John Mulaney Tells Seth About His Eventful Year

That was a very interesting interview; especially their candid discussion of the intervention process.

It seems a bit like a classic celebrity mea culpa interview... but Seth didn't let him off lightly. That was good. And as much as I love Mulaney, he must've been a colossally insufferable dickhead when he was using.

Respect to his recovery, but it's a lot of pressure on a baby to be dad's sobriety savior.

He does radiate that 'asshole vibe' but his stuff is pretty funny.

Nothing keeps an addict on track like an unexpected baby.

Not to be all "stop liking what I don't like" and seriously, if you enjoy Mulaney, please continue to do so, but when and why did this guy get so big with so little material?

I think the salt and pepper diner bit is hilarious. I love the too much tuna stuff with Kroll. But the guy just did something like 2 weeks straight of sold out shows near me, as one does, yet every fark headline references that one joke and only that one joke.

He admitted that even at his intervention he had to be "the smartest person in the room." That was very telling.

I can't tell the difference between him and Pete Holmes.

Because we coddle piece of shiat addicts.

"Olivia and the baby TOTALLY changed me!" screams the guy who within a year will be back in rehab at best, possibly in jail for domestic abuse at worse.

I read that as John Holmes and I thought you meant Pete Davidson.

Fark has a tendency to run a single joke waaaay into the ground (France surrenders!  Fb- is the father!!) but that's on Fark, not on Mulaney.  And the guy is pretty damn funny for sure.  Watch a few of his comedy specials on Netflix and you'll see.

Pete Holmes is more obsequious to his guests and his audience.

FWIW that advice DOES NOT include a kid. That's even worse.

Fixing yourself is GREAT. Sometimes that means even separating from ones you love, for whatever reason.

THIS shiat has red flags and foghorns all over it.

I am sure his marriage to Olivia Munn will last for more than 30 years and won't end acrimoniously at all.

Yep, Fark never met a headline gag it didn't treat like an SNL skit: 15 seconds of chuckles stretched out to six minutes.

See also, the Morgan Fairchild gag that is now a daily drop in the politics sub.

Everything about this from Mulaney's personal life to this thread is messy as fark.

I'll pay attention to him again when he's finally worked out all of his shiat. I don't think he's there yet.

It's surprising how many of his fans feel betrayed by his divorce and his instant baby-daddy status with Olivia Munn. His standup often mentions his alcoholism and his drug addiction. His fans thought he was touring with Pete Davidson to keep him clean or something?

I honestly don't know why anyone but his family and friends care. I watch standup to laugh at exaggerated life observations by funny people. That's the beginning and end of my relationship with them.

Unless it comes out that they're a rapist or raging bigot or something else truly reprehensible, stuff like this is just so much noise. Their relationship ups and downs are of no concern to me.

I do care about his relapse, selfishly, since that could impact the entertainment he provides, and with empathy, because addiction is a difficult problem to face and one still burdened by shame.

But whether or not his marriage is stable?

Whatever.

What do you think are the chances that the baby is actually Pete Davidson's, but she's lying in order to pick the better option?

Everyone's thinking it but no one is saying it - Pete Davidson has a giant penis.

I really don't understand women.

This guy has serious problems, bailed on his wife, and Munn decides he's the one she wants to stick his junk inside her to make a babby?  It's like when Mila Kunis married Ashton Kutcher.  She KNEW he had cheated on Demi, so why does she assume he'll be absolutely faithful to her?  To be fair, Kutcher has like $150M, and I'm sure the pre-nup gives her a big chunk of that, but still...

Self-delusion?  Dunning-Kruger?

We do not know how true anything is in the tabloids. Kunis and Kutcher are still married with kids. So they seem happy. We do not know fully what is going on behind closed doors. It feels kind of icky to make judgments on any celebrity lives, because we do not know them. We only know on what they want us to know through interviews, and information from people talking behind their backs to tabloids.

This post is dizzying to me. John Mulaney has fans? To me he's just not that funny, so it's incomprehensible that he'd have fans. He's a less interesting Jack Whitehall, and he doesn't have the accent or the charm.

2021-09-08 8:47:15 PM
Having a kid when you're still struggling with something like getting off of hard drugs seems... inadvisable.

Like, he doesn't seem like an actual piece of shiat so the kid will probably be as well-balanced and safe as any celebrity's child ever is, but the stress of those first few years is gonna blow his recovery up like it was a nation on the Russian border that just discovered a new oil field.  That would not be a choice I'd have made in his place.

I'm glad it's going well for him so far in at least the short term, though.

2021-09-08 8:47:55 PM
What I found particularly troubling about that interview is when he said Olivia and the baby were going to save him from himself.

No.

You don't put the onus of your sobriety on someone or something else. It's up to YOU to keep you sober, not a rebound fling, not a baby, not a job, not your neighbor. All that does is allow you to skirt responsibility if you fall off the wagon. "It's not my fault I started drinking again, _____ left me." "It's not my fault I went back to meth, I lost my job."

I don't know any of these people, and I don't pretend to, but I know people who've suffered from addictions, and this is a pattern I've seen before. It doesn't end well. I'm hoping it ends well for him, particularly for the child's sake, but the odds aren't in his favor. There's a reason you're not supposed to make any huge, life-altering decisions right out of rehab. He's got a lot of problems, well-documented problems, that she is ill-equipped to deal with, and now she's got to deal with them AND a baby.

2021-09-08 9:01:38 PM
Here's my prediction for... "Mr. Smartest asshole in the room"
Within two years:
*Olivia will be done carrying the responsibility for his recovery, she'll get all the child and spousal support (AS ONE DOES!)
*He'll relapse, hard, and either have a brush with some fentanyl laced shiat or have an epic public breakdown.

I thought the farkers loved John, what happened?

2021-09-08 9:28:33 PM
telling Meyers, "You guys saved me from drugs, and maybe Olivia has saved me from myself."

Good luck with that.  Really, good luck.

Reality is his friends gave him and opening to save himself from drugs.  Maybe Olivia has given him an opportunity to save himself from himself.  Friends and partners can provide powerful support, but you can always fark yourself over in spite of them.

I'll be 6 years sober this November 11.  Three years ago I thought I was in great shape.  Now I see I was still pretty shakey then, but I'm really in great shape now!  Maybe.

It's a lifelong staring contest with ones self.  Never know who's going to blink and when.
