The thing with Yertle's clan is that they don't care about people, they care about votes.  And right now they are drumming up what the anti-vaxxers want to hear to get those votes.  In the end this might be a win-win. The herd get's culled out and the ones with any sense are left.

I expect to see a lot of "I SURVIVED THE DEMOCRAT HOAX" t-shirts at the polls in Nov 2022. Hopefully the Echo-Zulu variants get more focused on attacking the immune systems of the stupid and criminally insane.

McConnell has kept a relatively low profile on Biden's vaccine mandate, in contrast to Republican governors such as Nebraska's Pete Ricketts, who are crusading against it as a defining constitutional issue.

Well of course the guy named after a non-communicable disease isn't going to see the point of vaccination.

One technical lead for the WHO has suggested that once they run out of greek letters, they might move onto constellations. The IAU recognizes 88 constellations, so should hopefully last for at least a little while. Once they run out of those, there are a lot of other alphabets that they can go through, but choosing which alphabets to go through is kind of fraught.

For instance, if they were to choose the Hebrew alphabet, on the one hand that would help stir up all kinds of anti-semitism, but on the other hand, if I have to die of a mutant strain of COVID, I would like it to have a really badass name like "COVID-Samekh."

/ The constellation thing also seems like it could be a bad idea
// Like, if you died of "COVID-Cygnus", everyone would be like, "Woah, hardcore"
/// But if you died of "COVID Puppis," that would just be embarrassing

This isn't some "Gotcha" for McConnel, his seat is so secure that it won't be until he dies that it's finally given to someone else. He also doesn't care who lives and who dies, he got his shot, he's secure in the knowledge that he, himself, is safe and that's all that matters. He doesn't have to say or do anything, the misinformation arms and low-IQ voters that propagate those lies are all running under their own power, he doesn't have to say or do a damn thing, just let the system they built over decades do it's thing while he keeps stonewalling and rolls the dice every election cycle till he's back in power.

"Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace pressed Ricketts over the weekend on why the COVID-19 vaccine is so objectionable when kids in his state are required to be vaccinated against diphtheria, tetanus, polio, measles, mumps and rubella.

Democrats have echoed similar criticisms.

Everyone with a brain should be echoing similar criticisms but still the babbling continues and we can't get out of this farking pandemic.

I don't really see how this is any sort of crisis for them. Yertle is quite accomplished at talking out of both sides of his mouth, of never really getting backed into a corner. More Teflon than Trump. He'll manage this dilemma just fine.

How about they agree the vaccine isn't political and get behind Biden on this

2021-09-14 3:17:19 PM
FTA: McConnell has been less outspoken than other GOP leaders, such as Ricketts, who last week accused Biden of issuing a Soviet-style diktat with his vaccine mandate.

Last I checked, the Soviets wouldn't let you opt out of an all-expenses paid trip to Siberia if you had a nose swab once a week, which is also an option if you don't vaccinate.

This is how the republic dies. Biden mandates vaccines, covid recedes, the economy improves. The minority loses their grip on power.

"...recent Washington Post-ABC News poll showed that only 18 percent of unvaccinated people would get a vaccine if their employer required it."

165 million × 30% =  appx 50 million

~50 million × 18% = 9 million

So 41 million are willing to risk their jobs -- rather than get a vaccine

I thought at least one Republican state legislator in this country had proposed a bill removing the requirements for any vaccination already.

oldfool: The unvaccinated have made the current versions of the vaccine less effective for the vaccinated.

Fortunately that is not even true.  The breakthrough and fatal cases are still close to or in line with the observed cases when the trials were underway.  What the Virus has done is gotten to a point where the load even in a vaccinated individual becomes enough to be as contagious as the original strain, and in the unvaccinated, almost 2X more able to MAGA.  And that is why it is causing the case numbers to skyrocket.  Cause it has found a way to kill the dumbs over top of the hard work of the smart.

The unfortunate actually sad thing is it is not virulent enough that children/Tweens are part of the unvaxed and the teens and YA crowd are also ending up in the hospital and dying (lower numbers, but lower is still worse than non existent,  and when children's hospitals are full, there is a problem.)

I dunno. The Republican talking points would seem pretty easy to come up with.

"Personally I think everyone should search their conscience and do what they think is best for themselves. That's what freedom is all about - freedom from the government telling you what to do. It's true that we're all safer when more people get the vaccine, so I encourage anyone who's comfortable with it to do so, but the bigger problem is fascist Demonrats trying to control every aspect of your life."

It's CDC scientists doing the naming, not the military.  They're going Greek, not Phonetic, so after Delta is Gamma (which is already taken but unspectacular, IIRC), not Echo.

Anyone know what they're up to?  We've been past Lambda for months...

Is it going to cost him enough votes to put his seat in jeopardy, or is it just going to "look bad for him?"  Because "looking bad" while his voters keep lining up to pull the lever marked "R" just as faithfully as they always have, is not a tough spot for him.

But it's not about turtle, it's about the party.  The majority of people are for mandates and safety precautions.  Him being the standalone voice of reason (jfc, can't believe I typed that) in his party isn't going to help his party.

If they're vocally in a very belligerent manner, against all these precautions, it falls on him as a "leader" of the party.  So if they lose seats or fail to pick some up, it's on him.

So his seat may be safe for eternity as long as the vampire is alive, it's going to fall on him, and he may lose the leadership position.  It will also be on him to somehow message the party out of it.

"It's easy to separate the urging to get a vaccine from a mandate to get a vaccine. That seems to be where most Republicans are drawing the line, and he's unlikely to get out in front of his caucus on this one," he said.

OH fark OFF.

The messaging from the republican party and their pundits for months has now been that the "urging" is on par with "forcing" them to get a shot.

It's just farking weasel words.  Reality does not farking matter to these people.  First it was they were waiting for FDA approval and then it got approved... and nothing of great substance happened and they're worried about the long term safety now.  (I'd like to point out to all those people who said that approval was all people would need and we should be more sensitive.  You were wrong).

At the same time they were saying that the urging of vaccines that was happening was on par with forced abortions and nazi germany.... and then a mandate comes along and they're back to "well this is a step too far.  Urging is one thing.... mandates are a bridge too far."

These farking people just need to hop on busses and drive off cliffs already.

2021-09-14 6:48:41 PM
FTFA: "This is a big winning issue for Republicans because I don't think many people think that this is constitutional. There aren't many people who make the case that OSHA [Occupational Safety and Health Administration] has the power to do this unilaterally," said Brian Darling, a former Senate aide and GOP strategist.

Yes, Darling, I'm sure that everyone you talk to is super against mandating vaccinations for workers, including all of the "independents" who claim not to be affiliated with any party and then vote straight GOP.  So definitely ride that horse all the way to the finish line!  75% of the country has been vaccinated and most of them support mandatory vaccinations, but by all means make that the defining issue of the 2022 campaign.
