Lighthouses still exist and function?

Ballot BOX, subby, not the ballots.

The lengths that some countries will go to to make sure that everyone can vote always impresses me.

Then there's America....

Cafe Threads: Ballot BOX, subby, not the ballots.

It's both of those. Arrive with blank ballots and an empty box, leave with completed ballots inside the box (and whatever other paperwork goes along with them). No word on who supplies the pencils in this scenario.

These are about the last ones in North America that are staffed. Despite the best efforts of the Canadian Coast Guard to automate.

Cool story.  Thanks, subbs.

Well, I didn't even finish reading the article and I sure-as-shiat didn't read the thread, because I'm turned-on by this dichotomy of Canadian-fueled Democracy, and a weird sense of Magnum P.I. dude flying around in a silly helicopter.

And it's not that he was wrong for flying around in his helicopter, it was just silly.

But actually the whole show was silly. At least Vlasta Booth is doing the right thing, what with the elections and all that. I approve of her.

But what's with the name of Vlasta? I bet she was either totally made fun of in highschool, or she was held high like some Nordic Goddess.  Either way, I guarantee she is a dork.  :)

Helping people vote? That'll get you arrested in this country, well at least in Tex-ass anyway.

She makes great chocolates too.  Can attest.

Don't knock lighthouses, they're still useful as all hell.  Almost all light are automated now and knowing how to read navigational lights is critical for any mariner.

I'd be willing to work in a lighthouse if it included an internet connection.

I think it's a great story and I have fantasies about leaving the rat race and living in a lighthouse. Only me and the waves.

But really, this was the picture they used. It's like a micropenis of a lighthouse.

I remember reading about this in the last Federal Election, along with other work that was done to ensure that members of communities displaced by wildfires could exercise their franchise.

Meanwhile, in The States, a passel of GOP-controlled state legislatures are doing their level best to make it harder for people to vote.

You'll notice that when she landed she registered them to vote and checked their ID. This helicopter voting system isn't for all Canadians just the ones stuck out on rocks in the middle of the ocean if those gop states went to the Canadian system you'd probably still have people protesting. No drive through voting, no 24 hour voting, no ballot boxes scattered around town. We get vote by mail (you have to request the ballot), a few days of early voting, and then the vote on election day. That's it.

I get that the helicopter system is an outlier, but during previous elections, I've read about other efforts that Elections Canada makes to give people a chance to vote.  Many of the alternatives that you mention were only in place because of the pandemic.  A lot of them have since been discontinued in many states.
