"For chrissake. I've rarely seen such a stream of pseudo-analytic bafflegab in service of avoiding the simple and obvious answer. Here's the deal: The recall is solely the work of "Stop the Steal" Trumpistas who took advantage of the fact that California requires only 1.5 million signatures to certify a recall. Even in their current moldering condition Republicans still make up about a third of all voters, so all the nutbags needed was signatures from the 20-30% of their compatriots in the nutbag wing of the party. Easy peasy, especially if you're gathering signatures at the same time that Trump and Fox News are firing up the nation about corrupt Democrats trying to take the presidency away from him."

100% correct.

a far candle: Also, the recall had nothing to do with Covid. It was filed in February 2020.

COVID had everything to do with getting the recall to ballot stage, but you're right that it initially had nothing to do with COVID. The recall petition got an extension because of the pandemic, which allowed for more time to make the numbers threshold. Also, COVID reasons were dogpiled on after the fact.

Yeah, that article is gross:

https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2021-09-14/california-is-impatient-with-patience-newsom-recall-election-tests-states-frustration-point

"Little does it matter that the odds for the recall are long - of past attempts only one has succeeded - or that problems festering for decades often take longer to fix. Hopelessness and resignation challenge the notion of California's exceptionalism and another aged trope.
"Not many states have the word 'dream' associated with them," said Mark Baldassare, president and chief executive of the Public Policy Institute of California. "We have the American dream, but there is something special about the California dream. We are better, we can do better, and we aren't. That's pretty disappointing."
Never mind that the dream seldom matched the reality."

But what's even more gross were the comments. Uggghhhhh

True there was a laundry list of grievances in the filing, but they didn't amass the required support for it until a year later.

The reason I knew the recall was a bunch of crap is that the Republican front runner to take the governor's place was Larry Elder. LARRY FRICKIN' ELDER!

I was pissed off that Newsom went to that gathering at French Laundry. I was open to the idea of replacing him for no other reason than he was clearly Republican level of stupid for doing that. But I didn't vote for Trump due to him being unqualified for the job, Larry Elder is another Trump. I see no reason to think he is qualified to be a state governor and the Republican party did nothing to argue otherwise. Being pissed at Newsom is not the same thing as thinking he's unqualified. So the Republicans essentially forfeited the election.

You'd think they'd have a more charismatic candidate lined up after putting so much thought into this stupid recall in the first place.

Yanno ... I've lived in a reasonably farktonish number of places, both in the country and elsewhere. Including California, north and south. The idea that there's something special about the place, even if it is articulated in this instance by the last people who should be talking about it, isn't absurd in the least.

And that so many people either considered the recall or weren't I guess inspired enough to demonstrate support in the state with the 2:1 Democrat-to-Republican advantage, is more than some Dad's Army of Trumpers. As much as I loathe the LA Times for its union-busting Red-baiting history and its relentlessly pro-corporate agenda even today ... I'ma go with them on this.

Yes, after they had already filed for a recall they found reasons. Notice of intent to recall with a big Feb 21, 2020 stamped on it. But yes, lol, it was all about Covid.

Yes actually IT WAS. They only got the votes because of the covid restrictions. Before that the recall was not getting anywhere. Even the Rs did not care. You know this. They only got the votes because of the covid restrictions. Just a bunch of idiot crybaby conservaturds mad about freedumz pushed the recall through. Open to the idea means they(Republicans) would need to field a viable candidate. Then I'd think about it. They didn't even try. I guess I am kind of stupid for expecting different. This is the Republican party after all. If Trump is their leader then why the hell did I think they'd field a qualified candidate in this election? Larry Elder makes perfect sense for them if I look at it that way.

Just need two simple ingredients:

1) Low bar to initiate a recall

2) Rightwing assholes with no ethics

That's it. That's the recall. When we've entered an era where any loophole is fair game for the Trumpublicans, that's how they'll roll. No mystery or higher meaning to it. A partisan power-grab, because they can.

It was a bad decision, but he acknowledged the lapse in judgment and apologized.

A Republican would have denied wrongdoing or doubled down and flaunted it as an.excercise of his freedoms then blasted the media for trying to cancel him.

This is the most succinct explanation of the excuses they gave. The real reason being that they needed a Republican governor STAT.

100% correct.

He's missing one final piece: a judge giving them a ton of extra time to gather those signatures because of COVID restrictions. COVID restrictions that Republicans don't care about anyway.

Without that extra time they wouldn't have qualified the recall for the ballot in the first place.

Darrell Issa was the major force behind Gray Davis's recall. He bowed out with literal (not the figurative literal, neither) tears in his eyes when Schwarzenegger stepped into the fray and muscled him out. CA GOP has a long history of putrid candidates spearheading shiat like this.

Wait, it only takes 1.5 million votes to initiate this procedure, in a state with a population of 40 million?

For crying out loud, is this another one of those farkass stupid cases (like social security witholding, minimum wage and tax brackets) where they write down a single number that then has to be continually fixed in order to actually be right because the actual determining parameters continuously change? And then in reality this is done about one tenth as often as it should be, if that, mainly because one party are active seditionists out to destroy the American government?

And the original initiator of this recall was John Cox, who lost the 2018 governor's race to Newsom. He thought a recall would get him another bite at the apple.

He's been polling at 2%. Not even other Republicans want him.

Yeah, he's right. (shrug)

Whenever some writer is going on -- at length -- trying to shoehorn some philosophical bullshiat into why people (or the public in general) do something or think something or vote a certain way, I usually nope out pretty quick.

Clearly, at least 30% of Americans don't think. At all. They use the word "think" in reference to their "beliefs," but it's clear that they don't really know what either of those words means. So explaining their "thought process" is a waste of time. It's like explaining why a dog licks its ass using the Socratic method (ie, explaining the ass licking, not the actual ass licking, LOL).

Probably another 30% are just lazy, apathetic assholes who never bother voting for all kinds of reasons (to go by their Facebook or Twitter or Fark musings) but are in reality idiots who never give a shiat about anything unless it obviously and directly affects them, then they never shut the fark up about it. Parsing their "beliefs" is just as useless as with the halfwits described above.

The rest of the voters in California looked at the nutjob the Republicans had on offer and said, "Holy shiat, that asshole shouldn't be anywhere near elected office for any reason."

There you go. My point by point explanation of why California didn't make a mentally disturbed black man their governor.
