(WEAR Pensacola)   Airman texts bomb threat against Eglin AFB dining facility to another airman who immediately reports him to superiors. Back in my day, we'd use pay phones to make bomb threats, by golly   (weartv.com) divider line

That's what an Air Force dining facility looks like today?
I can only imagine what a navy facility looks like. You will need reservations 3 day in advance.
That's a joke, for those that don't know.

Airman Fa'd and now he is about to FO.

It's an Air Farce DFAC. I heard fantastical stories about how much better the food was than Army DFACs.

Oh it's some other Elgin, not the Sausage Capital of the World, 30 minutes driving from here. Can't care less.

OK, dude, I get it... "smuuthies" gets your spelling-nazi eye twitching like Chief Inspector Dreyfus. But pick your battles and/or your weapons. A Sharpie or a bottle of Wite-Out would have made your point just as well, and saved you a stint in Leavenworth.

/only because my granddad was stationed there, retired there, and had a street named after him for building these first house on his street.

The DFAC at Aviano Air Base, Italy had a solarium.

Mongolian Night at Al Dhafra Air Base was pretty farking impressive.

That awkward moment when your phone autocorrects "restroom" to "restaurant"....

this moron could face a variety of charges or nothing worse than an Article 15

Holy crap. When I was in USMC you'd be lucky if they didn't just throw the chili mac at your face and yell at you to get out of line. This is the chowhall at the airbase? It even has a name?

Wasn't there an article here about a (possibly Florida) man questioned after he entered a Walmart bathroom, warning the other patrons to leave as he was "about to blow this place up?"

It has a substantial civilian population.

After seeing the Minks thread, I initially misread this as "Animal texts bomb threat".

When I was stationed at Ft Carson, we would sometimes drive to Peterson AFB for their "Dining Facility" instead of our "chow hall".  Back then (early 90's), the Peterson "Dining Facility" was akin to an upscale Golden Corral, maybe a low end Las Vegas buffet.  We regularly went for "night snack" at Peterson AFB, a separate facility that served until 11 PM, while higher quality than our chow hall, it had fewer options than the "Dining Facility".

//in retrospect I should have been in the Air Force, that is some cake duty
///but the Army was giving twice as much college fund as the AF, and the Navy was well, the Navy, my tent will never sink

They completely misunderstood! He said "I'll be dropping some bombs at the chow hall bathroom after a bowl of their Chief's Special Chili"

I almost forgot to add, how did this dude get into the Air Force if he texts bomb threats?  Sounds more like a Marine to me, lol.

Civilians are not allowed to eat at the DFAC.

CSB: In basic training we would get fried scallops, omelets, good food. Next to no time to eat it, but good food.

When I got to my first duty station there was a fresh fruit bar where I would load up to make smoothies for dinner. And as a special treat, they had a soft serve ice cream dispenser that served raspberry chocolate chip. So good.

Not that the Army DFACs were bad. I had very good experiences with them in Germany and Ft Gordon.

For some, it's their best option out of high school (lack of nearby colleges, no school support/mentorship, parents without post-high school education, poor local labor market, etc.).

For some, it's their only option (poor grades, below average IQ, lack of interest in higher education, inability to plan, poor decision making, inability to obtain scholarships, criminal history).

Allow me to rephrase: The base has a substantial population of civilian Air Force employees; far more than an average facility.

Omg, you have no idea.
Did a 2 week training at Vandenberg.  Chow hall was amazing. First time I ate there, I couldn't find where to take my tray.  I asked someone what to do with it and he looked at me like I was crazy. Says "You just leave it on the table. What else would you do with it?"

I used to work at Eglin, so getting a kick. Worked at the telemetry lab as a contractor. Got to see weapons tests, so that was kinda neat. Saw the first MOAB test live on closed circuit.

Fun fact: We rent our F16s to other countries to test their weapons (like the brits). They pay $20k an hour. And if they shoot down a F4 Phantom (converted to a drone) they pay a cool million.

Had an army officer that was prior AF. He actually took offense if you called the army DFAC 'chow hall'. He did some dfac officer shiat there (don't really know what)  and any time I ever said anything about the chow hall he'd get agitated and say "it's NOT a chow hall! The correct term is Dinning Facility!"

They started that a few years before I retired, the preferred nomenclature was "Dining Facility". Not sure why they found chow hall so upsetting, but I was corrected more than once by senior officers when I called it that. I never found it insulting or in bad taste, I ate there all the time, got a damn good meal for 5 bucks.

Shipboard Navy food ain't bad. The shore mess hall was okay but better to visit when an inspection was planned for. Five stars.

I was pretty happy with anything though. Food is food.

Was it a actual bomb threat or was is it a "swear to God, of the tator tots are cold again I'll blow the place up"?

We just about ran out of QF-4s.
Several years ago, they started converting early model F-16s, and use those now.

Perhaps some who have multiple options joint out of a sense of duty and a desire to serve their country.  Frankly, I served with some from all three groups, but very few from the low IQ group as my branch of service didn't take many with low scores.

The idea the military service is for the poor and uneducated and stupid is outdated and has been for many years.
Yes, all those are represented. We (in my case, was) are a microcosm of society.

The modern U.S.military has taken an up or out attitude. Challenge yourself and progress or you are out.
They want the motivated career minded "professional".
The idea of hiding while putting in your time is over.

That is a small reason why we have retention issues.
