NuclearPenguins: I gave up 3/4ths of the way though. Someone finish it and tell me that the cat was okay.

Cat is unmentioned later.

It's been a long pandemic for that writer. Salon should do a go fund me for a therapist.

I read about ten paragraphs of that article by the end of that I wished the author had been the one to die.

2021-09-26 1:48:20 AM
I couldn't make it through, either. I'm not sure why this is Zoom's fault, but I'm happy to join in the tech-hate, if it comes to that.

RIP, brother

A five page article about a death from a fall - you need to lead with the fall.

Actually: He didn't die from a fall. Probably an overdose.

I have a friend that is going through this

I used to worry about dying.

But then I came to terms with the fact that it won't matter much to me after that.

I used to worry about dying.

But then I tried reading that article and found myself hoping for death about halfway through.

Well, for all you haters, I can only hope you die alone after a prolonged period of isolation.

2021-09-26 5:54:47 AM
Could've been worse. He could've been cranking his hog to some truly shameful pornography.

The author could use a good therapist too.

What does the zoom call have to do with it? Did he fall off during one? If not, then why is she wondering if it was days till they found him etc.

/couldn't make it past 4 paragraphs

So long as it's physically painless, I'm okay with that.

Zoom call had nothing to do with guy's death of cardiovascular disease...

2021-09-26 6:21:08 AM
She is a WRITING prof.  Ooof.  Holy forced metaphor, Batman.

I'm genuinely sorry for her loss.  But this article is a solid argument for giving people real paid leave for everything from maternity to paternity to disability to bereavement.

shiat gets warped when you go through shiat, and you're not producing your best work.

sorry to hear about your dead brother from Oklahoma.  Can we talk about you some more?  I'd be psyched to see you turn it into 4 more paragraphs about your broken arm from over a decade ago.

And that has been an issue forever. She just gets to use the Zoom pandemic metaphor.

LarrySouth: Zoom call had nothing to do with guy's death of cardiovascular disease...

He probably used the toilet after the Zoom call but before he died. She could have talked about the pathos of dying on the throne and been lacking the same amount of relevance.

2021-09-26 6:53:14 AM
I didn't mind this. It's just a quick meditation on the mundane details of death for the individuals and families left behind. Morbid and bookish as we are, it touches on things that my sister and I have pondered and spoken about as we/our parents get older. Subby's Zoom focus draws more attention to that than the article does.

By no means a comparison, but there was something about it that made me recall reading The Road.

"Doctor... am I surrounded by all the people I treasure most in life?"

"Sir, the room is empty"

"Then yes"

One family member lives in Kansas, one lives in Pensylvania, one lives in Oklahoma, yet she is weirded out by the fact that they mostly had digital contact before the brother died?

Maybe don't move away from your family if you want to keep in touch physically. If anything the tech made it so that you kept in touch at all. In the olden times you'd get a letter delivered two weeks after he died. That is surreal. Not "I communicated with him over the internet and niw he is dead and now tech feels empty."

Lady, you may be a writing professor but you surely cannot hold a captive audience with your writing. Yeesh.

The cat is never mentioned again.
Her mom fell at a train station and died later as a result.
No clue why zoom was brought into this, because only a friend of hers witnessed a death via zoom.
She broke her arm in a snow tubing accident.
Her brother had untreated cardiovascular disease that likely killed him before he hit his head.

Please don't read this. It's awful writing.

Why was there a piece of ear lying on the floor?

Did the car eat him?

The cat should have eaten the author.

Yeah.
What happened to the cat?
His immediate family who woke him and gave him commitment and routine.

That essay captured the ephemeral nature of life and our disconnectedness in a technological society, exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn't.

2021-09-26 9:06:57 AM
wow, even trying to skim through that to the end was torturous!

to sum up: a basically 60 YO writing professor has an OLDER brother who dies at home, alone, during a pandemic. in oklahoma. with his cat in the house.

a high-blood-pressure-related cardiovascular event caused him to fall and violently strike his head on some tile. so he died. ZOOM was NOT involved in any way.

this is the author:

TLDR- nancy is very terrified of falls and of death. nancy needs therapy.

also, in her ending 50s, nancy still goes snow-n-ice tubing for fun, and has a boyfriend.

BUT, in her ending 50s, nancy is so unable to admit the physical processes of death that she tries to imagine it is JUST like seeing a glitchy-connection-lost end to a zoom call!

she imagines his cat paced the home "crying" -not noshing on him a little.

she imagines the only thing that could make the home/furniture stinky is "cat pee" -not rampant, melting decomp.

she fails to adequately thank her BRAND-NEW-cousin-in-law, an RN, for cleaning puddles of blood, and face skin, brain matter, and possibly liquifying adipose tissue, from "the dark stain" on the floor.....once again blaming the kitty for "piles of cat poo".

nancy needs grief counseling. and possibly to watch a bunch of documentaries on death and decomp, followed by some gruesome horror films!

i recommend she begins with this, Secrets of the Body Farm:
