According to CalMatters, Larry Elder got 43.4% of the vote on Question 2, which trounced everyone else, but doesn't matter when 67.1% voted no on Question 1.

Also, it looks like 47.3% of voters left Question 2 blank.

Maybe there was election fraud. I find it hard to believe that 33% of Californians are death cultists. But I've never been there myself, so.

The rural parts of the state tend to be just as red as any red state, especially the far north and the Central Valley.

In fact, if you drive down any major highway in the Central Valley, you'll likely see several "Congress created dust bowl" signs, arguing that the California drought is a hoax intended to put hardworking farmers out of business so that they'll have to go on welfare and become Democrats.

He actually claimed, yesterday, before anything had been counted _or any statistics published_, that a "statistical analysis" had "proven fraud."

Provable lies (and that was really obviously provable) of that magnitude that represent a direct attack on the foundation of Democracy itself should be a capital offense.

Yep.  Newsom is up for re-election next year, which would have meant that come spring in a few months, the CA GOP could have gone on the offense.  Newsom is not reviled across the board the way Grey Davis was, but he's no Jerry Brown, either.  He could have been vulnerable to the right attack.  Maybe not successful, since most CAs are Dems, but still.  The right GOP candidate could have been a contender.

Now what?  This recall was a lopsided victory for Newsom.  The CA GOP have practically handed him next year's campaign commercials.  They're now identified as a Trump party because of their embrace of that chucklehead Elder, instead of someone more mainstream CA GOP like Faulconer.  In a diverse state like CA, why would they do something like that?

Enigmamf: There is at least some basis to their claims - they argue that less water should be set aside for wildlife / fish preservation in the delta. In dry years currently, environmental uses (species protection and salinity standards) are allocated about 60% of delta inflows.

Arguments like that are typically made by conservidumbs in the south valley. The southern Central Valley doesn't even empty into the ocean most years -- there is NO water available to save and store in the southern valley.

Also the notion that salinity issues are an "environmental use" is misguided. The SF Bay estuary's existence provides a nursery for many commercially fished species. Cut the water flows and the fisheries will die.  Also the bay will die and stink up the air of a major population center.

In any case, the water belongs to everyone -- not just some get-rich-quick farmers who feel entitled to a natural resource they have no water rights for. It's not just for them to decide how it should be used.

The governator was elected by recall in 2003.  This time he's remained rigidly neutral endorsing neither side. He's pointed out the issues that led to the attempt but flat out refuses to claim the governor cannot handle them or say someone else can do it better.

Also, on one of the main issues, COVID response, he has been very vocal in saying across all media platforms that refusing to follow federal guidelines "makes you a schmuck" and "screw your freedoms" when it comes to masks and vaccines. He trusts experts and expects everyone else to do so as well.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oRdP3SYjgM will take you to him saying those things but google him and "COVID" and there is tons of content using those words.

Your state needs to divide itself into three states, one centered around SF, one centered around LA, and one centered around SD.

That way 12 percent of the population ends up with at least 12% of the senators, instead of 4% like right now.

But that's not the plan the conservaturds keep pushing. They want to keep the 3 cities in one state. Then create 2 new red states with all the other areas. Like they did years ago by creating South Dakota to create a new red state.

There is at least some basis to their claims - they argue that less water should be set aside for wildlife / fish preservation in the delta. In dry years currently, environmental uses (species protection and salinity standards) are allocated about 60% of delta inflows.

As a Central Valley resident, I'd like to point out that Congress appropriated the money for the Central Valley Project, and the Army Corps dams that time releases with the growing seasons, and the Bureau of Reclamation projects, and the levees, and a lot of infrastructure to move water south where it's sold to the contractors at below market rates.

If Congress also says we have to keep the Delta alive, that's their prerogative.

