Sweet story, but man I can't believe the child abuse that goes into your kid becoming an Orioles fan.

Not nearly as much as the O's need help on the field.

I'm actually kind of surprised there hasn't been a woman in pro baseball.  First, there's the minor leagues to test things out in (Jackie Robinson went to Montreal first, not directly to Brooklyn).  Second, it's (mostly) a non-contact sport.  Third, there are styles of play that don't require sheer strength, both in pitching and batting.

I don't care who you are, how old you are, where you're from, whether your sex organs dangle etc etc. If you can throw a good knuckleball you can be a major league pitcher.

I don't think women would be good at spitting, or tabacky chewin' and expectoratin,' or blowing snot out one nostril. They'd also fail at the 'readjusting your cup' maneuver.

Chewing tobacco has been banned in the pros for decades now.

Neat, rare Orioles trifecta in play.

I believe there are some women who have played for independent minor leagues.

But there are very few situations where strength and speed aren't important. You might be able to get away as a knuckleballer, but even Tim Wakefield threw plenty of fastballs alongside his knuckleball and for various reasons (both good and bad) knuckleballers are few and far between.

There also isn't a development pipeline. Talented girls and women are pushed into softball as there are few girls baseball teams. The NCAA, Olympics, etc pair men's baseball with women's softball.

Hockey, basketball, etc have that talent pipeline in place so the best girls and women are developing talent that can compete with the men.
