The cross section of humanity that is on the ballot is amusing...to include an adult entertainer, Caitlyn Jenner, and a college student.

This is the first test of their bullshiat cheating stuff. TFG, and every QOP, has already come out and said if Newsom survives it is due to cheating. If he wins there will be a lot of noise about lawsuits and recounts and audits.

If he loses we will hear... <crickets from them>

The party line votes in person are close (one in SoCal favors the Rs by quite a bit) but the mail-in is 100:1 or something D returns. Something like that. It is a very large number and there is really no way for the Rs to catch up in pure numbers and I doubt many, if any, of the D votes are for his recall.

Maddow had a bit on it tonight.

Arnold was one of the worst governors the state has had and his wife was a terrible and mean First Lady.  Because of his almost Trump like ignorance of how things work in government,he left the state in massive debt.  Arrogance isn't a substitute for experience and knowledge. fark off hgh man.

The whole recall mechanism is farking stupid. It should be outlawed.

You vote separately for two different things.

You vote Yes/No on recall.

Then you vote on who you want to win, if a recall happens.

So you see, you can't "split" the democratic vote. You could vote NO and then vote for an insurance candidate, as a backup in case the crazies do win.

But CA voters are so dumbfark stupid the Democrats are too scared to enact this plan, lest the idiots mess up and vote YES and for a democrat.

It should be TWO elections. An up/down vote on recall. Then if a recall an election on who to replace with.

But fark us I guess. Note how the Republicans didn't even endorse anyone because they're cowards who know they're just here to cause political chaos.

(and i'm not leaving the second portion of my ballot blank, I need to figure out which of these crazies is least offensive!!!!)

This recall nonsense is going to happen again and again. The GQP knows that they can't win in a straight up election but by gaming the system they stand a decent chance.

It's outright ridiculous that you can force a recall election with only 1.5 million signatures in a state with 22 million registered voters. The bar should be much higher.

Heck. Even the old towns of the west out here had multiple seat outhouses in towns. Bodie still has them. The only movie I can remember that had them was the reboot of True Grit. But then it took forever for movies and TV to even acknowledge toilets existed. All In The Family was the first, I think.

But yeah, we need more of them even for people like me. I have had to do the shiat search more than once.

I was thinking (a very dangerous place for me) the other night about your second thought.

Generally, in a household with a couple and a few kids things go south sometimes but in the end they generally work together to fix it. Compromises may be made but it gets fixed.

The GQP thinks *everything* is a problem but, like that comic we have all seen, is they refuse to try to fix anything. There is no compromise ever and it frustrates the fark out of me, and millions of others, that there are sooooooo many things the govt can fix and do for us and help us but they flat out just fold their arms and pout. Never is any compromise for a solution offered.

With our resources working together could make us farking awesome. Just the infrastructure bill alone could zoom the economy, put a lot of people to work, fill hotels, boost manufacturing, boost food service, just do amazing stuff for millions of people.

You want people back to work? Get the bill done! Stop farking whining about this shiat and help for one time in our history.

But it sits on the desk because of a few assholes that think the money is no coming back (think of the tax revenue coming back. billions) and the need to make one man, Biden look bad.

They fark over millions of people to make one man look bad.

GRRRRR!!! This is old news but sometimes you see shiat and it all comes around and slaps you in the face again.

Fellow California Farkers, vote NO please.

Take your five minutes, mark that ballot and mail it, or drop it off at the voting box (usually libraries).

It's not in the bag. History tends to repeat itself and California's record at the ballot box has proved assumptions wrong before.

This state has voted against gay marriage and voted for Prop 187, which was anti-Hispanic shiat Trumpers would dream of passing, let alone in liberal, LGBTQ bastion California is alleged to be.

And then, hey, Arnold should know ... from Wikipedia on the last recalled CA gov, Gray Davis:

Davis called the recall a right-wing effort to rewrite history after having lost the election during the previous year.[83] In a 19-minute campaign address that was broadcast statewide, Davis called the recall effort a "right-wing power grab" by Republicans. He blamed Republicans in the legislature and in Washington for many of the state's problems, while accepting some responsibility for those problems.[84]
"It's like the Oakland Raiders saying to Tampa Bay, 'We know you beat us, but we want to play the Super Bowl again,"' said Davis about the recall.[83]
On October 7, 2003, Davis was recalled. The recall was supported by 55.4% of voters. Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected to replace Davis as governor. The Bay Area and Los Angeles County were the only regions in California to vote "no" on the recall. Davis is the second governor in the history of the United States to have been recalled; the first was Lynn Frazier of North Dakota in 1921.[85]

/if '90s defense secretary Dick Cheney had used influence to keep the military industrial complex presence strong in Los Angeles rather than have it move to Virginia and the southern states, California would be a battleground or red state, IMO. A lot of red voters turned blue as the defense industries downsized and/or left.

BafflerMeal: How were the fires "not taken seriously?"

Oh my god. I so lost my temper at some of these fools while I was following the Facebook feeds keeping track of the Caldor fire.

"Why didn't they put the fire out when it was still small?" (Yes, really)
"Newsom should have listened to Trump and been raking the forest last year!"
"Why aren't there air tankers dropping water on the fire around the clock?"
"Why is the fire burning where there is granite, that seems suspicious to me?" (That was when I lost it)
"Newsom just shut down all the National Forests, he just did that to keep the tourists out!" (I had to stop posting before I got a timeout with that one)

The complete ignorance and the lack of knowledge about, well, anything, is just mind-blowing. It's a very small percentage, true, and really the number of people being nothing but kind to one another and offering help and places to stay, bedrooms and parking for RVs and barns for livestock, long-term housing and job offers; but the ones who were blaming the Governor for the fire needed to be taken out behind the state and shot.

California recalls don't work that way, though. They consist of two questions: "Should the governor be recalled?" and, "If the current governor is recalled, who should replace them?" If a majority want the governor recalled, then they're out, replaced by the candidate from the second question who gets a plurality of votes. Votes for Bustamante should have had no effect on whether or not Gray Davis lost his recall.

So, you have the Lt. Gov. (or someone else who is very clearly in the current governor's camp) run to replace the governor, and tell people to vote against the recall but vote for the insurance candidate just in case.

Ideally, California should just run a new election for governor if there are enough signatures on the recall petitions. That would at least prevent nutjobs like Larry Elder from even having a chance at winning.

If enough people preferred Bustamante to Davis and so voted yes on the recall, then he would have split the vote. I don't know if this was the case, though, just that it is a possibility to split the vote in a recall.

GOP playbook:

Have Newsom recalled.  Get a GOP lackey in his place.

Hope for Dianne Feinstein to kick the bucket before her re-election.  Once she does, put a GOP shill in said seat.  Senate majority goes to the GOP again.

Gerrymandering and voter suppression continue (heck, picks speed) ensuring only those who matters votes count.  GOP retain all three branches.
