And it's the only kind she's gotten since 2004.

Madonna's doing what now...?

63-year-old pop star also wore what's become her signature over her four-decade career - fishnets and a bustier - in addition to white wraparound sunglasses and a gleaming plate necklace that read "Trust No biatch

Oh SHE'S SO EDGY, LOOK AT HOW EDGY AND VASCULAR SHE IS, EVERYONE!

I mean... yeah?

I'm not sure why you're being skeptical that someone might be able to reap a financial benefit from even negative engagement when you're posting that skepticism on an internet forum with a like/dislike system that not only constantly posts articles specifically in order to provoke a negative reaction, but links to Twitter constantly where that behavior is essentially directly monetized.

Look, I get that Madonna is from the '80s and the way this was phrased is different, but "professional attention whoring" and "no such thing as bad publicity" are just different words for a thing that you should be pretty familiar with in the internet age.

Sounds like she's forgotten how to tune in to the zeitgeist and adjust her image, and is now just doing things to deliberately shock because she doesn't know what else to do.

Nah... She made that change a couple of decades ago.

Man, I remember that Gentlemen Prefer Blondes tribute back in - what, 1983?  Man that was a big thing.  Big thing.  Yup.  Way back then.  Anyways, there's weather outside and the local sports teams are having contests.  Alright see ya later!

She's unable to do the one thing that would keep her in the public's good books, which is to lighten up and stop taking herself so seriously. Dolly Parton and Cassandra Peterson are both older than Madonna, haven't changed their styles at all, and everyone loves them for it. Madonna tries repeating her old looks and everyone tells her she needs to grow up and let go of the past. The difference is that Cassandra and Dolly exude warmth and a real appreciation for their audiences, and they want everyone to have a good time at their shows. Madonna just wants to be the spoiled center of attention who can disdainfully look down upon her fans from up above on her gilded pedestal. It's no mystery why the first two remain beloved while Madonna just grows more and more tiresome year after year.

FTFA: Her Madgesty emerged from the pouring rain donning a slightly bent sparkling tiara above her blonde braids that boldly bore a profane phrase all-too-commonly heard on the streets of the Big Apple: "fark You."

Because nothing says "daring and rebellious" quite like a 63 year old woman who's worth $850 million, wearing fishnets and a bustier and acting as if it was still 1983:

Now it's a disco, but not for Lola
Still in dress she used to wear
Faded feathers in her hair
She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind
She lost her youth and she lost her Tony
Now she's lost her mind...

20 years ago, she would've been perfectly cast if they wanted to remake Sunset Blvd but change it from movie star to music star (just like how A Star is Born evolved from straight actress to musical actress to full time musician).

OK Boomer.

I'm working on a broader theory of aging in fame, or maybe just aging, and the key seems to be thus: Either be likeable or somehow still keep on making good stuff. Otherwise you'll end up being that jerkass old fart that rants at the cashier and your own family barely tolerates until they finally put you in a home. I worked on a cruise ship that mostly catered to retirees (Holland America Line) and most of them were incredibly nice. It's how you get by when you're too old to threaten people.

We all love Dolly Parton. Cassandra Peterson, Mel Brooks, and other old showbiz people who are likeable and still do the occasional small something or other. Then there's Stanley Kubrick who was by all accounts a jerkass, but finished Eyes Wide Shut literally days before dying at 70. Then there's John Cleese, who is also supposedly a jerkass, but mostly keeps it to himself and still does cameos.

Then there's the jerkasses who also have no talent left, like Madonna. Or the dozens of right-wing has-beens who mostly blame their lack of work on teh libs hating their politics or something, while starring in the latest direct-to-DVD film about a high school teacher with the courage to teach young-Earth creationism. But back to Madonna. The only song of her's made in the last several years that I've heard literally has a refrain that's partially "Biatch, I'm Madonna," and that's been pretty much her entire public persona, except for trying to be sexy by covering up everything but her fake cleavage (including covering her face), if TFA is any indication.

Look, still being sexy works for Elvira and Dolly Parton at this age because they actually are that sexy.. It's one of those "if you have to try hard and tell us you are all the time, then you aren't" things. Madonna, while she was hot once, was never the total knockout she seems to think she is, which is partly why her film Body of Evidenceis today considered so bad it's good.

TL;DR- To be successfully famous in old age, be nice/easy to work with and still have a smidgen of talent. If you're naturally still sexy, let it ooze off of you, but otherwise don't bother. Her current public persona is to keep acting like she's exactly who she was in 1989 and that is none of these things.

There's a more direct comparison with Dolly and Cassandra, though. They still put on the form-fitting costumes and fishnet stockings, and it still works for them. Heck, we'd be disappointed if they stopped. Betty White and Helen Mirren are just as loved, but they've adjusted their wardrobe over the years because they're just being themselves. Dolly, Elvira and Madonna have an iconic image they've crafted that isn't as flexible to change.

She had a #1 album in 2019? Was this known by anybody? Was it ever played on the radio? Seems like I at least hear a blurb about it somewhere when someone super famous releases something.

Meh. Back in the 80s-90s, Madonna was it. I don't think she was doing pit hair then.

For a singer with a weak voice, she's done well for herself.

I think I heard about this and turned to Wikipedia to refresh my memory.

Her 2019 album debuted at #1. Then it plummeted to #77 on week two and was out of the Billboard 200 by week three.

It sold on reputation alone.

/Oh, but it apparently did okay on this funny version of the list that doesn't count streaming listens!
