Murflette: I had recently been pondering what the full cost of surviving covid might be. I dont have insurance so...

Yeah. That $80K is what he has to pay AFTER the insurance company covered the rest of his $2 million bill...

Sweeney claims the total billed cost of his stay was around $2 million. Sweeney said his insurance company told him that although the hospital was in his network, the doctors that treated him were not.

The thing is, we're in a pandemic, and he was treated by out-of-network doctors because we're in a goddamned pandemic - everyone's on deck, trying to save lives.

If you're not vaccinated, get vaccinated. It's way cheaper.

I've heard from a fair number of people now who I work with about how much covid cost them with insurance if they had to go in. Low number was 8K, high number had a lein on their house for $250K waiting for them when they got discharged.

I keep telling the idiots in my life who haven't gotten vaccinated what's waiting if they get sick.

America has been determined to do this in the dumbest, most expensive, deadliest way for some stupid reason.

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm sure glad we don't have that commie-socialist government healthcare here in the US. I'd hate to see people survive during a pandemic without going into massive debt.

Don't forget your insurance premiums paid the other millions of dollars this guy used up, and now he can't even afford the remainder.

Nevada man billed $80,000 for lengthy COVID hospital stay

So they only billed him for the first two weeks?

That wouldnt even cover two weeks.

Average cost of hospital stay is $30,000 for 3 days.

$80k buys you a week.

I'm in Canada and my family doctor is on the provincial COVID task force. I was in his office last week and he told me it costs just under $30k/day for an ICU bed. Of course there may be other costs on top. A quick search says that the average ICU stay in Canada is about 12 to 15 days. So let's say 13*30000= $390,000.

Or, you can get the vaccine. As of yesterday, there are 693 COVID patients across the country. That's about $21M per day.

So anti-maskers are costing the people of Canada millions and millions of dollars every single day, for their selfish freedumbs.

But I'm not overweight or old so like most people I didn't show any symptoms.

YMMV

Most plans have an out of pocket limit. It may be thousands of dollars, but still there is a limit even when out of network. Something is even worse than normal here.

I'm too appalled to laugh.

I recently had an inaugural bout of anaphylaxis and had to be taken to emergency by ambulance. I faced an ambulance fee and whatever a prescription for my epipen would cost me.

Thankfully, my group insurance covered the $150 ambulance ride and I was $20 out of pocket for my epipen (which I can claim against my income taxes, anyway). Without insurance, that still would have totaled $250 for both those things.  That's it.

Legislation for lowered pharmacy prices and single-payer systems work.  Please vote that way, people.

This is a great bill because competition between hospitals made it lower than it would've been in other countries like the UK!

"Sweeney said his insurance company told him that although the hospital was in his network, the doctors that treated him were not."

This is part of the normal billing process that is routinely fixed by the appeal process.  When at an in-network location uses an out-of-network provider when the patient is not given the ability to choose, insurance typically ends up covering it.

This is a farked up part of the American healthcare system. The idea that each doctor in your hospital might be an independent contractor is insane for many reasons.

Why would you have schadenfreude over someone who was hospitalized with COVID from November 2020 to February 2021 and doesn't appear from TFA to have been any kind of COVID denier?

Yup. In Canada, a trip to the ICU with covid is estimated at $50k (Canadian!) and the patient pays zero.

Oh and maybe your house if you live in a state that doesn't protect a lot of assets if you have to file.

Good.  I hope the hospitals collect on this debt.  My great nephew used to throw his hospital bills away.  That's when the hospital found him after an OD.  His mom uses her previous name and address.

Fatass at the airplane factory bragged that his kid racked up 4 million in hospital bills and since he couldn't pay it, the hospital said "Cool, bro.  We're not even mad.  Go buy a big Jeep.  You earned it"

Also, you can walk away from a mortgage if you tell the bank before that you are walking away from a mortgage.  According to Fatass.
