Paul Ryan never struck me as NPD. Everybody has some characteristics of every personality disorder, & they're all on a continuum. More to the point, pretty much every politician is more narcissistic than your average shlub, but that's not the same as NPD.

Good thing Paul Ryan was able to bravely run away instead of doing something dumb like standing up for our nation as an elected official.

Ryan was a dinosaur in a young man's body. He actually believed all his economic ideas and plans would be fully embraced by the GOP and by enough democrats to make him a political star. It's obvious he didn't anticipate just how much the Tea Party/Trumpist element had taken over, and faced with it he just said fark it. Ryan wasn't a name calling type and he doesn't seem to have a strong stomach for obvious idiocy. He was just an anochronism.

Called bullshiat before I even clicked the link, which states that Paul Ryan spoke with a doctor who believed Trump had narcissistic personality disorder. Paul Ryan's reaction, which I do believe was likely his genuine reaction, was "What?".

Medications were withheld when I was a teenager.

Trump withheld Covid-19 mitigation early in the pandemic.

Now my fellow Americans are maimed and traumatized and psychosis is one of several possible consequences of long haul Covid-19.

How did Paul Ryan not know about Narcissistic Personality Disorder? I was once directly involved with a political campaign, and it took me less than a year to go from "Why would someone on the team spend so much time sabotaging themselves and others?" to "Oh, my this behavior has a clear diagnosis called NPD and those with the disorder are attracted to politics at far, far higher rates than--oh, look! Another one. And another. Time to go gray rock."

I might be on the autism spectrum and even I can practically smell it on people. So again, how was Paul Ryan so high up in office and so oblivious?

Now, I enjoy Bob Woodward books, but here's the thing. He gets people to talk to him by making them look good in print. Fear had parts that made Lindsay Graham, Steve Bannon and Rob Porter look like intellectual and moral heroes.

If there's a portion of a Bob Woodward book that makes a known asshole look like a moral standard-bearer, and also describes that person's inner thoughts, just understand that the person is a source, and this is the price Woodward is willing to pay. Just take the good with the bad, and take those parts with a gigantic heap of salt.

Yeah, my wife said exactly that about him in early 2016 after just a few moments of hearing and watching him.  She said he had the same sociopath smile and speech cadence as her mother.

The underlying pathology of NPD tends to drive these types of people into obtaining power, it's like a sick feedback loop as 'normal' people feel this need to kowtow to a person they don't fundamentally understand. I mean look at Trump's kids, who are twisted farking wrecks of human beings.

People are susceptible to the superficial charm of these sociopaths. And the ones who know what they are dealing with have almost the opposite reaction to the sight of one, I mean look how it farked you up. The night I watched Trump give his RNC speech in 2016 was the last night I had a good night's sleep until Biden took office.

The best way to heal a person with NPD is to drop them into a volcano.

In my case, I recognized it but didn't know what it was. I've used "grey rocking" since I was little but didn't know it was a thing, as it was just how my father dealt with my mother. He didn't know it either, as he learned it from his father. I spent five years with my NPD ex and they, thankfully, thought they could do better. They were actually really good at it so it was easy to rationalize the times it leaked out and I didn't even realize they had the same problem until the end when they no longer had to fake being normal.

When Trump was elected, I was devastated because he represented pretty much everything I hate about people and I had survived up to that point by convincing myself it was just a small minority of people and that my experiences were not an accurate sampling of the population. While basic psychology classes may make a passing mention of it, they don't cover what it actually is. I had a few professors in college who I thought, at the time, were either stupid or mentally unstable but, in hindsight, they were clearly NPD (including the one teaching my psych 101 class).

After spending a huge amount of time looking into it, I realized that I didn't know what it was because the thought process was inconceivable to a normal person. It's almost purposeful schizophrenia in someone who believes their existence is based on their belief that they are perfectly normal. They make themselves psychotic, in a sense, to deal with the consequences of that psychosis and the solution seems so frustratingly simple yet it isn't. It looks like unbelievable stupidity but it isn't because it works well enough for them and, when it doesn't, it's somebody else's fault.

As an engineer, my favorite solutions are when I figure out how to "cut the knot" (i.e. re-arrange things to bypass a problem entirely). It's almost impressive that these people have been able to generalize that kind of solution and use it on everything by detaching themselves from the reality in which that problem exists and solving only the problem of their perception of it.

No idea where he got that idea.

That definition fits literally 99% of politicians.

People who want to "serve their communities" become social workers and paramedics and local organizers and volunteer at food banks and homeless shelters.

People who become politicians mostly go by the crazy farking Trumpbrain quote where he said "I alone can fix this".  And they get into the belly of the beast and they get digested and shat out as a standard power-hungry corrupt piece of crap.

CSB:  I work at a university and in 2016 we invited a just retired congressman to lecture in some workshops.  The guy was a very long standing and very liberal congressman.

We had a chance to chat and he mentioned that Ryan had very strong presidential aspirations (yeah, we all knew that) but then said he had no chance.  Speakers never get elected to president, the position is way to partisan.

Speakers are tied to every vote the House makes and have a legacy of decisions that can be used against them in a primary or election from both their opposition and their base.  Anyway, it made sense to me.  I don't think we'll ever see him as a viable candidate, if for no other reason.

Dear old mom was controlling, had NPD, probably had Munchausen's by proxy (she always told me and everyone else that I was frail and couldn't handle a lot of things, hugely overinflating stuff my doctor's would tell her), and I'm pretty sure she was bipolar. Her psychological abuse led me to internet comment sections, and I've probably spent way too much time analyzing Trump because I can see how he infected so many people into following him. Hell, the one thing he didn't con my mom into was donating money to his personal pocketbook--that I know of.

To me, it's more like this: In very much the same way my mom didn't believe in talking about depression or anxiety, therefore it didn't exist until I tried to hurt myself, Trump downplayed COVID until an obscenely large number of Americans had it and died from it. At that point, maybe we should do something about it.

Ryan sat with his thumb in his ass the past 4 years.

As far as reality is concerned, he didn't "claim" anything.
