"I quickly developed a cult following. That sounds pretty good, but the truth is it's the last thing you want to develop. The only time having a cult following is a great thing is when you are actually in a cult. Then you get be a cult leader and life is milk and honey... everyone thinks you are God... you get to lie down with all the ladies from the cult... In a short matter of time, you become drunk with power and begin to lie down with the men also, not because you want to, but just because you can. Yes, being a cult leader with a cult following is fine work if you can find it. However, being a stand-up comedian with a cult following just means that most folks hate your guts."

He really was on the best improve comedians that ever lived.

2021-09-14 3:42:12 PM
Jay Mohr told this great story on his podcast....when he was a cast member on SNL, every Monday or whatever was "Pitch Day", where the writers/cast/crew met that week's guest, and would pitch them sketch ideas.  Lorne would roll through each writer, "thanks Jim, you're turn, Sue."  Norm had this thing where, if he had no ideas - which was often - he'd do this long, rambling shaggy dog story.  The writers/cast had heard it so many times, the moment they heard him start, there'd be groans / sighs / shaking of heads, etc.,

Bob Newhart is the guest.  It's Norm's turn to pitch.  "Norm, do you have anything for Mr. Newhart?"

"Oh yeah, yeah yeah yeah.  OK, so, there's this guy, right?  And, ok, he's a Vietnam veteran, ok?  And he's watering his lawn, ok?  And the paperboy, he's about 12 yrs old, comes by, and....."

*collective groans, eyerolls*

And Norm goes for it.  A solid 3-4 minutes of Shaggy Dog story.  Newhart just stares at him.  Usually, 1-2 minutes in, the guest interrupts Norm:  "Norm, uh, I don't see the comedy, where's this going?"  Not Newhart.  Norm digs in, keeps going, Newhart is a cigar store Indian.   Now it's a battle of wills.  Newhart just staring at Norm while he keeps and keeps and keeps going.  Norm senses the room has turned on him, 6-7 minutes in, and sheepishly stops.

"Ah, ah, oh my god, Mr. Newhart...I .....I......I don't really have anything."

"I know that, Norm.   I just wanted to see how long we could go!"  Newhart erupts into laughter, thus giving the entire room permission to laugh.  Mohr said everyone was just dying with laughter."Someone finally broke Norm!"

And if anyone is a big fan of Norm and missed it, the sitcom he did (I think just called the Norm MacDonald show) is something you would probably enjoy. Was right after he left SNL.

I would have missed this news until much later but someone I know who works (well, worked now that Norm's passed) in the same circles posted about it. The 9 year cancer battle is what gets me. I never heard a thing about it and I asked a few others & they had no idea either. He & Chadwick were running the same playbook on that it seems.

I guess we know who's got the main spot on Saturday's stand up show in "the great beyond" this week.

2021-09-14 3:49:07 PM
Norm was a pretty interesting comedian, especially in the last 20 years.     He could have certainly went off into directions like Joe Rogan or Dennis Miller have gone over the past 2 decades (to quote farker onomatopoetic about funny conservatives: "Dennis Miller is an interesting test case. He got considerably less funny when he went right wing. It's like the terrorists flew a plane into his sense of humor."), and he certainly had some public issues with positions he took (https://www.vox.com/culture/2018/9/12/17850248/norm-macdonald-hollywood-reporter-metoo-donald-trump-roseanne-barr-louis-ck), but IMO he never let whatever he might have been feeling politically be his "act" or "bit", even when he did his talk show on Netflix (I think probably the last major thing he did).

IMO, if you haven't watched his talk show on Netflix, go watch his Judge Judy interview... probably one of the most interesting interviews all around you'll have seen in awhile.

In Howard Sterns heyday, when he was still uber relevant and comedians and rock stars clammored to get on his show for exposure, not just nostalgia like now, Norm was the only comedian who had the balls to call Stern out. He blamed Stern and his staff for that one drunk whack packer who died, cause they egged on his drinking. As a huge fan of Stern, still to this day, that impressed me.

My favorite Norm bit was always the Fantastic Four bit. I'll have to look it up tonight in his honor.

Ive ried to explain the book to people, how it is and is not a real memoir, but I cant even really do that. Its so weirdly structured and well written with moments of real poetry.

That book is real literature, not just some dumb comedy tell all.

Had a whole bit like "you know how you sometimes go to your favorite bar and there's a new bartender all the sudden? Well that's me." The first break in "my" SNL cast as I had just become a fan.

And if anyone is a big fan of Norm and missed it, the sitcom he did (I think just called the Norm MacDonald show) is something you would probably enjoy. Was right after he left SNL.

Man that transition to Colin Quinn was *rough*

It is only Tuesday, and they might have even had a heads up, so, I'm expecting an all-star Norm episode of SNL this weekend (instead of whatever rerun was likely already in the slot), probably just float back and forth between Celeb Jeopardy's and Weekend Update segments... in anycase, should be good.

