What would be the fallout range from a nuclear explosion in Idaho?

CSB:

My MIL lives in Boundary County, about 20 miles this side of the Canadian border.  She has 25 acres on the side of a glacial basin that holds some of the most fertile farmland in the country.  It's absolutely gorgeous out there, especially at night, but I rarely go visit.

I just can't stand the willful, boastful ignorance of the people there, and the hatred with which they view anyone from the outside.  These are, generally, wonderful people who would give me the shirts off their backs, but I'm an older white male with a relative in the community, so I'm kind of given a Guest Pass.  They truly believe the Mountain Man myth and try to live what they believe the myth to be.  Of course, Real mountain men were all different colors and nationalities, and politics rarely had anything to do with them, but they don't let facts get in the way.  These guys will tolerate the local tribe, and the minorities stay in their designated zones, so they'll fly their Trump flags and talk about MAGA while holding all kinds of superspreader events.  A Real Mountain Man wouldn't get a virus, so why should they?  This ignores the fact that a Real Mountain Man probably wouldn't have been in a position to know about any sort of vaccine, let alone obtain one, more than maybe once or twice a year, but that's par for the course.  They're Real Mountain Men and will die like all the rest.  We're just hoping MIL stays safe.

Idaho Republican Gov. Brad Little's office told the Times he wasn't available for an interview. In recent weeks, Mr. Little said he wanted residents "to choose to do the right thing and get vaccinated." He issued a Sept. 10 statement saying he was exploring legal action to halt President Joe Biden's mandate that will require federal employees to get vaccinated.
"President Biden is out of touch, and his mandates only add to the divisiveness within our country," Mr. Little said.

By "criticize" you mean they're stocking up on weapons, ammunition and toilet paper, and sit violently stroking the forestocks of their AR's while peering through the curtains at those hippie liberals that took over Liberty Lake and are probably eyeballing their teevees and daughters.

I Met a real nice girl in Burley once. She was easy to make laugh, and after an hour or so of shooting the shiat with her she mentioned that she had to drive an hour to get to work there in Burley, and her family had farms in Utah and Idaho. She had "cousins all over the place".

California needs fixing?  Yes.

Even Republicans aren't so stupid as to pay $5000/month/tent site to "house" the homeless.  Los Angeles has been sitting on $1 billion in bonds to create housing for the homeless, and they have their fingers up their noses so far that they can't figure out how to do it for under $300,000 a unit.

Meanwhile Skid Row continues to boom.

Just spent a long weekend in Coeur D'Alene for a conference - first time to Idaho. Hubby and I are liberals from Texas, so we were well prepared for the red hats and noticeable lack of masks and social distancing......but, that area is absolutely gorgeous and the weather was perfect. We did lots of hiking so we avoided the plague rats as much as possible. People were very friendly and barely gave us the side eye as we walked around in our masks.  I would love to visit again. Hopefully climate change doesn't manage to burn it to the ground.

Sorry, no.  You're doing the same thing everyone else does, and it just divides us.

If someone stops on the highway to help an older person change a tire, do you verify that their worldview meshes with yours before you accept their help?  If you're joining a crew looking for a lost child, do you only take those known to you as Liberals?  You're locked into your own definitions and viewpoint just as strongly as these people are.  Are you a good person?

These are people who care for their families and their community.  They give time and money to their neighbors and they support their community.  They were born and raised in this culture and it's all they know.  The fact that you find it morally repugnant may, in your opinion, give you the moral high ground, but the reality is that you are absolutely no different than they, The fact that you cannot see this says a lot about your own definitions of tolerance and acceptance.

The people that are assholes are ones, like you, who do not even attempt to look at the other point of view, much less do anything about it.  I don't spend time there because trying to help a community break through its ignorance is hard work and I just don't have the time or desire to do it.  When I do visit we talk about crops, animals, hunting, and the weather, all without issue.  The two topics I will not discuss with them, religion and MAGA, are not the only two that define someone.  Your making it so tells me a lot about your general maturity level.

Washington hospitals should ask:
1) was the patient vaccinated?
2) was the patient under 12
3) did the patient have a known anaphylactic reaction to at least one ingredient in all three available vaccines?

