"characterized by a variety of interesting and perspective-changing experiences."

I agree with this because that is what drives me. Those I know who have no interest in such things are perpetually mad at the world for some reason.  I feel for them.

To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.

Gosh, I sure hope we're not enemies, because I have no women.

Not that I disagree with you, Subby, but I think having the main goal of your life revolve around sex creates a much shorter life than you would normally think on average.

Once you get past the whole 'eat/eliminate/sleep/avoid being eaten' stuff, we're novelty-seeking social primates.  Feed that with novel experiences and friendly social experience, and you will be happier and feel like you've had a longer life (in a good way).

The difficulty is arranging for a constant stream of such things when in reality you have to spend a lot of effort just to have food, clothes, and a roof over your head and other people keep getting in your way.

This article forgets the main aspect of defining happiness: the neuropsychopharmicological aspect of it. Happiness is elevated levels of dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine, all alongside a medium-to-low level of cortisol. Elevated dopamine reduces the inherent pain of existence, serotonin increases the ability to dream of the future and plan for it, norepinephrine enhances the ability to remember the past and give you energy to enjoy the present, and low cortisol means you aren't burdened by fatigue in your daily life.

I finally finished a lot of my lifelong projects, and completed a few brain-wracking ones in the last few years.
I also completed building an awesome maker space for myself, and accumulated a lot of parts to be creative.

But in the last 3 years or so, I lost all of my friends, and the ability/time/opportunity to do any of the things I enjoy.

So I spend most of my time by myself, and feel depressed and useless. Sometimes the journey towards a quest, or having something to look forward to, fuels the drive to feel exited and happy, and reaching your goals just means an end to it all.

Stay busy on interesting things, and avoid those that slow you down.

I cannot click either funny or smart. I know what its like to lose folks , and the ability in certain areas to Not be able do some things hits close . .

Im not gonna bs you , but  I do wish you the best. I am one who is also rather depressed , most of the time. Its the norm for me, and has been for decades now. I find joy in odd buldings I see, or saving a single bee from one of my felines. Or in being really nice to those who do my grocery checkout.

I'm not depressed, but having accomplished all my reasonable life goals sticking around for another few decades waiting for something to kill me while my body slowly fails does seem pointless.  Maybe something interesting will happen, who knows?  But if I could pull a Rip Van Winkle until it does, that'd be nice.

I do suffer from depression so anything relating to life and happiness is of particular interest to me. As such I recall another key to happiness articles claiming it was down to three things: having someone to love, being loved, and having something to look forward to.

Seems to be pretty accurate. Also, some of those things are easier to achieve than others.

I practice erosophy as much as I can, because I don't just want to be friends with wisdom.