/Full scale pumping during drought would kill the Delta farmers which rely on a fresh-water Delta
//And the commercial fishing industry

Newsom won pretty much by the statistical percentages of the ideological divide in the country. It was the 30% of Trumper sycophants who voted for Elder. Just shows that the majority of Californians did not support the recall effort, and it was just political theater by the right to try to muck up the system. The only reason Elder is not breaking out the "vote was rigged" narrative is his loss was too big, and he would undermine his career as a huckster. It also would undermine the whole claims of rigged election strategy as merely Chicken Little syndrome for other contests.

The tactic to undermine society through claims of voter fraud in other elections would be hurt if Elder continued with his claims. Some GOP donors probably met with Elder and explained the situation to him with greenbacks.

Enigmamf: I don't think the strategy was actually "undermine the legitimacy" of the winner. I think if that were the goal, they would have said "pick any democrat" or something like that, to lower the vote percentage of whoever wins.

I think the goal was simply to overcome the risk of the paralysis of choice. It is a well-recognized phenomenon that the more options a person has, the more likely they are to do nothing at all. By saying "Leave part 2 blank", that problem is circumvented - and I bet that helped with Democratic turnout, and helped to win the only question that actually matters.

I'll buy that. High-risk, high-reward gamble made at the time when the recall was deemed an exercise for crankery and shiatfarkery.

ExYank: Your analysis is sound but misses some important considerations. When Davis was recalled, the Democrats promoted a backup as you suggest. What happened was this made it reasonable to vote to recall if you liked the backup guy. Thus the recall succeeded and Arnold won in the clown car race.

Politics is hard. California politics is blood sport at the nicest of times.

And that. Davis ("Voters no likey because they hadn't figured out that the power failures were more due to Enron's farkery than CALISO's attempts to deal with it") and Lt. Gov. Bustamante ("Literally who?") vs The Governator ("Hey, everyone knows who he is and he's not completely insane") led to the Governator winning.

Perhaps Newsom was fighting the last war. But better. In the sense that Newsom ("Voters meh about him") and Leave It Blank vs Larry ("Literally Who Unless You Listen To Talk Radio") Elder had better odds than Davis did. (And in the sense that Republicans blindly presumed that enough people weren't paying attention and Elder would take the plurality of the votes in the event that the first question passed.) A low-risk, high-reward strategy on the part of the California Republicans. Didn't work, but didn't really cost them anything.

Weird; our one state is 12% of the United States population, and Caitlin Jenner probably came in like fifth place.

Your state needs to divide itself into three states, one centered around SF, one centered around LA, and one centered around SD.

That way 12 percent of the population ends up with at least 12% of the senators, instead of 4% like right now.

Jokes aside, the divisions you're referring have a long history. When the FCC carved up the nation into broadcast regions, it perhaps inadvertently created media markets. When baseball teams came along, they divided those media markets so that in most markets, only one team had exclusive access to broadcast their games. When cable TV came along those rules were blurred, but generally enforced with blackout rules.

As a result, the most popular MLB team in each county is almost always the team with exclusive broadcast rights in that market - and the popularity is caused by the media markets, not the other way around.

And I'm sorry to say, that metric places SLO in so-cal territory. (Though you might get a misleading impression in the city, where a lot of bay-area kids live to attend college)

This map puts the dividing line for fans right in the middle of SLO county.  Probably pretty true since the city is halfway between LA and SF.  I am skeptical of it though because it shows some weird area where there are Angel fans, but I've never seen one in real life, ever.

For example: Santa Barbara is clearly SoCal, and it's obviously full of Dodgers fans.  Just up the road in San Luis Obispo, however, they think of themselves as part of NorCal, and everyone there roots for the Giants.  Similarly, in Fresno they're Giants fans, and Fresno is deemed NorCal, but the next shiathole to the South, Bakersfield, is clearly SoCal and so everyone there is a Dodgers fan.

This is a universal truth, there's no denying it.

(There also happens to be a similar line somewhere in Oregon, a little north of Eugene, where everyone to the south roots for the Giants and everyone to the north roots for the Mariners, but that's a different topic because we're talking about California here.)

