Yeah, I got confused too.  So, you just toast bread and put a piece of cheese on it?

It's my favorite dish.

Is there a large Portuguese community in Wisconsin?

No.
A grilled cheese is a sandwich. two slices of bread, cheese in the middle. grilled in a skillet, generally with some butter. can be made with pickles, jalapenos or other ingredients.
basically a grilled ham and cheese sandwich, with no ham.

Cheese toast, is toast. Toast that requires a toaster oven to make.  You toast the bread  with the cheese on it when you toast it. The cheese should just slightly crisp up a little here and there on the top. And commonly a little sprinkle of sugar is added before toasting too.

though the article link itself has a terrible cheese toast sin picture in it. That's not real cheese, that's using that plastic wrapped yellow dyed got real close to some milk during the manufacturing process American "cheese."
Works best in my xp, with a mild cheddar.

"Mild" Cheddar? That sure is a funny way to spell extra-sharp cheddar.

Not that I'm aware of... what you see there is the Francesinha. It's a little like a croq monseuir with a ton of melted cheese on top with the egg in the middle then topped with a spiced tomato consume.

It's wonderful.

American cheese IS a mild cheddar. It's also called (more accurately) American cheddar, and there's a white version. Kraft singles and the generic versions are not the same thing as American cheddar/cheese, even if they are called that. If you go to a decent deli and buy American cheese, you'll get a very decent mild cheese that melts easily.

Also, either gross or interesting fact depending on your perspective: Kraft singles actually are made from real cheese. They buy up old cheddar blocks en masse, and pay college students to go through it, trimming off the mold and hardened bits, heaving the remaining good bits into a bin where it's processed into Kraft singles. Yes, this is first-hand experience from that job.

Sounds like my 4th grade teacher's experience with peach processing.  He said that he had a job sorting them as they passed on a conveyor belt. The moldy ones were tossed into bins and used for marmalade.

Cheese toast--a slice of Kraft cheese on some decent bread, in the oven until the cheese just barely darkens--is a memory from my childhood.

And then I discovered how to make Welsh rarebit, and my life was forever changed. My god, was my life changed.

I'm pretty sure my long-dead grandmother was making this in Yorkshire in the 1920s, well before the 1958 creation date alleged in the article.
