What are the good things on HBOmax?
I thought "Free Guy" was up for streaming that next month or so.
And where is Orville landing?

I might get it if I knew something good was in the pipeline.

Well there's that horrible Dune remake that no one on these boards thinks is going anywhere.  I think the general consensus is that the Sting version was better.

Same questions here.  I'm ditching a few Amazon channels, having used them up, wondering if this might be worth it.  Interested to hear from Farkers who have it.

"Free Guy" - which is the most perfect video game movie of all time - will probably get dumped on Disney+ first because it's a Disney film. HBOMax is worth it if you've never seen:

The Wire
The Sporanos
Six Feet Under
Carnivale
The Outsider
The Night Of
Mare of Eastown
Eastbound and Down
Deadwood

Or really, any of their shows with the exception of Euphoria, which was clearly made for 13 year-olds. It's not a bad show, but it is aimed at someone way younger than I am. I'm rewatching The Wire and it's just as good the second time around. If you've seen most of the HBO shows it really isn't worth it unless you want the back catalog of South Park or Friends.

Occasionally they'll have a simultaneous theatrical/streaming release. This month they had "Cry Macho" with Clint Eastwood and "Malignant" - which is a great little horror movie with a big payoff. The new Matrix will also stream on December 22 - same time as in theaters.

Weirdly, because of deals made before the Disney/Fox merger, Free Guy actually is coming to HBO Max before Disney Plus: https://www.google.com/amp/s/variety.com/2021/film/news/free-guy-disney-plus-hbo-1235040893/amp/

Watchmen was great, especially considering just how bad it could have been.

I found the first episode of Lovecraft Country compelling but just couldn't get into it after that.

The aforementioned Euphoria is also really good. It's definitely not for 13 years olds.

Yeah, it definitely isn't the best interface. I'd give that to Amazon, if only for the X-Ray, which is farking brilliant. Also, HBO still has issues with multiple button pushes, like if you fast forward 15 seconds at a time more than two or three times, the video pauses or the app crashes on your iPad.

Interface score: F. Content score: Solid B.

Prime and Netflix have been dropping lower and lower on the content end but their interfaces are still good. Hulu is still great if the shows line up with what you want to watch. Disney+ is fine if you have kids or like Marvel movies, otherwise it's not really necessary. And Apple TV+ is hot garbage saved only by Ted Lasso. They don't have enough content to justify being a streaming service at all. It's like paying for a movie/TV studio to be founded while you watch if you don't get it for free.

No surprise there. Spent a bit of time with them in 2019 & 2020. It didn't look good at the time; I'm still wondering if COVID-19 did them more harm than good - on the one hand, captive audience & lots of content, but, on the other hand, the implementation nightmare they had right up until last year.

2021-09-18 11:40:03 PM
*shrugs* I've got HBO Max and Disney Plus, between them I can usually find something I want to watch but if I want to watch something specific that they don't have I'll just rent it on Amazon.  When I think about how much my parents paid for cable/Satellite TV and a weekly trip to Blockbuster I'm fine with letting go of about $30.00 a month.

Not sure if the two funnies to my reply were aimed at this part, but seriously, that show is not for 13 years olds.  I get someone not liking it, but it's chock full of tits, dicks, sex, drugs, rape, etc.  It'd be like saying "Kids" is a family film.

Yeah I'll get it. They rotate a lot of things I like from time to time. They've currently got a lot of older Adult Swim stuff like Venture Bros and Space Ghost too. Im currently binging a lot of samurai flicks too.  And I'm going to check out the new movies since I'm not going to theaters anymore.

Can we just go with a kind of 'mechanical' license for every movie and TV Show produced ever that's more than 15 years old?

No more exclusives, no more rotating in and out.

Wanna watch 7 Brides for 7 Brothers? Good. Pick your streaming channel of choice, and they cut MGM, et al a check at the end of the month for something like $.25. Same thing with the Matrix, or Mannix, or the Mary Tyler Moore Show, or Monsters, Inc.

Christ, it's the biggest IT growth field for the past five years! The problem is that IT people suck at it, and art people suck at IT. As a result, UI/UX people aren't paid nearly what they should be paid. It's like the new "web page designer" - you know when you have a bad one and don't realize when you have a great one.

DC Animated is all pretty damn solid. They have all the old Diniverse stuff (90's Batman), as well as a ton of one-off movies. There is a run of 16 animated movies that are in the same universe that is nothing short of remarkable (though they are not organized that way in the service, so you have to use Wikipedia to guide the order).

Several of the DC live action shows are worth checking out. I do not know why they advertise Titans like it's some CW bs. It is dope AF.

If you have at least a little interest in DC properties at all, it's worth it to peruse that shiat for 6 months.

On the other end of the spectrum they are the only service with anything resembling a decent catalog of classic movies (I cannot believe Amazon is not the prohibitive favorite for old movies). They have Charlie Chaplin, Westerns, Godzilla, a little Noir, lots of Kurasawa, most of the Godzilla films, tons more.

Oh, and they just added "A Different World," which is of no interest to most people, but pretty damn cool if you are a Sin Bad completionist.
