(Medical Xpress)   "Find the middle point between the hip and the genitals, make a fist and push as hard as you can." A good Friday night in Farkistan or new shark bite treatment? Why not both?   (medicalxpress.com) divider line

"make a fist and push as hard as you can..." So, giving sharks a good fisting it is then.

DNRTFA but presumably this is for trying to stop someone bleeding out when they're gonna bleed out anyway?

You're trying to get the word out? Why is there no diagram in the article? Internet based multi-media journalism is so sad these days.

How can this be "new"? I learned this years ago in a first aid class at my place of work, admittedly not specifically for a shark bite (not many of them in the Netherlands) but for heavy bleeding from the thigh or below.

No shiat.

I had some heart procedure done, and they had to go i through there.  After the procdure, some guy comes i whose sole job was to put pressure on the entry point for like 10 minutes until they were sure I wouldn't bleed.

So there I am, "operating" room mostly empty, plus me this guy, with his hands inches from my stuff.

...

*awkward [for me, anyway] silence*
...
Me: "So... d'you see that Hokies game this weekend?"

Mind you, this was the same procedure where the anesthesiologist said they wouldn't put me under because the risks outweighed the benefits and once it was all done I would realize it wasn't that bad anyway.

*procedure begins*
*several minutes later*

Me, to her second: "Do me a favor: when you see your boss, tell her she's a lying biatch."

Word of advice: don't get old and fat; ensuing heart problems can be annoying.

I'm surprised they didn't call this a "life hack!"

Someone should make vinyl stickers for surfboards. Maybe a hang tag for wetsuits.

Surfers, find out your blood type and mark that on your board and wetsuit.

Dogtags have been around for 100 years. Get some dogtags and wear them.

Or just put a circle on the wetsuit at the two points.

I had to read the whole article before my brain stopped reading push as punch and the headline and instruction started making sense.

It's a hacked off leg life hack.

His study showed that by making a fist and pressing down on the artery around 89.7% of blood flow was stopped, versus 43.8% using a surfboard leash as a make-shift tourniquet.

That's because people are idiots and either just tie a tourniquet or else stop tightening it if it hurts.  You have to tighten it till the blood flow stops even if the person you are using it on is screaming for you to stop.
