When I was a kid I had a bow with a 35 pound draw weight.   That would hurt if I managed to hit you, but it's not really going to stop anyone if they're really determined.

And I probably wouldn't be able to get a 2nd shot off.

A compound bow and a modern hunting broadhead will punch a hole straight through your body with multiple wound channels and still have ke left over for anyone behind you to have an exceptionally bad day.

This is so surprising - who could have know that a device humans invented only maybe 50,000 years ago that's been used for hunting and war for most of homo sapien sapien existence could still be used to murder someone today as well? Now that we're no longer made of flesh and bone but unicorn tears and fruity pebbles.

Bows aren't like guns though.  They don't kill that way.  They're more akin to a flying dagger.

Bullets kill through pure kinetic energy.  They basically damage tissue by dumping energy into it.  Arrows kill by cutting tissue instead.  That's why they're so effective, despite having *FAR* less kinetic energy than a typical modern hunting bullet.

How much less?  An arrow moving at 300 fps and weighing 360 grains has a kinetic energy of [whips out slide rule]....  about 72 foot/pounds.   That's a little bit less than a .22 Short (~85 ft/lbs), and just over half the energy of a .22 LR (130 ft/lbs).

And no one recommends hunting deer with a .22 Short, precisely because it doesn't have enough energy.

But arrows are more like stabbing the target with a really long knife.   If you were to restrain a deer and slowly push an arrow with a proper broadhead through its vitals, you'd still kill it, and about as quickly as it would die if you'd have shot it with that arrow.

In fact, once you get past the ability to force your broadhead completely through the deer, you don't gain all that much effectiveness as far as killing goes.   What you do gain by increasing the energy (almost always by higher arrow speeds) is a flatter shooting arrow, which makes it easier to hit your target because range estimation becomes less critical.

So quoting kinetic energy is a common fallacy when dealing with archery tackle.  Kinetic energy is a meaningless quantity in this case, but you see it commonly enough quoted when talking about bows with training wheels on them.

No one talks KE with traditional archery tackle, because people that use it aren't that silly.

Thirty-five pounds in a bow is enough to kill a person.   Especially if it's got a broadhead on it.

Arrows don't kill like bullets.  They kill more like knives, or with target or field points, more like icepicks.

Put more bluntly:

Arrows kill by hemorrhage.  You die of blood loss.

Bullets kill with kinetic energy disrupting tissues and organs function by transferring energy into the target.

Technically you die of blood loss either way (unless there is a central nervous system hit).   It's just the mechanism causing the blood loss is different.  For arrows, it's slicing tissue.  For bullets, it's tearing tissue.

NFAS rule is arrow or bolt speed less than 300 fps, that's about it, bow type is the only other factor and that's just to decide which peg you shoot from or what bow attachments are permitted.

There are a few YT channels that do primitive hunts with knapped heads and tools.  Def check by country/state - as that is not the kind of thing you want a game warden slamming you with if it isn't legal locally.

That being said, a properly knapped obsidian head can hard drop some game.  (Including The Most Dangerous Game, presumably...)

Probably not, even if the rules don't mention arrow heads, "field point" is the expected. Currently barebow and will be moving to longbow once I know my preferred draw weight, which is currently unknown as I've only been shooting for a few months. Taking a field quiver of arrows out of the boot of the car can get some odd looks, which is fun.

35lbs is a VERY weak bow. What did it shoot arrow darts with the soft plastic feathers? the average hunting bow has over 100 lbs of draw and can probably send an arrow close to clean through you. If its a broadhead and it hits you anywhere in the torso and you keep coming you can just go ahead and kill me, if you can catch me cause I'm gonna run till you bleed out.

Could kill, but probably wouldn't.  I didn't have broadheads either. the arrows were meant for hitting targets, not killing things. I still have one arrow from that set.  A couple of weeks ago, I used it to dust the hard to reach coils under my refrigerator.
