I spent the last couple years listening to the 2012 list of the top 100 albums.  It was way too Boomery, with way too much Dylan, Beatles and Springsteen in particular.  I like these artists, but you don't need 15 dylan albums on there.

I've started with the 2020 list too, and now I find it too Millennial-y.   They added a ton of stuff that wasn't done by white guys, while bumping off some good artists from the list.  I'm all for inclusion, but they really seemed to reach for some of it.  There is no way that Solange belongs on that list and ZZ Top doesn't.

In any event, these lists just chase trends for the most part.

//  And Kanye, Frank Ocean, Drake and their ilk don't belong anywhere near this list.  Modern rap sucks balls.  Add more EPMD, Public Enemy and Beastie Boys.

Very woke list.

Everything you need to know about it can be summed up very simply.

'Hey, Ya!' is the #10 best song ever

/I'm willing to accept their #1 song, Aretha was amazing

Oh, and Comfortably Numb slotted right behind Billie Eilish's Bad Guy.

Yeah, that makes sense

After not trying at all, they're now trying way way too hard.

You have 15+ years to compile these lists, you dolts.

The whole concept of an "of all time" list like this is flawed from the start, you simply can't compare songs that go back 40-50-60 years with ones from the last few years. Newer songs haven't been around long enough to know if they'll stand the test of time and remain popular.

Also, "14. The Kinks, Waterloo Sunset". Really? Not Lola, or You Really Got Me?

Long overdue among the top of the pantheon: Laura Nyro. I don't know if she gets a mention. At all.

There's an interesting game to play. Take that 500 -- and I haven't looked at it -- and it would be trivial to produce a completely different list of 500 other songs.

-- back from a peek at the first page --

Midnight Train to Georgia. As good a song as the 70s produced. Performed wonderfully. RS's rating? In the high 400s.

The article plays a kind of trivial game. So What by Miles Davis and a song by Robert Johnson are thrown in merely for show. So What isn't a song at all. Are you supposed to sing "so what" to yourself at the end of the phrase?  And once you start acknowledging actual songs from the 30s , you can't stop with just a couple. The span from 1920-1950 produced America's greatest songs. Even if you artificially backstop your list at the late 1930s to allow Robert Johnson's back door sneak, there are hundreds of other songs from that era that are still being sung. I sing one -- I Can't Get Started (1937)  -- almost every morning in my shower.  The Andrews Sisters alone produced an amazing catalog of hits. I believe by any standard they're the greatest "girl group" of all time. Do they get a mention? I don't know and I'm not going to check.

I was joking. We (classical composers) all threw up the day he premiered that one-movement orchestral piece of sh...  When I first heard it I was appalled, I couldn't believe it was real.  I thought someone had copied first sheet 10 times a joke. But I underestimated just how low Ravel will go.  By saying it has too few notes Amadeus simply expressed what we were all feeling.

My top 500 changes every week, if I bother to write it down.  Depends on the mood, the style I'm into, and a whole lotta other factors.  There is no definitive list, for anyone.  We can all pick our own.

Oh hey, look. They threw in a bunch of hip-hop stuff. They put "Back that Ass Up" in there? WTF? There's gotta be something better than that. Let me search through this... nope, nothing by them... or them either.... or that guy... wait, they put in that song? That group has a dozen others better than that one.

Yep, list fails.

Ok, I just combed through the entire list and extracted all the Hip Hop and their ranked positions. It's senseless. It's like a bunch of people who are NOT fans of Hip Hop got together and listed songs they heard before and then just tossed them into the list every now and then. There's NO other reason to explain this:

116: Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock, 'It Takes Two'

Forget Hip Hop for a moment. Suppose you were hanging out with some people and just throwing out the titles of the greatest songs in the world, any category. Rolling Stone wants us to believe that this song had the potential to come up in that discussion and be seriously considered.

And now for Hip Hop fans, did you have any idea that Rob Base and DJ Easy Rock had a song better than anything Eric B & Rakim did? Or A Tribe Called Quest? Or De La Soul (who aren't even mentioned in the list!!) or Beasties, Eminem, Ice Cube, Run DMC...

Early 70s.  I'm a gen-x kid with my formative years in the 1980s.

The lists I was talking about were only 8 years apart.  The 2012 list leaned HEAVILY on 60s artists, and the 2020 new list adds a ton of albums that haven't really had a chance to stand the test of time yet.

For example, the 2020 album list added things like:
Del Ray, Lana - Norman farking Rockwell - 2019
Spears, Britney - Blackout - 2017
Musgraves, Kacey - Golden Hour - 2018
3 Kanye records, 2 Drake records, 2 Frank ocean records.

It removed things like :
AC/DC - Highway to Hell - 1979
Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic - 1975

And completely bumped these artists from the list:
Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking - 1988
Soundgarden - Superunknown - 1994
ZZ Top - Eliminator - 1983
Meat Loaf - Bat Out of Hell - 1977

Still managed to keep 10 Dylan records on there tho'...

There are some great new additions on the new list (Bill Withers, Charles Mingus, Motorhead), but It seems pretty weird to bump some classic albums for a pop album that is just a few years old.
