Bovine Diarrhea Virus: Sanguine Dawn: I know a guy who did phone-banking for Newsom. And he farking hates Newsom. That should tell you just how toxic Larry Elder was to Californians.

Why is there such hatred of Newsom (aside from the blind hate from Trumpers. I get that)?  He seems like he's doing a good job in California.

blind hate and impotent rage

Great. Now fix the recall law so someone can't become governor with 20% of the vote.

According to CalMatters, Larry Elder got 43.4% of the vote on Question 2, which trounced everyone else, but doesn't matter when 67.1% voted no on Question 1.

Also, it looks like 47.3% of voters left Question 2 blank.

Dangerous. Some MAGAt poll worker could fill in boxes.

Doesn't matter if Question One is marked No.
Question Two is moot at that point.

2021-09-15 8:08:43 AM
Question 2 was depressing, I know some of it is because there was some amount of pressure to make it a joke, but reading through policy statements was depressing as hell, even some of the better candidates had at least one area that they had just some batshiat ideas, and it was obvious they were very passionate about it too and a lot of the other maybe ok ideas were just filler.

kdawg7736: California is a very blue state. There wasn't a chance he was going to be recalled, pandemic or no.

And 20 years ago it was a blue state too but they still voted to recall Davis and put in Schwarzenegger. Never underestimate the stupidity of the voter whether blue or red. Glad to see California has regained their senses.

A functioning political party would be having meetings this morning to figure out why anyone thought this was a good idea, but they're going with a stolen election. Stolen by the people with a 2 to 1 registration advantage.

yohohogreengiant: Quick and Dirty: Well, geez. I'm not even a big fan of "Cali" and I'm super mad at the person who came up with the word "Cali" -- spent a lot of years there -- lived a couple of years in L.A. and it's a whole different ecosystem.

I have a story about ripping apart a rotisserie chicken at a picnic in a graveyard, while watching classic movies being screened on the wall of a mausoleum -- everyone there was horrified, but they still ate the chicken -- even the guy with the weepy eye.

Like I said: It's an entire different world over there, so I'm not sure what I was expecting from you Californians, but on the whole I'm proud of you. Good job.

Thank you California, my home of over 30 years, for restoring what little faith I had in this species. I trusted you to look at what Florida and Texas have become, especially during this pandemic, and ask yourself "Do we want this shat?", and tell the world "F'K NO WE DON'T!".

California isn't perfect but there are many things they can point to with pride, like their system of higher education. They are the only state that has tuition-free community college with no restrictions other than academics and time (first 2 years are free). No special programs, no restricted majors, no income requirements, no FAFSA paperwork unless you want a Pell grant or other assistance for books.

California state universities also STILL have the lowest in-state tuition and fees of any public state system at $6,785 per year. Not per semester, per year. That's where the taxes conservatives piss and whine about go. F'k them. It's a damn good investment. It's also why California state universities have to turn hundreds of thousands of people away every year that apply, because there just isn't room for all that want to come. Combine that with $0 tuition community college and that's a Bachelors for less than $14K in-state.

Though I'm in another state now (employer made an offer I couldn't pass up), I look forward to returning when I retire. Good for you, Cali.

Probably a false flag event.  Elder is a crisis actor, there was no attack.  The video was doctored and its all a conspiracy by the fake media!

jvl: kelderiv: Claiming election fraud with no evidence needs to be a felony. I'd be ok with it also being considered sedition. There needs to be consequences for lying. Big ones.

You would like to throw out the First Amendment and make lying a crime. Did I understand that correctly? When Trump was in charge of the executive and directing the FBI and US Attorneys, you would have liked it if he would have determined who was lying and charge them with felonies.

Lying under oath is a crime.  Lying to a police officer is as well.  As is lying on your taxes or any federal, state, or local government paperwork.  Lying to damage a person's business or reputation is covered under civil law, allowing for extensive damages to be recovered.  There are dozens of laws in most states covering falsely reporting crimes, manufacturing evidence, etc.  These are all considered to be reasonable and upheld limits on the 1st Amendment.

Making it a crime to claim election fraud without evidence isn't a leap.  It doesn't qualify legally as sedition, obviously.  That's pretty well-defined territory under federal law.  But you are accusing a group of a crime - publicly - without evidence or even a reasonable suspicion.  And there are pretty far reaching consequences to the public when it's allowed to occur unchecked.

Which is stupid... I mean, had it been close, Elder was not getting all of the GOP vote, if you could consolidate the dem vote, that would be the point.... even if half of the "no".s would have voted for Paffrath, that would have easily beaten Elder.

I mean, it turned out that (A) at 63-36, Newsom was actually never likely in serious trouble, and (B) with 1% and 55k votes, Jenner was a side show that shouldn't have gotten 10% of the attention they got.

[Fark user image 425x510]

Newsom actually is getting a mandate with this recall vote.  Californians approve of the way he's handling the pandemic, businesses are opening back up. Hollywood's up and running and you can pretty much go anywhere you damn well please.  People are sick and tired of the plague rats getting in the way of returning everything back to normal and it shows.

If Elder thinks he'll do better next year he's going to find out that Newsom ate his lunch for the next four years.

Anyone running on an anti-vaxx vote is going to be the death of their candidacy.  Republicans better think of an alternative...and fast.

It would have been a pissing match and set up yet another moderate vs progressive fight to divide the base which would have split the vote and Elder may have won anyway, but overall would have weakened Dems going into the gubernatorial election next year.

Given that I think they knew (internal metrics that were even better than the public polls) it wasn't REALLY going to be very close, as it wasn't, then I agree with that assessment.

If there was any indication that "Yes" HAD a very good chance of actually narrowly winning, then IMO you did have to have a backup plan to float a single D candidate to the top of the "replace with" vote.... that is my only point.

Yes, it may have been messy down the road, but, you at least weren't handing it over to Trump toady Larry Elder in the meantime.

2021-09-15 11:45:13 AM
As of 11:00 EST:   9,137,428 votes cast.

Question 1:    Yes to recall: 3,297,145
                 No to recall: 5,840,283

Question 2:    5,057,345 votes cast
                 Elder received:                                        2,373,551
Votes that did not answer Question 2:    4,080,083

California needs to change how their recall law works.  Just having more votes for Question 2 should not be the way to award a winner.  A No vote for Question 1 is essentially a vote for the current governor.  If there is a larger amount of yes votes, then move to question 2.  If the leading candidate for question 2 has less votes then No votes, governor stays.  If the leading candidate has more votes than the NO vote, they win.

Or California can just have a recall election where the recalled governor is replaced with the lt governor, and anyone can run when the next election cycle happens.

Maybe there was election fraud. I find it hard to believe that 33% of Californians are death cultists. But I've never been there myself, so.

The entire central valley outside of like Sacramento is a depressing shiat show. Drive on 5 between the Bay and LA and you get to see it for yourself. Awful drive and all the towns are hick central.

I refuse to make that drive on the 5 anymore.  The majority of it is only 2 lanes in each direction, which just results in one long 70 mph fluid traffic jam in the left lane.  A third lane freakin' trainshould have been added 20 years ago but we don't spend much on infrastructure these days.

I remember that recall, I voted for the Gray Davis recall and Schwarzeneggar in as Gov. I remember even then, the local AM radio chuckleheads (John and Ken on 640) that were vocal about the recall, and had Schwarzeneggar on air many times, eventually turned on him and called him a RINO.

Much has changed in my worldview and politics, having kids required challenging my beliefs and biases and this allowed me to recognize this latest recall as a threat to their well-being.
