And should you use screen doors in them?

Walker: And should you use screen doors in them?

Duh. You have to open the front screen door to let the sub fill with water. Then, you close it, and open the back screen door to push the sub forward when the water goes out.

the sub uses a photonics mast -- a piece of electronic wizardry that includes high-definition and infrared video -- to monitor the battlespace.

Cool. Can we find the Nessie now?

It's not that bad of a question. It gives context to the story and there are a lot of people don't know the advantages of the new program.

They're able to submerge longer. They're quieter and are less detectable by sonar.

I think I heard singing.

Assuming you're talking about nuke subs here, it's the other way around.  Nukes are noisier than the new AIP subs, which are incredibly quiet.

Enough so that the US borrowed one from Sweden years ago to run exercises in detecting AIP subs.   The exercises didn't go well

Easy to spot Subs that are nukes .. Look for the tall tunnel with a lot on steam coming out of it like three mile island  ..

Pretty much.

The simul-post is awesome when your post ends up first.

When your post is second, you're both highly amused (and somewhat frightened) someone's thinking on your exact same wavelength, but truly PO'd the other person was able to get their thought out seconds faster. It's like knowing all the answers on the Jeopardy! board, but having the returning champion beat you on the buzzer every ... single ... time.

Goddamnitsomuch.

Underrated comedy. Directed by David S. Ward of Major League and Sleepless in Seattle fame. Critics said it was just a bad McHale's Navy knockoff, but I thought it had more heart.

Nadie_AZ: More importantly, WHY are we arming Australia?

The plan is for the Australian subs to launch torpedoes full of Australian wildlife at the Chinese shoreline. It's the ultimate deterrent.

Use the vertical launch tubes to rain cane toads over China, and poison ivy seedlings.

Nadie_AZ: More importantly, WHY are we arming Australia?

Because China is getting too uppity for the western Pacific's good.

I guess we could stage some fast attack boats out of Australia, but we only have so many, and Russian boomers are still a thing.  Whether Australia gets nukes or AIPs, China will have to think a lot longer and harder before starting some shiat.  Giving Australia nuke boats gives them a longer reach and a bit more security (not having to surface occasionally) than the AIP boats France was going to design for them.
