Well. For a while, it was one Republican governor's handpicked cronies.

I'm going to guess they cut some corners with anti-cotrision treatment and exposed the lead in the old pipes again.

Emergency manager is gone since 2016, but likely the damage was done.

What is truly amazing is how Michigan, which is literally in physical contact with the Great Lakes, which is literally the world's largest reservoir of fresh water... keeps failing to provide clean water to it's citizens.

People pointed out that Flint wasn't an isolated case when that was breaking news. The US water supply is shakey in general.

Think about how bad the US power supply is, and that's actually a money maker.

Water is handled at the local level.  Seems thier elected officials have failed then yet they keep electing them.  The community next to them voted in and paid for fixing thier issue but this town seems unable to do so.

But yeah its some other people who are oppressing these folks. Not thier lack of community and desire to have safe drinking water.  Just like Flint and other places..this is a failure at the local level.

I'm confused by the racial angle here. Are we trying to imply that Black people aren't able to figure out the value of clean water, or trying to imply that the Evil White towns are like, hoarding all the good water for themselves?

Benton Harbor is 85% Black. They have a Black Supervisor (Cathy Yates), a Black clerk (Carolyn Phillips) and a bunch of Black trustees that I'm too lazy to enumerate.

They have their own water filtration plant. You can read all about it on their website: https://bentonchartertwp.org/departments/water-filtration it looks like they stopped publishing their annual water report in 2018. Heck - if you want - they even list the Water Plant Operators.

They called out St. Joseph in the article. They have a different water system. https://www.sjcity.com/government/20-departments/125-water-treatment-plant-utility-services-department

These are local issues. If there is a failing, it's at the local level. With local politicians who suck and local voters who don't care. And while this is all awful and everyone should have clean drinking water, why is this a racial based issue?

I strongly suspect the real issue is that nearby Saint Joseph has a median household income of ~62k while Benton Harbor has a median household income of ~22k. With property values to match. I'm too lazy to try and look up how much each spends on water treatment.

Probably not, but that doesn't mean the democrats that run the city haven't stepped on their dicks by not maintaining their town's water system over the years. How the holy fark is it "racist" that the the town hasn't fixed their own god damned problem over the years when the other towns around there have? It'll cost hundreds of millions to replace the pipes.  Absent having that money, not sure what the city can do after the damage is done.

The last governor passed a law that broke cities could be taken over by a governor appointed emergency manager.  The manager basically was king, even city council couldn't override.  In communities where this happened, the water suddenly got real bad.

You see, lead pipes are generally safe when they are old because they have so much calcification that it covers up the lead.  However, if you try to save money and go for a water source that isn't treated to prevent corrosion of the pipes, that lining goes away and then you start leaching lead into the water.

The lining is gone.  Those pipes won't be safe again for a long time, and we're talking hi dreda of miles of them.

I used to live in the Benton harbor area back in the late nineties.  Their water was fine back then.  The change came from the GOO appointed emergency manager, like they did with Flint.

Decades of systemic and institutionalized racism preventing accumulation of wealth by black families in America, leading to black towns with lower median incomes, a lower tax base with still similar infrastructure needs.  You think it's a coincidence that St. Joe just next door is almost all white and Benton Harbor all black?

I could go on, but it's pointless.  You are determined not to acknowledge injustice where injustice is obvious.

And even if they made themselves broke, that doesn't warrant coming in and ruini g their water system.

That's partly it.  They add orthophosphate at the water supply to create and maintain that coating. It doesn't corrode the pipe, it makes a layer over the inside of the pipe that prevents the water from directly touching the lead.

Because the layer steadily degrades, you must constantly add orthophosphate at the water supply to keep the layer in place.

In Flint, because of loophole shenanigans and the asshole emergency manager, they stopped adding the orthophosphate after switching water supplies.  All to save tens of dollars a day.

Do you not get that emergency managers made decisions that caused the lining in lead pipes to be eaten away?  Is that beyond your comprehension level?

Even if your argument is that Democrats mismanaged them and made them poor, Republicans poisoned them.  So yeah, they'll keep voting for Democrats I guess, poor is better than poisoned.

What that also means is that all Republicans have to do to be better than Democrats is not cause people to get sick and die.  And somehow they can't even manage that.  That's how pathetic Republicans and conservatives like you are.  For all your biatching about Democrats being bad, Republicans can't be in power for more than a couple of years without resulting in significant morbidity or mortality for their constituents.
