There is no turning back for the GOP now. Trump set the stage for this in 2020 and now the true believers in red states will fight any public health measures tooth and nail. A lot more people will have to die.

Also there's a substantial number of people who are apparently willing to make that sacrifice for him

So Florida covid deaths nearing Vietnam war deaths..

US covid deaths have already surpassed entire state populations (each, not combined) of Montana and Vermont and rapidly closing in on population of DC.

Per CNN, as of Tuesday night, 663,913 people in the US have died of Covid-19, according to Johns Hopkins University data. According to the US Census Bureau, the US population as of April 2020 was 331.4 million. That's 1 in ~500.

That's 200 per 100k.

In 2019, the US murder rate was 5 per 100,000 (16,425).

Of the 13,927 homicides for which the FBI received supplemental (weapon) data, more than 73 percent (73.7) of the homicides in 2019 involved the use of firearms. Nationally, that's ~3 deaths by firearm per 100k.

They'll carry a gun "for protection" but won't wear a mask or get vaccinated.

*sigh*

and if we wait long enough the covid deaths in Florida will drop to zero. you are really onto something. it is not that hospitals are so jammed up they cannot admit new patients, it is not that testing is way down due to logistical reasons. nope, it is that the anti-mask, anti-vax policies are working. moron.

everyone is a disease vector. Root for the virus to spread is laughable stupid, even if you're happy the unvaccinated are dead

It's not that we truly don't care, it's that everyone has the FREE tools, ie the vaccine, masking, social distancing etc to protect themselves from covid.

It's equivalent to having no sympathy for a parent(s) that leave loaded guns around and then one of their kids kills themselves or someone else. I have great sympathy for the child who used the gun, just as I have a lot of sympathy for the dead child.

What I absolutely do not have, is one iota of sympathy for the parents who left the gun, loaded, lieing about.

It's not the deaths that we're angry about, it's the willful refusal of the highest government official in the state of Florida to do anything to prevent them.

So we're in NC, and bordered on 3 sides by derp, and it's starting to get weird how many people we know well are getting sick and/or dying.   When it's an abstraction, like it was in the nursing homes at the beginning, it was like 'yeah that guy was pretty old, man that sucks'.    Fall 2021 isn't like that, we know 10 dead people from our rural area that were under 50, maybe more.   The local restaurant owners are dying, the clergy is dying, the local dance teacher died, 2 hairdressers, and it's a town of about 10k people.  And we're just getting started on what is the traditional 'flu season', god help us.   And yeah, we border Cawthorn's district, so there's a lot of stupid, but there's also a lot of people who just don't trust the government about anything anymore.  Regardless, I've been to more funerals in the last month than in the last 15 years, and a lot of it is creeping north from Florida, so fark DESANTIS.

Yeah, we've been hearing "Florida has had the largest drop in cases ever, and they pulled it off by doing nothing, neener neener!" for an entire year now. And yet, somehow, their numbers keep going up.

/The GOP thought the biggest gift C19 gave them was initially focusing on Dem cities, turns out the gift was taking a week longer than the average GOP voter's attention span to kill them.
