Russia is going to go full on Mad Max next round of power shifts. Mad Max with snow and krokodil and armed camps around refineries and natural gas facilities. Until someone actually starves off the oligarchs and their protected cash reserves, they're going to keep kleptocrating until they have to cannibalize their neighboring states before splintering off again under the weight of all the hands looting one another. Or eventually trying something with the EU or China, and more likely they'll push towards Europe than try to scrap with the Chinese.

Russian politics being dominated by old men while all the young and capable reformers are hounded as threats is a tale we've seen before

I expect that without Vladdy at the helm the ship of state will break up and sink.
He hasn't groomed a successor. Like all tyrants he doesn't give a flying fark about what happens after he's gone.
I'd be surprised if it doesn't start with Vlad accidentally falling out a window backward onto a knife.

There's not going to be a post Putin Russia until he dies, he is absolutely the type to have the ear of whoever ends up in charge and to keep his fingers in the pot until even after he retires to some mansion somewhere.

What happens after THAT is anyone's guess.

You just never know with Russia. I'm sure that once Pooty dies or "retires" never to be seen again that things will get pretty spicy over there.

Like those videos of countless shirtless Russians teaming up and punching each other in the fields. Or the slap fights youc an also find on YouTube. Russia seems like a helluva place.

Angry Drunk Bureaucrat: I'm looking at a more Death of Stalin farcical romp.

I wish.

We are well on our way to putting the dark days of Glasnost behind us and can look forward to a future of a Russian adversary that is belligerent everywhere but still can't perform upkeep on their gear.

Oh wait. That's what we have now... Well I guess we can at least stop the pretense that they are reforming.

FTFA: Putin may be getting too old to lead now that he's 69. His likely replacement is a much younger 66 year old.

I don't know that this addresses the issue...

It doesn't, but that hasn't stopped numerous other kleptocrats from trying the exact same thing.  The Saudi royal family is probably the most famous example.

Meatsim1: Russian politics being dominated by old men while all the young and capable reformers are hounded as threats is a tale we've seen before

A decayed empire in thrall to the imagined glories of its past led by a geriatric crew of ideologues who haven't had a new idea in decades?

Yes, indeed. We have seen this.

In the 80s, when it seemed a Soviet premier died once a month, whoever it was would drop out of sight, then you'd know because the evening news would report that Russian news anchors were wearing black ties, which meant that they were dead. Then a new guy would be announced as the premier a couple days later.

It would be nice if the media would stop telling us who will be the chosen one and allow the people to choose instead. I know that applies less in Russia where the leader will be chosen for them anyway, but it still applies somewhat.

There's a phrase or term for where you affect the outcome just by forecasting it and now I can't think of it, fark.

"Of course, I write on Fark: Pesky Peskov's pickled pecker pumps Putin's pert posterior pleasantly plump, in many posts, because to publicly weaponize nursery rhymes against America's adversaries is how I pursue happiness and exercise freedom as Ben Franklin would want me to do"