The entire central valley outside of like Sacramento is a depressing shiat show. Drive on 5 between the Bay and LA and you get to see it for yourself. Awful drive and all the towns are hick central.

I refuse to make that drive on the 5 anymore.  The majority of it is only 2 lanes in each direction, which just results in one long 70 mph fluid traffic jam in the left lane.  A third lane should have been added 20 years ago but we don't spend much on infrastructure these days.

jvl: Enigmamf: There is at least some basis to their claims - they argue that less water should be set aside for wildlife / fish preservation in the delta.

The San Joaquin flows into the delta, so I'm not sure what you're thinking of? Unless you mean the SOUTH south, i.e.. the Kern River. I made sure to stop and see that in 2017 - it's an impressive river in wet years.

Fark user imageView Full Size

I think they're referring to the maximum 5000cfs backwards flow on the old and middle river, which is most severely limits how much water from the Sacramento river system can be pumped out of Clifton Court / Jones pumping stations.

Also the notion that salinity issues are an "environmental use" is misguided. The SF Bay estuary's existence provides a nursery for many commercially fished species. Cut the water flows and the fisheries will die.  Also the bay will die and stink up the air of a major population center.

Yeah, more balanced arguments tend to call it "fish vs. farms". The reason for the 5000cfs limit mentioned above is to "[r]educe the vulnerability of emigrating juvenile winter-run, yearling spring-run, and CV steelhead within the lower Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers to entrainment into the channels of the South Delta and at the pumps due to the diversion of water by the export facilities in the South Delta". But because it is benefitting wild fish (as opposed to farmed fish), I don't think 'environmental' is inaccurate.

I do object to calling salinity management 'environmental' because maintaining salinity is necessary for the delta to function as a conveyance for human benefit - if back-pressure sucks saltwater into the delta, you stop getting fresh water out of the pumps. It also benefits the intra-delta farmers who rely on that water being fresh for their own use. The natural state of the delta is far more saline (variable with the seasons) than we maintain it now, so if anything keeping salinity low is altering the environment, rather than preserving it. Maybe call it 'functional' or 'operational' use.

You would like to throw out the First Amendment and make lying a crime. Did I understand that correctly? When Trump was in charge of the executive and directing the FBI and US Attorneys, you would have liked it if he would have determined who was lying and charge them with felonies.

Lying under oath is a crime.  Lying to a police officer is as well.  As is lying on your taxes or any federal, state, or local government paperwork.  Lying to damage a person's business or reputation is covered under civil law, allowing for extensive damages to be recovered.  There are dozens of laws in most states covering falsely reporting crimes, manufacturing evidence, etc.  These are all considered to be reasonable and upheld limits on the 1st Amendment.

Making it a crime to claim election fraud without evidence isn't a leap.  It doesn't qualify legally as sedition, obviously.  That's pretty well-defined territory under federal law.  But you are accusing a group of a crime - publicly - without evidence or even a reasonable suspicion.  And there are pretty far reaching consequences to the public when it's allowed to occur unchecked.

The LA Times recommended Faulconer.  Specifically, vote NO on question one ("Shall we recall the current guy?"), and Faulconer on question 2 ("If the recall succeeds, who should be Governor?")..

The looked at all the candidates, discarded the ones who were obviously unqualified or not serious, and compared the remaining candidates' experience and their (for lack of better summary word)  "sanity."

They said it was not a difficult choice.  Faulconer ws the ONLY candidate on the ballot who had any relevant experience and wasn't a total covidiot or seditionist.  So despite their reservations for endorsing a Republican, they had no choice but to recommend NO voters check the box for the former San Diego mayor so that in the event YES succeeded, we didn't get a clown like Elder.

Thank you California, my home of over 30 years, for restoring what little faith I had in this species. I trusted you to look at what Florida and Texas have become, especially during this pandemic, and ask yourself "Do we want this shat?", and tell the world "F'K NO WE DON'T!".