Also it is unfortunate that Conan doesn't have a show currently to remember his good friend on this week.

heard about this a couple hours ago.  I'm gutted about it. He was my favorite living comedian.

im sure others have already said it, but his relationship with letterman (and other late night hosts) was second to none and must see TV.

his delivery of long winded jokes was amazing.

the mischievous looks he would get when telling jokes, just wonderful.

Grateful that we have youtube so I can relive his stuff in perpetuity.

AuralArgument: That would have been an awesome closing sketch. You know where the weird and experiments go

true.  believe Wayne's World and Sprockets were both birthed in the closing sketch.

but OTOH, Lorne haaaaaaaaaaaaaates when people go off script, so it wouldn't have worked in all likelihood.  free forming it, that is.

but yeah, the best part of Jay telling that story is he does a killer Norm impression.  and a pretty good imitation of Newhart's stammer (which I should have approximated but whatever).  great story.

That's what got him fired from SNL. The network bigwigs were friends of OJ Simpson's, and they didn't like MacDonald shiatting on him during Weekend Update. That just made Norm double down, especially after the verdict.

Maybe don't be friends with wife beaters and murderers. Just a thought.

Another reason why Lorne Michaels is a walking pile of shiat.

I don't disagree that Lorne Michaels is an asshole, but I think in this instance, he wasn't the primary asshole. That honor goes to Brandon Tartikoff, who I'm pretty sure was the head of NBC at the time.

Don Ohlmeyer, not Tartikoff.

I first saw a clip of Norm's standup way back in 88-89 on MTV's (sorely missed) half-hour-comedy-hour.  The joke I remember to this day was Norm plainly talking about finding the cutest puppy in the shelter available for adoption, filling out the papers and just as he walks out the door asks the shelter operator, "these are good for eating, right?"

We'll miss you Turd Ferguson.

The Miller years were mostly good, but (some of) the years Nealon and Norm did Weekend Update SNL was so bad it almost got cancelled. Not because of Weekend Update, that was usually the highlight. But those years were baaaaad. If you have Peacock go and watch for yourself, all of those seasons are on there

Really the "golden years" of SNL for most people are whenever it was on when they were 13-18

Don't get me started on the 1st 5 years either

Also, it's sad Norm died too

I recommend looking up a reasonably recent SNL skit "Real Women of SNL"
Cheri is in fine form, as are many female SNL alumni.

For a lot of people the golden years were the first 5 years of SNL. It's when I was watching it live. Well, tape delayed, since I was on the west coast. Going back now and re-watching many of the shows, they did not age well. In fact, some were painfully bad. Luckily, even with questionable material, you could see the talent that was going to shine after many of the actors moved on after SNL.
The early years still have a lot of great memories for me, watching something totally new on late night television.

You can tell from his guest visits that Norm and Conan were close, much like Conan was with Shandling too.. obviously their families are top of the list, but, in some ways I think Conan has really went through a lot losing two comedic giants in his own personal life in a pretty short span.

I do wonder if there was some sort of falling out between Norm and Conan. He was never on Conan's podcast even though that seemed like a slam dunk, and he hadn't been on Conan's TV show since 2016. Frankly, Norm did go at least a little bit Dennis Miller in his final years, wonder if that had anything to do with it if there was a falling out

Slight edit

There were oddities...  he never drove.  Stories of him losing his phone, unreachable, skipping interviews because he slept through things.

He told a joke once on Conan, where Andy was the recipient of the punchline, basically the punchline: 'Andy is gay'.  Reportedly there may have been tension between Norm and Andy at that point, and perhaps why he hadn't been invited back...  it's not a punchline, but one Norm often would go to, bugging the likes of his sidekick Adam Eget, or taunting Artie Lange before a set in San Francisco.  I'm certain a lot of stuff goes off a comedian's back, but Andy also has a gay son, and if the reason for not being invited back is related, standing up for him, well, I get it.

So far as not being on the Conan podcast, who knows.  I don't know of anything he's been on recently.  Maybe cancer treatment took a toll.  He looked a little rough on his coronavirus set he did last April, and the few short interviews he did with others during lockdown.  Conan had mentioned during one podcast in the year that he has a huge respect for Norm's delivery, and don't give a shiat attitude, so surely he has mad respect for him.

Anyway, love so much of what Norm has done.  His book is brilliant.

Some of the videos in that thread are great too. I love the Pistorius bit.

If Andy held a grudge he ain't saying it now. Instead...

Yet ANOTHER Cameo mislabeled as Norm's last video...   I guess this is a thing now.

I'm embedding it up because its got his Mom, even though I know this Youtuber is a lying liar who lies about this being his actual last video.