If the answer to all three are "no" then f-em.  'No, we ain't taking your plague rats."

Sorry, yes.  We are divided because you will tolerate asshole behavior from assholes.  I will never seek common ground with evil people.  Apparently you will.

And there it is -- that's all you had to say.

Your definition of evil is sacrosanct an immutable, and you do not believe that people have the capacity to change.  Congratulations, you're an asshole.

Nevertheless, I will address your "issues":

If someone stops on the highway to help an older person change a tire, do you verify that their worldview meshes with yours before you accept their help?  If you're joining a crew looking for a lost child, do you only take those known to you as Liberals?  You're locked into your own definitions and viewpoint just as strongly as these people are.  Are you a good person?

I did not say I knew the views of some random stranger who stopped.  Are you saying that someone who stops to help a stranger must be interrogated before you'll decide if they're assholes and you'll let them help?   Because that's what you just said...

These are people who care for their families and their community.  They give time and money to their neighbors and they support their community.  They were born and raised in this culture and it's all they know.

So were the Nazis.   Are they wonderful, too?

Wow, went straight for the whole Nazi thing, eh?  We did not take all of Germany out and shoot them after the war.  We helped them become what they are today by listening, guiding, and helping.  Same with the Japanese, Vietnamese, and just about every other community we have conflicted with.  Here, however, you apparently advocate ---- what?  Isolation and complete destruction?  Sure seems like big-time asshole behavior to me.

The fact that you find it morally repugnant may, in your opinion, give you the moral high ground, but the reality is that you are absolutely no different than they, The fact that you cannot see this says a lot about your own definitions of tolerance and acceptance.

Horseshiat.  That quip about having 10 people at the table with a Nazi?  Guess where you are.

I don't have to tell you about this point of view, because you are an alpha example.  People like you -- on both sides -- only see the parts you hate, and you make that into an entire person.  Yes, people can be wonderful and kind at the same time they're being willfully ignorant and intolerant.  People can love and hate at the same time, even unto same person.  Your unwillingness to see (or, perhaps, understand) makes you willfully ignorant, and you obviously have strong hatred for those you see as outsiders.  What's the difference?

I have no obligation to provide you with a dissertation, but i suggest you start whatever research you're actually willing to undertake by checking out the writings of Jesus, Buddha, Mohamed, Dr. King, Ghandi.  There are lots and lots of others.

Dear lord I hope not!

Most of the wildfires were/are on Fed land, which the Trump BLM/DoI refused to allow brush removal. And vcut or eliminated any maintenance funding. And there's the multi-year drought, which is going to get worse, due to climate change, which the Trumpers deny exists.

Homelessness is a problem, and if we didn't have to spend $billions from the CA budget surplus (created by the Dems over the past few years) on keeping more people from becoming homeless because the GOP trashed the national economy more than it would have (by downplaying the pandemic) we'd have more money to solve it.

Let's also NOT forget that the GOP has repeatedly tried to cut VA funding (way to support the troops!), health care spending (especially for mental health), and that Reagan started all this by kicking people out of mental health facilities.

CA is already the 6th largest economy in the world, and if we stopped sending $billions to the red states becaue they can't get their shiate together, we'd have even more. If the West Coast was a single country, it would be the world's 4th largest economy.

So take your "CA sucks" and stuff it in your Invermectin-clogged arteries.

The GOP is best at eliminating the Fire Dept, hiring arsonists to set things on fire, and then blaming everyone in the neighborhood because things are on fire.

That's pretty binary.  Isn't it possible that people are more complex than you think, maybe with multiple facets to their personalities?  Isn't it also possible that there are some facets you will find acceptable and some you will not?  What if you don't know or aren't sure?  Is it necessary to ask an individual's political position on everything, or anything, to have a pleasant conversation with them?  If your answer is No, then you need to go back to Kindergarten and learn more about socializing.  It's highly probable that you've conducted business or even had pleasant conversations with people you'd think are politically repulsive, without even knowing.

I'd be willing to bet you've been boastfully ignorant multiple times in your life.  I rather suspect it's kind of a permanent condition, actually.  Does that mean you're not a wonderful person?

Grow up and start acting like adults.
