I feel like it's well passed "Leave Britney Alone" time and more arrived at "Beat Jamie Spears until candy comes out, then keep going" time

Errgh, of course in my hurry I posted the wrong link, although the one I posted isn't terrible. Here's Craig Ferguson's full monologue. It's awesome, and if you've got an alcoholic in your life they should see it too. Alcoholics can receive the help they need. Fark, if I can quit drinking from my extensive daily drinking habit then right off the bat I know most alcoholics can.

This is what looking out for Britney looks like. Just be caring, and follow your heart. Her dad is an arsehole.

Thanks for posting that (not sure your link worked but if you can't see it click 'reply' then copy the link minus the 'start=2' at then end, that worked for me.)

Yeah I never quite hit that point but if I'd gone much longer that would have been me. And yeah, I'm in AA like Craig Ferguson is and it's fantastic. My top tip to AA beginners is that the AA code requires (quite rightly) that each AA group is independent and self-managed, it's not a top-down organisation, so if you hook up with an AA group that isn't for you just keep trying until you find one that's awesome. There's a large variety of groups, and that's entirely part of the big AA plan, so don't write it off if at first you feel you don't fit in.

I'd usually giggle at a joke like that, but none of this Britney business is funny.

Can I find a themed one that'll let me quit drinking in the company of fellow alcoholic Trekkies?

There is one on TF on Tuesday evenings on the TF Discussion tab.  Seem like a welcoming bunch of people.

We need new laws governing conservatorship or guardianship of adults.

These laws need to restructure how these artificial situations are evaluated and to require regular, ongoing reevaluation of the subject that has been relegated to this involuntary status, along with a mandate to those operating the artificial situation to specifically work toward the goal of curing whatever created the need to do this to the subject in the first place.  The courts should be very strict with the guardians, scrutinizing and likely challenging all costs borne by the estate of the subject, and forcibly changing guardians when it looks like abuse of the structure or of the subject is occurring.

I have no doubt that Spears did need an intervention.  I also have no doubt that for such an intervention to work it needed to be pretty harsh.  That doesn't mean that it should have been in perpetuity though, and the laws governing these scenarios need to specifically be geared towards restoring the subject to full autonomy as the goal, or as much autonomy as the person can handle if full autonomy cannot be achieved.

As the child of a pair of alcoholics, I really admire those of you who've confronted your problems and strive to deal with them best you can. Because I never saw that happen up close.

Mr. Spears, you've been warned not to comment publicly until the legal proceedings are finished. Step away from the keyboard and have a juicebox.

I've actually seen social media posts defending Jamie Spears, including for bugging his daughter's phone and bedroom, because he was just trying to be a protective father, and it doesn't matter how old she gets, it's still his job..  It's always old creepy white guys who site purity culture.  You know each and every one of them made their daughter do that fake wedding where she promised him to keep her virginity.  You also know each and every one of these "protective" fathers would insist his daughter stay in an abusive relationship if she had married the guy in a church.
