saw Medeski Martin and Wood in concert once, and they did a live mashup of Baby What I Say? and Fatboy Slims Weapon of Choice...it was bad ass.

A competent. professional band should be able to improv a basic R&B tune.  Ray's doing all the work; bass player and drummer make up the slack.  Rest of the crew *might* join in, or else just keep tempo.

Probably did it hundreds of time on the road, but we don't have any recordings of it.

Got a DVD of him doing a TV show in Brazil, a day before his 33d birthday in 1963; I think this is from that.  He did two shows, one a run through leading with "What'd I Say", and the second set (broadcast) ending with it.  The first set is hot, and it doesn't break for commercials, the second is still good, but a little more "confined" due to time schedules.  DVD is on Rhino, don't know if it's currently in print..

To clarify. The song was improvised in late '58 and released in mid' 59.  That to me (YMMV) makes this one of the earliest obviously Rock and Roll songs.  So FUN to listen to it still, now 7 decades later. Lightening in a bottle.

/ rock on Ray!
