Stuffing poor people into high rises is a big mistake.

Affordable housing is necessary but building high rises is not the answer.

The Chinese build those "straw towers" everywhere. Cheap and fast. Thanks to the Chinese property rules though, not to last. Someone needed the space, likely one of the factories near the old towers.

China is run by engineers.  This is just a larger version of the 10,000 domino chain reaction show.

That is China, and they do that because a significant fraction of their economy is keeping people employed by creating these ghost cities, as well as creating paper value to show off their "booming" economy.

China's "official" GDP is very likely grossly inflated much like the USSR used to do. Which is why they are so sensitive to any criticism and analysis, their house of cards is extremely shaky.

I think the rule is that if the developer can't find enough tenants within some number of years after acquiring the land, they have to vacate the property and let it back on the market. So for all we know it might just turn into a completely different piece of empty residential real estate.

Is the frame rate weird? It feels like I'm looking at toys or old special effects miniatures rather than large buildings being demolished, and I can't quite put my finger on why.

Stuffing poor people into high rises is a big mistake.

Affordable housing is necessary but building high rises is not the answer.

The high-rise buildings are not the problem, it's the lack of infrastructure around them (or built into them) that's the problem. You can't build these buildings without the thought of where people will do all their daily activities. Without the integration of services is a terrible thing even if those services are a block away. Could you imagine having to walk over a block to Starbucks or get your dry cleaning? Think Pruitt-Igoe (other reasons there also)or pretty much any NYCHA projects.

High rises are absolutely the problem.

Public housing can succeed, but it does better in mixed development.  If it's not mixed, low rise units do better. Think two story buildings with 4-6 units.

Shoving poor people into a poor people tower is dumb and doomed to fail.  It's also expensive and will not be maintained properly.  It's also dangerous for maintenance workers and first responders.  We have years of evidence  to support this.  It's inhuman and a total NIMBY move to get poor people out of sight.

Mixed income developments with affordable units are the solution, but people fight that because they don't want the poors in their neighborhood.

Ignoring years of public housing policy is dumb.  You are putting forth a false choice.  There are alternatives to poverty towers that we know don't work and are cruel.

Right?
And while China's construction boom has had the good, the bad, the ugly and the stupid, they have lowered their poverty rates significantly. The US simply says 'well, we could halve child poverty for one year but we have to jump through hoops of fire first. And then maybe'. It's just easier for our economic and political system to use the media to blame poor people.

What is it called when we stuff rich people into high rises?

That would be a fun job. Did an Israeli firm do the the demo or something?

China also has a problem with people paying for units in buildings that never get finished or can't be occupied in some way. Then they have no recourse.

It was amazing all the miles and miles of new high rises we saw from Beijing to Shanghai and that is a several hour bullet train ride and it looked like they were almost all new. Can't be sustainable.

There was also loads of real estate offices with pictures of all the new high rises for sale and the prices were not even cheap. Can't remember anymore. This was 4 years ago.

The problem is that it's a HUGE bubble.  Average Chinese "invest" in 2nd and 3rd apartments, hoping for the cash flow.  The government owns the land underneath, so the structures are NOT built to survive more than 30-40 years, and even then, the Party can come in at any time and do what they want.

At some point, that bubble is going to burst, then millions of average Chinese middle-class folks will be out trillions of dollars, their plans for retirement destroyed.  It will turn into a bloodbath magnitudes worse than Tiananman Square.
