For like 3 years, I worked overnight at a gas station by myself. It was a lot like that video game appears to be, with one important exception: I spent most of my night playing video games that weren't related to my actual job.

Maybe they will be a DLC where your character can have a handheld game system, and instead of working at the gas station, you can just sit behind the counter and play a gas station simulator.

I was on the NY Turnpike and waked into one of the stations to catch the guy there playing COD

Because if it was anything like the modern retail experience of an overnight gas station you would simply be behind the counter reading a book or playing video games, mopping once in awhile because you're tired of sitting and then going home once your daytime replacement decides to show up.

I mean, they already had Big Rig Trucker and the Train one and all of those horrible ones decades ago.

I feel like there's a demographic of people that live doing things I would find vastly too tedious. And somehow people who want to make those games. Good on both of them, but I don't know understand that.

The train and trucker ones I can kinda understand, there's enthusiasts for both who would love to drive real ones. I can even get Power Wash Simulator, it's satisfying to deep clean something really dirty. But...maybe go clean something for real then? Those are things you don't have to pretend to do, I'm sure people will be happy to let you do it on their property for free.

Excellent question. The cost will be $10 a month (for the genuine experience). Unless the advanced AI algorithms detect that your "post" are completely hypocritical and one sided... in which case you'll get it for free.

Sometime in the next few weeks I'll be power-washing my siding and a bunch of the cinderblock (so I can prime and paint it), and I am salivating in anticipation.

I bought a cheap ($100) pressure washer a few weeks ago... got rid of the moss on my siding, the dirt on my truck, and the slippery layer of green algae in front of my front door... most satisfying thing I've done in years.

It's as popular as it is because it's good. It may not be as ambitious as, say, Doom Eternal or Breath Of The Wild or GTA 5; but it does what it tries to do as well as those others do their respective things, and is enough fun that players will want to keep playing.

Most "____ Simulator" games are like this, at least when the developer likes the thing/task being simulated, and also cares enough to try to make a game with good gameplay and few to no bugs.

I haven't played any of those, but I have played the demo for a psvr office simulator and it was quite fun.

Also, given the popularity of the Sims, I think it's a bit odd to pretend any of this is remotely new.

If I told you paperboy was about a boy delivering papers and was fun, you'd never believe me.

Not that it's new, just that the current rash of simulation games are apparently focused on chores that most people intentionally procrastinate in real life. I think it's weird, but not in a judgy way. Less, "WTF?" and more, "Huh. Okay."

I think this is because the games remove lots of small, unpleasant details that real life has.

Time constraints, storage space, upkeep and maintenance, mosquitos, injury, bankruptcy looming...

Even if present in the game, they are less annoying if they are simulated.

Even the most hard-core flight sims that I can find doesn't reflect the maintenance involved in keeping a hangar queen flight-worthy.

All of them find this one little groove and click into it. That these tasks aren't inherently unpleasant  and can be downright fun with the actual unpleasant parts simulated instead of real.

I bought the lawn mowing simulator because it was cheap and I don't live in a house anymore, but I really enjoyed cutting my grass back in the day. Lawn Mowing Simulator (the new one) is better than it sounds because you get to cut the grass but you can also take out loans, hire employees, and buy buildings to expand your empire. It's a little bit of grinding at the beginning, but once you start really succeeding it's a lot like older versions of SimCity - you watch your empire grow exponentially because you've done the correct legwork to make it work. It's far more in-depth than I was expecting for $10.

Of all the movies to end up monkey-pawed, I had to get monkey-pawed into Last Starfighter. But instead of a videogame that finds people to be real star fighter pilots, it finds people to be real virtual gas station attendants.