California isn't perfect but there are many things they can point to with pride, like their system of higher education. They are the only state that has tuition-free community college with no restrictions other than academics and time (first 2 years are free). No special programs, no restricted majors, no income requirements, no FAFSA paperwork unless you want a Pell grant or other assistance for books.

California state universities also STILL have the lowest in-state tuition and fees of any public state system at $6,785 per year. Not per semester, per year. That's where the taxes conservatives piss and whine about go. F'k them. It's a damn good investment. It's also why California state universities have to turn hundreds of thousands of people away every year that apply, because there just isn't room for all that want to come. Combine that with $0 tuition community college and that's a Bachelors for less than $14K in-state.

Though I'm in another state now (employer made an offer I couldn't pass up), I look forward to returning when I retire. Good for you, Cali.

According to CalMatters, Larry Elder got 43.4% of the vote on Question 2, which trounced everyone else, but doesn't matter when 67.1% voted no on Question 1.

Also, it looks like 47.3% of voters left Question 2 blank.

I thought leaving it blank meant that they wanted Newsom anyway? Or am I not remembering the Calvinball rules of California recalls correctly?

Leaving it blank was an option, but only if you voted no on the recall.

Which makes me wonder how many GQP voters voted yes on the recall but failed to select a candidate.

I'm looking at the ballot right now and this is not true.  It states "The recall question contains two parts.  You may vote on both parts or on just one.  Either way, your vote will be counted".

Or did you mean just on the state level? Like, you think Alabama's elected officials should be able to determine who is lying and charge them with a felony. I refuse to make that drive on the 5 anymore.  The majority of it is only 2 lanes in each direction, which just results in one long 70 mph fluid traffic jam in the left lane.  A third lane freakin' trainshould have been added 20 years ago but we don't spend much on infrastructure these days.

Question 2:    5,057,345 votes cast

Votes that did not answer Question 2:    4,080,083

California needs to change how their recall law works.  Just having more votes for Question 2 should not be the way to award a winner.  A No vote for Question 1 is essentially a vote for the current governor.  If there is a larger amount of yes votes, then move to question 2.  If the leading candidate for question 2 has less votes then No votes, governor stays.  If the leading candidate has more votes than the NO vote, they win.

Or California can just have a recall election where the recalled governor is replaced with the lt governor, and anyone can run when the next election cycle happens.

Looks like most Democratic voters didn't pick a Plan B. Good thing the recall failed

They were explicitly told not to pick a candidate. It avoided a Clinton/Sanders-like fight that would muddy the recall.

Which is stupid... I mean, had it been close, Elder was not getting all of the GOP vote, if you could consolidate the dem vote, that would be the point.... even if half of the "no".s would have voted for Paffrath, that would have easily beaten Elder.

I mean, it turned out that (A) at 63-36, Newsom was actually never likely in serious trouble, and (B) with 1% and 55k votes, Jenner was a side show that shouldn't have gotten 10% of the attention they got.

It would have been a pissing match and set up yet another moderate vs progressive fight to divide the base which would have split the vote and Elder may have won anyway, but overall would have weakened Dems going into the gubernatorial election next year.

Given that I think they knew (internal metrics that were even better than the public polls) it wasn't REALLY going to be very close, as it wasn't, then I agree with that assessment.

If there was any indication that "Yes" HAD a very good chance of actually narrowly winning, then IMO you did have to have a backup plan to float a single D candidate to the top of the "replace with" vote.... that is my only point.

Yes, it may have been messy down the road, but, you at least weren't handing it over to Trump toady Larry Elder in the meantime.

I went back and read what you wrote: "Leaving it blank was an option, but only if you voted no on the recall."

It does not matter whether you votes yes or no on the recall, you could still leave the 2nd part blank.

Again the ballot itself stated: "The recall question contains two parts.  You may vote on both parts or on just one.  Either way, your vote will be counted".

