterrorist parents are storming school board meetings demanding that the mask mandate be removed because it is unnecessary because COVID hasn't been spreading in our school anyway.

These people are so f*cking stupid, I'm surprised they don't have to pay someone to remind them to breathe.

And as for the "masks cut off their oxygen!!" I have many pictures of our champion cross country and track teams setting records, masked. So f*ck off with that bullshiat.

namegoeshere: And as for the "masks cut off their oxygen!!"

My wife works in the medical industry and has to deal with patients claiming that all the time.  They'll ignore all the signs and storm into the office without a mask to 'prove' something.

I tell her she should offer to call 911 for an ambulance, because if you can't breathe through a cloth mask you're obviously in severe respiratory distress.

I could understand skepticism and debate early on and before information was available. But information is available now, everyone talks about COVID, and illnesses and deaths are only increasing. I have to think most people in the derp areas know people with COVID or at least hear about them. I had a neighbor family of four that all had it and had two in-laws die from it. A friend had serious injuries with an auto accident a week and a half ago, was refused transport to the two nearest and usually best-equipped hospitals because they are overrun with COVID cases.

(The wife/mother of the neighbor family, despite a couple irresponsible and outright dumb drug busts in the last year, was at least responsible with her COVID, warned me when I was about 25 feet away to stay away that she had it.)

So? Step one when fighting a killer virus, mask up. Step two vaccinate all willing people. Step three, total infection.

I'm not a social person and I come from a small family, so the circle of people I know in any meaningful way is fairly small.  I've been to two COVID Zoom funerals, and I have a friend whose wife has long haul symptoms.  I find it difficult to believe that by this point everyone hasn't had at least one 'friend of a friend' either die or be permanently affected.

States that don't give governors dictator powers during "catastrophic" events -- who use those power to sabotage health protocols -- have fewer and smaller COVID outbreaks.

Certain governors do not like to end their dictatorial power, so keeping the pandemic alive is not really counterintuitive but job security.

No of a sort about it

Here's my working theory: Republican voters (at least the ones who are at the front lines of the anti-vaxx/anti-mask hullabaloo) are sick and tired of being alive and see COVID as a perfect opportunity to depart from this world with no muss or fuss.

Who's joking?

It would be a joke if it wasn't going to happen.

Seated Democrats better grow some f**king testicles pretty damn soon if they plan on stopping what is overrunning what's left of the country before the midterm elections. At this rate, it's going to be a lost cause before then anyway.

SHUT DOWN FOX. ARREST, CONVICT AND IMPRISON THE ONES WHO GOT US HERE. WE ALL KNOW WHO THEY ARE. THEY DID IT IN FRONT OF LITERALLY ALL OF US.

And yet every day I still see protest signs and people calling governors child abusers for mandating K-12 mask use in my own state.

I've come to learn that I even have extended family members with little kids that believe they should be unmasked because of all the "toxins they're re-breathing in".

I just want to pack up my stuff and move far away to a magical place where people believe in and respect science and seemingly care for the general well-being of others. I believe this mythical place is New Zealand, right?

They do but denial is a powerful thing. They'll claim that either the cause of death is a lie or the people that died died only because of comorbidities.

Well, that was 2016 (he still lost the popular vote). He lost on 2010 and I don't see how anything has improved for him since then.

There's always cheating and voter suppression but barring that, I don't see him winning. If he even runs.

He doesn't have to have a chance. Because by that time, Trumpublicans will have changed the voting laws in enough states that it doesn't matter if the Democratic candidate gets 85% of the vote from both sides, he'll still be declared the "winner".

Hell, by that point the whole election process will be just smoke and mirrors anyway. Unless the Democrats take the gloves off and get to work NOW.

Well then I said it in another thread and should have said it in this one. The only way the republicans can win is with their voter suppression laws or outright cheating. Because they haven't won the popular vote since Bush Sr.

And in further study, those same schools still not likely to follow a mask mandate unless under threat of cut funding.

I basically haven't, I only know one person who had an elderly family family member die from covid.

But then again, I try to avoid stupid people. So, most people in general.

That can't be right. I have two smallpox scars. One is small, from when I was a kid. And one is recent, from when I went to Iraq for the DoD. I was born after 72.
