I'm no longer Spielberg's agent but if were, I'd ask him why he's spending his few remaining years on a musical, one that's been done a dozen times already.

...Sharks...I get it.

So I asked Steve about this - I call him Steve - and he basically said it's a can't-miss. Killer story, killer songs, all it really needs is a bunch of zooms into the faces of the characters and you really got something.

...do you think Rita Moreno would be doing the movie (not once, but twice...she is in this production) if she thought it was racist?

Hell, at the time she did it the first time, she couldn't get a non-ultra-stereotypical role for Latinas in film...and for many years afterward, despite winning a farking Oscar.

Couldn't give a shiat what she thinks. She's one actress.

There are plenty of Puerto Ricans who aren't rich actresses who are pretty farking clear on this.

It's just you're more likely to hear and be swayed by her opinion. That's all.

Or All Quiet On The Western Front. etc.

There are many films way more depressing than those 4. Old Yeller could be in the top 10. Maybe. Definitely in a top 100 list.

jake_lex: Is this something anyone asked for or particularly wants?  The original movie has not aged all that well.

The original has a pretty strong pro-immigration message and a white racist cop who actively antagonizes the PR street gang  (the white gang and the cop even share the same leitmotif which in musical theater terms marks them as closely related if not essentially the same)

It's a very very progressive story for its time (the book - that is to say the story of the musical was written by an author who had been blacklisted)

You clearly have never seen WSS. It's an updating of Romeo and Juliet with the feuding families replaced by street gangs. There is nothing racist about a Puerto Rican girl and an Anglo boy falling in love.

Back in 1957, it was a modern musical about juvenile delinquents, a topic much in the news back in the 50s. Now it's a period piece.

This is still a Bernstein and Sondheim musical, and Moreno is in the new film. Laurents and Robbins are dead.

What Spielberg brings is being one of the greatest living film directors.

This:

pro-immigration

right here is why it's a problem.

Puerto Ricans didn't immigrate to New York in the 50s. All the cutesy coming to America bullshiat is exactly that. They were Americans. They didn't immigrate. They moved, fleeing an American colony. It's this farking colonial apology bullshiat right here. This shiat reinforces that immigrant narrative.

Hey Steve! Want to do a great musical? Something like a quarter of a million Puerto Ricans fled after Maria, internally displaced American refugees right here in the USA in 2017, because TFG couldn't figure out a good grift and fark brown people. Bush did a heck of a job in comparison with Katrina, which is unimaginable. Haiti got earthquake relief faster by comparison. Maybe do an original musical on that.

I agree with you that Spielberg is a great director. Within the sci-fi and drama genres. A movie musical? His adaptation of War Horse was an overwrought cock up.

Jon Chu did the movie adaptation of In the Heights and is was brilliant.