If you voted "yes" for the recall, but left the second part blank, it meant that you wanted Newsom recalled but didn't want him replaced by anyone. Since there was a field of some 43 Republican candidates to choose from, not picking someone is either a pretty damning statement against all of them, or means that all those Republicans can't read.

You would like to throw out the First Amendment and make lying a crime. Did I understand that correctly? When Trump was in charge of the executive and directing the FBI and US Attorneys, you would have liked it if he would have determined who was lying and charge them with felonies.

Or did you mean just on the state level? Like, you think Alabama's elected officials should be able to determine who is lying and charge them with a felony. You know Juries decide what the facts of the case are, right? So you're okay with an Alabama jury deciding whether or not someone is lying about covid's existence.

I see no flaw in this plan. It's a shame this country has no history with a 'Sedition Act' that does something similar so you could just read about how that kind of thing would work out.

The first amendment is over 200 years out of date and needs retooling to handle modern fascism

There is at least some basis to their claims - they argue that less water should be set aside for wildlife / fish preservation in the delta. In dry years currently, environmental uses (species protection and salinity standards) are allocated about 60% of delta inflows.

The media needs to make clear that "Noone" was the leading answer to #2 because Dems were instructed to leave that question blank.

That is stupid. Because some poll worker could fill in a box on a blank ballot.

There is at least some basis to their claims - they argue that less water should be set aside for wildlife / fish preservation in the delta. In dry years currently, environmental uses (species protection and salinity standards) are allocated about 60% of delta inflows.

The long term view should face the reality that climate change makes farming as it exists in California today, temporary, but destroying the delta's ecology is permanent.

Frankly, that sounds awesome. Who wouldn't want to do that? Please say you were watching things like Dracula, or Frankenstein, or Night of the Living Dead.

Yeah, a graveyard (bone chillingly) screams out for Night of the Living Dead!

There was a time when I might have cared to point out that there are 5, but, well, Oakland... never mind.

That's actually not true at all - it doesn't matter a whit who paid for the projects. The EPA oversees the rule-making process that determines what water can be used, and their rulings carry every bit as much force over state and local projects as federal projects.

And that doesn't address my point at all: It is a decision to use the amount of water we use. I think it's generally good science, but it is a decision we have made. The farmers with their highway propaganda are arguing against that decision - not "arguing that the California drought is a hoax" as was claimed above.

The entire central valley outside of like Sacramento is a depressing shiat show. Drive on 5 between the Bay and LA and you get to see it for yourself. Awful drive and all the towns are hick central.

If you want to see a real shiat show, drive down the 99 from Sacramento to Bakersfield. Yes, I live in a blue state, yet I am surrounded and outnumbered by MAGAT pieces of shiat.

You're suggesting someone should go TO Bakersfield? Boy, you must have a lot of hate in your heart to wish that on a person.

To be fair, they said to go there from Sacramento.  That's just trading one hellhole for another.

dark brew: Cyberluddite: For example: Santa Barbara is clearly SoCal, and it's obviously full of Dodgers fans.  Just up the road in San Luis Obispo, however, they think of themselves as part of NorCal, and everyone there roots for the Giants.

This map puts the dividing line for fans right in the middle of SLO county.  Probably pretty true since the city is halfway between LA and SF.  I am skeptical of it though because it shows some weird area where there are Angel fans, but I've never seen one in real life, ever.

[Fark user image 850x566]

I've placed a star where SLO is. That roughly horizontal line above it is the county border. So your map also places pretty much all of San Luis Obispo county is Dodger territory, which makes sense since it's in the Santa Barbara media market, and all its stations broadcast from either Santa Barbara or Santa Maria.

Cyberluddite: johnny_vegas: TwowheelinTim: Northern CA starts at the Sonoma line

Reasonably you should be right, but most Californians don't feel that way

There is a simple test to determine whether (culturally at least) an area is considered Northern or Southern California, and that's this: Are most people in the area Giants fans, or Dodgers fans?  For the areas that are in the Central part of the state, the answer to that question invariably determines which side of the NorCal/SoCal divide it falls on.
