Dan Marino, huh? Pittsburgh guy, and I was told a story how the Steelers tried to lure him away from the Dolphins but Miami offered him more money. Maybe Dan would have won a Super Bowl if he would have went to Pittsburgh.

I actually got to see Marino play in the Kingdome in Seattle. Back in the dark days of the Seahawks, who lost terribly, of course. Marino lit 'em up like he was playing in the back yard with some kids.

/Man, the Kingdome was a dump.

I hope someone gets him some nice Isotoner gloves.

I think the Jets passed on him because of questionable character

Charles of York: I think the Jets passed on him because of questionable character

He had too much character for them?

So, he should be celebrated?  If I remember right, he made Darius Rucker cry.

Obviously the Jets knew something about him that the people up here didn't...

I remember the announcers always talking about how he had this quick release that was so much more than other QB's, but never saw it.  Recently I found a Youtube of a game he played in the 80's and holy crap.  Less than a half second after the snap and that ball was headed downrange like a mortar shell.

The 30 for 30 that ESPN did on Elway to Marino covered this pretty well.  Marino's numbers dropped off his senior year.  O'Brien went 8-7 vs Marino over the years they played.  Zero rings between them.

That's....not how the NFL draft works

Oh, unless you meant later in his career. In which case... maybe that happened I can't remember

I heard the Dolphins were behind some of those rumors.

That 30 for 30 was great from beginning to end. One of my favorites.

This was a few years after he was drafted. Forgot to put that part.

All true, but the Seahawks denied Marino his best shot at The Owl.

I know Marino gets a lot of stick for never winning the big game, but I don't think I could live with myself and root for John Elway. It was a great ride. As much as the Dolphins tend to suck, they're almost always interesting to watch.

There were a lot of "holy shiat, THAT guy!" moments.  There were some names I went back and rooted through my mid-80s Topps cards looking for.

Tony Hunter with the Rams
James Jones as a Seahawk
Lots of Leonard Smith with the Cardinals and the Bills

We'll always have this.

Meh, the Dolphins' defense wasn't anywhere near as good at the end of his career than it was in the beginning (The Killer B's).  Plus, Marino wasn't as mobile as Elway, he could just put that ball anywhere on the field he wanted, NOW.

The KC Chiefs chose Todd Blackledge instead of Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, or any of the other QBs not named Elway.

He sure would have been better than Neil O'Dumbass.

Zero defense too.

The Chiefs weren't particularly great during Blackledge's run as starting QB and they were much better when the backup QB, Bill Kenney, was in charge of the offense. And even when Kenney was putting up 300+ yard passing games, the Chiefs still lost them.

Not saying they would have beaten the Bears in the super bowl if Marino was there but....

Well, seeing as the only team the Bears didn't beat that year was Marino's Dolphins...

Team on the Bears' schedule, that is.

Learn what you speak of subby. Hazing gone bad his junior year left the team in shambles. He admitted next year it was bothering him and performance suffered. Plus rumours of drug use to the point that his team tested him.

Those things were a bigger deal back then. Lots of GMs passed but haha Jets.

I was going to say Tom Brady, but that happened later.
